I think one of the main  reasons Herbert took Clapham to the world cup was to get a real look at him. Would not be suprised if we saw Clapham in a yellow and black shirt this year.

doubt it but he'd be a great replacement for McKain

Yes, from what I can gather he is their number 1 keeper and is starting every week. He is one of only 5 foreign (Not Finnish) players at the club, along with two American midfielders, a Brazilian defender and a Nigerian striker. His side Ekens Idrottsfrening are in the Finnish Kakkonen Group B (The third tier, which is divided into 3 14 team groups), they are currently in 5th spot, and his season will end in early October.

that's almost as good as Capital 2 methinks.
So if their league ends in October, will he stay there till the end of the season or come back here for the A-League?
Worst case scenario he could be our no2 keeper at Varsity next year

Jokes, good job Reece!

Please please please Elliot + Vicelich

Andrew Milne would be a great youth player, been released from Rangers.. but didn't someone say he is trialling with the nix?
Permalink Permalink
over 15 years ago · edited about 5 years ago · History
Elliot and Vicelich would be nice additions and fill gaps in our playing roster - a player who can operate in the middle of the park, and a bit more defensive cover.

Siggy will be itching to play (having not done so for a while) and will benefit from McKain's departure, although losing McKain hurts.

I'd rather see f**king G** slip on the Phoenix Shirt and take the field instead of signing Elliott. You guys do want to win the league right ?

what use is an old man with a receding hairline who can't run for his life doing at the nix ?

I know all of you are in love with this guy and have pictures of him stuck on the roof above your bed for private reasons but COME ON !!! why do you think NO OTHER CLUB WILL HAVE HIM ??? warning sirens right there.........

we can do sooooooooooo much better.

p.s, I know I will get scrutinised for this post but i trust you will keep the abuse to a minimum.

For one season as a squad player, we could do a heck of a lot worse. Vicelich might be of more use to us, though.

lets be honest, it's because he's a kiwi. If he were say an Aussie no one would bat an eyelid at him.

but no one on here likes the truth so what's the point of me going on about it ?

Did he steal your Mrs or something ?

Your irrational ranting and railing against a player that even independents call a world cup first round standout doesn't seem remotely balanced.

I don't think I've seen a stupider post than the one Whoooo just posted.

I mean seriously, did you watch the world cup?

if he was/is so brilliant like you claim, why is there no clubs after him ? not even the MLS wants him for crying out loud and that leagues worse than the HAL ffs.

as for watching the world cup, I was there mate. i paid money to watch Elliot live.

yep, money well spent...........

I was hoping I wouldn't have to see his bald head on the pitch but such is life.

I never claimed anything.  I stated that a bunch of the worlds leading commentators on the game have stated he was a standout.  Oddly I'm going to listen to them more than I may a person who has a record of slagging Elliott off if he even breathes, let alone does something decent on a football pitch.

I think he does have a point that he lacks mobility, but HAL better than MLS? HA!

If you had watched him properly, you would have noticed that Elliott has more than technical quality than any of the other All Whites, and that he took some of the best set-pieces of the World Cup so far.

no. I was referring to Mr Incredible.

anyway listen. Elliott had good MOMENTS at the WC not GAMES. He can't preform for the whole 90mins can he ? you can't say he can without getting red cheeks.

his legs have gone mate. They went a long time ago along with his hair.

it's time he hung up his boots for the last time tbf.

Mr Incredible didn't claim that he was brilliant.

Over the last two seasons, Charlie Miller and Robbie Fowler have proved that old men with no legs left can run A-League games because of their superior technical quality. With A-League midfielders around him, Elliott would probably do similar.

Seriously do you have to mention he's bald or old in every post? What's his looks got to do with anything? He proved at the world cup he still has what it takes against players at a much higher level than the A-League. He was released at the end of the season by a club in a league much higher than the A-League. Elliott is at the end of his career.. but I'm sure he has another season in him, he's looking around the MLS for a club first by the sounds of it. And if you say I want players just because they're kiwi, ofc I would prefer New Zealanders! why wouldn't I? But they have to be good first, and Elliott has proven that over the past three weeks. So did Vicelich, who would be good cover for Sigmund, Durante.

I have never paid much attention to Elliot before the WC but I thought he was very good at the WC. My reservation about signing him is, in part, age related but more that we really do need a creative mid-fielder and I see him as more in the Brown, Lia mold - i.e. a work horse.

Terry was on the radio yesterday and clearly stated, a number of times, his ambition remains to win the League. If we are to truly compete with Melbourne and Sydney, over the course of a full season, we need a "make a difference" creative play maker and, for me, that's not Elliot.

I think he would be fine as a squad player and a backup for Brown and Lia but, if $s are tight (which you would have to think they are) sign the striker, creative mid-fielder and McKain's replacement first and then see if we need and can afford someone like Elliot.

He dribbles a lot and the opposition dont like it - you can see it all over their faces. (Ron Atkinson)

I think the defensive nature of the All Whites hid Elliott's quality from some people. He was the creator of anything remotely attacking for the All Whites in every game from the Aussie match onwards.

Personally I think Elliot is better than both Brown and Lia but I suppose the point is being made that he is too much the same as what we already have and therefore not neccessary. Fair point.

Whooooo, I do not know you and generally don't give a toss about poorly thought out and submitted posts but.... your latest tirade was the last straw. Opinion is one thing but you've just demonstrated [confirmed for many] that you are a knob. At a guess I'd bet you are one of those winging bastards at the football who moan at the top of their voices over every little thing and you are pissing me off.

Elliot would be a massive signinghe more than held his own at the world cup and is the style of player we need, no thanks on Vicelich tho.

Think Elliot is different to be honest. More of a passer than Brown or Lia and gets himself more into the game. I mean sure he wont score goals like Brown but his wide passing will bring our good wide players in to action.

Yes, and I'm also the guy that said you are a knob  There is more chance of Paston having his career extended than you losing your knob status I feel, so I can only ever be 50% wrong.

If we got Elliott, he wouldnt be the workhorse in midfield, we have Lia, Brown, Muscat to do all the running for him. He would be adding the creativity that we need, and lacked when we play. Im sure Ifill would appreciate someone who can pass him into space, rather than having to create it himself.

Not saying I think we should sign him, but if we cant find anyone better, he would be a good fall back if he was interested.

Have you ever noticed how no one agrees with you?

How is it being the bigger man by saying people wank over Elliott. Real mature bro... and I'm 17 ffs.

well the way people behave when I say Elliott is not very good, I mean you are on me like flies to sh*t.

all right, I know I go too far with my comments, I'll be the first to admit that but lets remember it's the internet. A little forum on the world wide web. People need to relax and stop taking things so seriously.

it's the off season, I need to have some fun

Well, I for one would be happy to offer a warm welcome to Simon Elliott should he work up a deal to come 'home' to Wellington. Today's SST column showed he is not averse to considering the idea.

Solid, highly experienced, thinking play maker. Also a very hard worker. Some of our least succesful signings recently promised more in terms of youth, speed etc but failed to go on with it. I think we would get more than our moneys worth from SE who would put the yards in despite (or perhaps because of) his 'maturity'.

I'd like Elliott, but the fact that he's 36 poses some serious questions. How long can he keep that up? How much would he want? Would he settle for a 1 year contract?
