Yeah, all based around conference football, being released by basically every team and not scoring a lot.

Brazil... Again... haven't we flogged that horse?

There is little record of him in Brazil, he's been in the UK for the best part of 8 years so he's hardly Brazilian anyway...

...and there are still Brazilians out there worthy of a spot but people need to be wary of the hype.  For every Henrique, Daniel and Fred there are a dozen Georges, Claudinhos and Reinaldos.

Based on our short history my suggested recruitment Rules of Thumb;

1. If you want a player who will consistently stand out in the A-League and significantly influence the outcome of games then you are looking for a player at the Championship / Premiership (some) level (e.g Ifill).

2. If you want a very solid reliable player who will consistently command a starting spot then you are looking for a player at League 1, fringe or better Aussie international or regular starting All White level (e.g. Greeny, McKain and Leo).

3. Recruit for ability and character - unfortunately they don't always come together (e.g. G**). I think we do this bloody well - with the odd unfortunate exception our players are class on and off the pitch.

4. Beware the seduction of Latin players - they come with a lot of skill but physically (and often mentally) struggle - they fall over a lot.

5. Beware players who have had a lot of clubs and have been cast off by their last club(s) - there is usually a reason why (see 3.)

6. Take recruitment risks with younger players and not with import spots - they are too valuable to risk.

He dribbles a lot and the opposition dont like it - you can see it all over their faces. (Ron Atkinson)

Doesn't look that bad... though not much point in having a bad youtube clip.

I think people should take each player on their own merit - who knows he may be a useful player. Instead of being snobby towards his nationality or the league he played in.

Maybe I'm just too optomistic about these things.

Of course I have (Hibs) green tinted specs on, but come on, Killen stayed at Celtic for 2 full seasons and did almost the square root of zero. It was obvious to everyone but him that it was never going to work out there but he stayed anyway, and then eventually 2 years later he went out on loan.

I'd hardly say I am basing my opinion on a sh*tload of nothing when I've probably seen Killen play more games in the flesh than any person on here? He also disrespected Hibs in the media by saying they were simply a "stepping stone" for him. It may be true, but he didn't have to actually say it in public about the team who plucked him from relative obscurity at Oldham (where he was going nowhere) and gave him a shot in a top league, and as stated, stuck by him through his injuries.

By the way, he's not the world's only footballer to do this...another Hibs player who went at the same time is now back at Hibs after having the exact same experience at Celtic. These guys never learn.

And then there's the old favourite I want to be banned I want to be banned who sat on his considerable arse for a year picking up his 40k per week after being told he definitely would never play again and could go!

I seem to recall Killen wanted to stay at Hibs but they only offered him a one year deal. so he did the thing any human would do and went for more money and a longer contract length. As far as players go picking up cheques happily, see Winston Bogarde, now thats a good story

You are correct - Hibs offered him a one year deal based on the fact he was injured for approximatey 50% of his time at the club, and had a bad record for injuries. In the end, Celtic did their usual buying/signing the best players from other teams in the league just because they can with no real intention of playing them, and off he went.

My gripe with Killen is that there were no thanks given to Hibs after picking him up from a team like Oldham and putting him right back in the spotlight where he had the opportunity to be noticed by the likes of Celtic. Instead, it was the disrespectful stuff that I mentioned in my previous post.

I'm fairly sure Smeltz was pretty respectful, and thankful, of what Phoenix had done for him when he left. I think if Smeltz had said Phoenix were simply a stepping stone to bigger things, most of you guys wouldn't have exactly appreciated the comment.

4 and a half minutes of him being decidedly average....

Looks not too bad to be fair, although hard to judge against dodgy defenders!

Looks like he's got a bit of pace, which we need, and a decent work rate.

Can't imagine similar footage of Shane Smeltz when playing at that level would've been much better...

Wondering if anyone can say a bit more about ths guy. Seen him trialling.??  How old is he ??

From the Dom Post this morning
"Emiliano Tade

He started the season with Lower Hutt City but switched to the Newtown Park-based club because he lives in the city.

The Wellington Phoenix have allowed him to train with them a couple of times, and Little thinks if Tade can learn to play a bit smarter his future is bright.

"He's the best finisher I've seen he scores goals for fun," Little said."

Sorry, I never read the article, just reports from the game.

Topleft or 2ndBest might be the best for an answer.

Utd players are allowed to trial with the Nix whenever they want in exchange for Ken doing all the donkey work for the club

Doesn't mention anything about a trial, so probably just there to fill the number.  Tonnes of local players have done that in the past.  Heck they have resorted to Granville and myself at times.

lol@ feverish

G pretty much said it all. He's incredibly talented and still pretty young but I'm not sure whether he was 'trailing' or making up numbers. I know Luciano Trani watched him play a couple of games before he was asked to join them though. If he put in the hard work I think he'd go quite far, without a doubt.

I think he goal tally is 11 from 9 games this season.TopLeft072010-07-05 22:27:54

Watched the Viera video and wow, the defending when he scores as a result of a freekick at about 3mins 50secs really shows what level he's playing at.  One defender in front of the freekick taker and the rest slowly meandering back.

Anyone even know which position Alex Dale is? looked pretty young. "discovered in a carpark" like a coach just happened to walk past when he was playing football outside IKEA, or was he actually an orphan found in a carpark?

Magno Vieira is a cool name. I would sign him on that merit.

We will never fully decide who has won the football.

Viera has pace and a decent amount of trickery, but his record doesnt inspire confidence (some of the keeping and defending on that video leads me to conference english defenders are lazy crap)

I'll keep an open mind, I remember when Ricki picked Smeltz I saw one video of him and thought "what the hell?"

Whats that over used cliche on here? "In Ricki we trust..."

Yeah, thought that was the case. Was listed on the PFA website as a free agent when I posted that.
