Phoenix Transfer - speculation (Part 2)

Article here mentions Phoenix are interested in Clapham (has this been raised before?)

"Joining the camp will be Canterbury midfielder Aaron Clapham - a player Wellington Phoenix have also been tracking."

I like us giving guys from the NZFC a crack if they're good enough (Siggy, Coralles and Krishna having trials etc.) as it shows the pathway for young kids. And makes those ACFC knitting circle folks keep quiet about the purpose of the Nix etc.

Clapham had been training with the Nix the previous season, played in some friendlies too (notably the 3-0 loss to TWs).

And isn't he a wide midfielder? Cos if we buy another one of those I will inflict some serious self harm.

He pretty much has a free licence as an attacking mid with Canterbury.

In the Nix friendly against TWs, he played right back first half (awful), and then in the middle in the second half (looked decent, but at a time when both teams made wholesale changes). Looked decent for Canterbury against TWs in Porirua a few weeks back, but I thought Barron looked much better than Clapham in that game.

But Clapham's obviously done well throughout the course of the season, so he deserves the look-in he's getting now. But even if signed by the Nix, don't think he has the quality right now to be anywhere near a starting place.

I think we must bear in mind one significant fact. Apart from seasoned professional players, it is quite possible to change position to younger, less experienced new players.

Look at Manny. Did he play holding CM for Green Gully? Don't think so. Same for Lia and Hearfield.

So I think, if we sign a player (especially a younger one) from the NZFC or NSW or VPL et cetera, we shouldn't give too much credit to their "usual" position.

Surely we won't buy a keeper and turn him into a winger, but I think you can catch my drift. I reckon Ricky and Luciano know so much about football to find out quite quickly what positions one player may cover best at the Phoenix.

Look at Manny. Did he play holding CM for Green Gully? Don't think so. Same for Lia.

This from Manny's Phoenix website: "A versatile defender who has excelled in the Victorian Premier League, Muscat adds even more pace and skill on the Phoenixs flanks. Has the ability to play on both sides at the back and has played regularly as a defensive midfielder with Green Gully."

And I am sure that CM has always been Lia's preferred position.

Doesnt Danny Invincible come off contract at Kilmarnock at the end of the season?

Ask Old if he's any good. His name alone would be worth it, really. (even if it isn't pronounced like it's spelt)valeo2010-04-21 02:56:16

Pronounced "In-vinch-e-bee-lay"

Find an Italian to do it for you.

He's historically been looked with the Raw (like, EVERY season) am assuming he's from that neck of the woods... who knows. I'd buy a shirt tho!

Agreed. He's not quite there yet but has a huge amount of potential, I think. Is one of the fastest players in the league as well but doesn't get to show it too often playing at DM.

Though I did think he was younger than 23..

I think he'll stay with the Reds, though..valeo2010-04-21 12:45:12

Should be able to afford him with Ferrante and Mulligan gone.  Get him long term and let Diego go once his contract expires.

Also could bring another Adelaide player in Barbeiro, who I think is coming off contract.

We need a striker, a creative midfielder and youth spot fillers before we think about adding another player in a position where we have three regular starters already.

That is correct (not sure if Marrone suits playing further up the pitch), but should always be looking at improving your squad especially if their is an opportunity to.

Creative Midfielder is key, we need someone with defence splitting passing abilities...which we have never had. I don't dive in here often, but this is always my one biggest request of the phoenix, bring me the A-League version of FABREGAS!

Agreed, I was thinking he'd be good just to give the media a hand with headlines. He may be too similar to greenacre though

Left back cover would be useful as well.

True, but if that player also covers CM (where we currently have Diego and McKain, neither of whom are the most useful cover), it would be very useful.

Are there many of these in the A league, at all? Not of Fabregas quality, but even of the type you describe.

I don't pay enough attention to the other A-league teams to know if they exist or not (Miller and Hernandez being the exceptions)

I'd love Dodd from Adelaide...  Would add some speed to our attack.

remeber Hernandez has Archie and Kruse to run on to the through balls he plays...we don't really have speed in our attack, and what we had we sold in Costa.

Though a lot of space Thompson and Kruse do find are in wide areas, something we could take advantage of if Ifill and Bertos are pushed forward, possibly more Ifill.

I would like a "fast" player. Greenarce would be so much better if he was quick, there was quite a few times when it was his speed getting to the ball that a chance went missing. Greenarce is great, but just another alternative upfront or out wide.

Up front, yes, but wide players are the last thing we need.

We need a target man for Greenie to run off. He may not be the quickest, buthe is smart.

With a target man up front Ifil and who ever else plays wide will be able to push up more as the cd will have to play tighter as wll the rb and lb to cover flick ons etc etc.

Just a question, has Dadi actually been released yet??

didn't he used to be quick in his prime and then get injured? I'm a fan of what Greenies done this year, but feel like I want him to create a bit more, or make some of those low percentage chances every now and then...
