May have misheard it but sounded on TV3 last night that Viera has a kiwi girl friend and they decided to move here. So possibility is that he just turned up here and asked to trial rather than being recruited as such.

Saw him out at Harcourt on the weekend. Some very nice touches and three very well taken goals. Game was pretty stretched by the time he came on but showed enough to suggest he could play at a higher level.

Jets sign two imports to complete roster AAP - July 6, 2010, 2:24 pm

The Newcastle Jets have signed Chinese international striker Zhang Shuo and journeyman Italian midfielder Marcello Fiorentini for the A-League season starting next month.

Shuo, 26, has collected 10 caps for China since his international debut in 2004 and arrives at the Jets after a brief stint with Indonesian outfit Persik Kediri.

The Beijing-born frontman has appeared in over 130 matches in the Chinese Super League and played for Tianjin Teda in the AFC Champions League 2009 competition.

Central midfielder Fiorentini, 29, started out in the youth system of Serie A club Lazio in the late 1990s and has spent recent years with Pescara and Palazzolo in the Serie C and D respectively.

Both players were trialled among a group of foreign players brought to the Hunter a few weeks ago.

Jets CEO John Tsatsimas said their signings completed the Jets roster.

Zhang Shuo sounds like he could be a very good signing.  Know nothing about the other, though, so hope he flops - for our sake.

People were getting worried about a trialist from Conference level for us, wonder what Jets fans are feeling after signing a Serie C and D level player.

Are they even professional at that lvl in Italy?

Serie C (or its equivalents today) is professional, Serie D is the highest non-professional league in Italy (effectively 5th division).

His club was relegated from their regional group in Serie D this season, so this is a bit of a weird one.

I saw the Argentinian Tade playing for Wellington 2nds a few weeks ago. Looks good, although whether he is good enough for the A-League is another matter altogether.

For sure. All I can say is he's very passionate about football and keen to stay here long term if he's successful. He likes Wellington.

it would be a shame for Clapham if he does not get a gig at the Jets.....sounds unlikely now.
 
So whats with the new trialist?
As has been pointed out Viera seems to have turned up coz his kiwi missus wants to come back to NZ and the other guy is some kid that answered Ifills call to come down and have a trial. It all seems a bit low key. They might turn out OK but it does not seem like they have been actively scouted by the club. The Hamilton game will show us a bit more.
 
i guess there are two ways to look at this. #1 the club is short of cash for recruiting and will have a more low key "make do" policy. Guys like McAlister and Viera fit into that catorgory.#2 the club have lined up a couple of "Ifill" type players who have such good pedigree that they will be signed and come unsighted. If so you would expect some announcements before the end of the month.
 
Patience..they say is a vital when it come to football recruiting. Rickie was quoted as saying they are on the lookout for a striker, a creative mid and maybe another defender.

WELLINGTON Phoenix boss Ricki Herbert will watch his team from the stands in the pre-season friendly with Brisbane Roar to let his assistants to take the reins.
 

"There are a couple of players specifically I want to watch - especially the trialists - because it's an important time for us to identify where we are and what particular areas we may need to concentrate on in terms of recruitment."

Macallisters looked good at practice today. Given the chance he's got a very powerful shot on him. Him, Greeacre & Ifill were rotating at shooting with Luci and all were getting them in there!

I kind of preferred the front 3 we had with Leo, Ifill and Dadi. It provided everything - lots of creativity with Leo and Ifill and a good target man in Dadi. Also a bit of pace with Leo.

I'm not sure how a front 3 of Macallister/Greenacre/Ifill would work unless it's a 4-4-2 with Mc/Greenie up front and Ifill and Leo on the wings

Cause I can't see Greenie , however much I like him, speeding down the wings (same with big Mac)

If we play that as a front 3 and it works well i'd be extremely surprised

I wouldn't mind a 4-4-2 though but then Manny would have to be left out of the teamvaleo2010-07-08 23:09:28

4411? With Greenie playing a little deeper. Yes, would mean one of 3 central midfielders would get dropped and if Brown is one of those 2 he wont have the freedom to bomb forward into the box like last season.

Or could still have the 3 CM and the 3 attackers, with Greenie playing more centrally than a winger and leaving one side of the pitch to Hearfield or Lochead. Greenie would have to watch fullbacks when defending.

Greenie playing as a lone striker? I guess Ifill would end up playing alongside him as he doesn't track back to defend at all but I think Ifill does his best work when 1on1 with an opposition fullback

Ignoring formations for a minute, with Greenacre, Ifill, Bertos, Super Troy, McCallister, new striker and Tim Brown charging into the box we won't be short of goal scoring options. Will be entertaining once again.
