Clapham doesn't have a pro club though

If we do sign North and our other 3 signings match him for quality then we'll be right up there as title contenders this season.  Exciting times.

This has me bemused as to who the Kiwi player might be, at a club and a possible starter. Same for the youth player, but one of the 4 might not necessarily be a youth, as we have room in our squad numbers for 4 senior and 1 youth to come in

"Herbert could not reveal names because the players were still employed by other clubs and the Phoenix were trying to negotiate the breakout clauses in their contracts.

"But rest assured, those four players are really key, those four players would arguably be in the starting XI. So, hopefully, you can see the intentions of the club and where we'd like to take it. The club's been very proactive in that area."

I'd assume the youth player would be in addition to these 4 which would be a good thing.

I really don't want Boyens, Vicelich would be so much better but I do wonder about maybe Bright?  I wouldn't mind him here, though having said that I would want a striker at the club more proven than any we currently have, and I can't see us signing more than 1 striker so I guess that would rule Bright out.

The kiwi will have to come from this list.. So the likely possibilities are marked by an *..

Goalkeepers
Mark Paston (Wellington Phoenix). Age: 33. Caps: 23. Debut: 1997
Glen Moss (Melbourne Victory). Age: 27. Caps: 16. Debut: 2006
*James Bannatyne (Team Wellington): Age: 34. Caps: 5. Debut: 2001  <p>

Defenders
Ryan Nelsen (Blackburn Rovers). Age: 32. Caps: 41. Goals: 9. Debut: 1999
Ivan Vicelich (Auckland City). Age: 33. Caps: 72. Goals: 7. Debut: 1995
Ben Sigmund (Wellington Phoenix): Age: 29. Caps: 13. Goals: 1. Debut: 2000
Winston Reid (FC Midtjylland, Denmark): Age: 21. Uncapped.
Tommy Smith (Ipswich Town). Age: 20. Caps: 1. Goals: 0. Debut: 2010
Tony Lochhead (Wellington Phoenix): Age: 28. Caps: 30. Goals: 0. Debut: 2003
*Andy Boyens (New York Red Bulls): Age: 26. Caps: 16. Goals: 0. Debut: 2007

Midfielders

Simon Elliotttt (unattached). Age: 35. Caps: 70. Goals: 8. Debut: 1995
Tim Brown (Wellington Phoenix): Age: 29. Caps: 28. Goals: 0. Debut: 2004
Leo Bertos (Wellington Phoenix): Age: 28. Caps: 31. Goals: 0. Debut: 2003
*Michael McGlinchey (Central Coast Mariners): Age: 23. Caps: 4. Goals: 0. Debut: 2009
Aaron Clapham (Canterbury United):  Age: 23. Uncapped.
David Mulligan (unattached): Age: 28. Caps: 30  Goals: 5.  Debut: 2002
Jeremy Brockie (Newcastle Jets): Age: 22. Caps: 17. Goals: 0. Debut: 2006
Andy Barron (Team Wellington): Age: 29. Caps: 14. Goals: 1. Debut: 2006
*Jeremy Christie (FC Tampa Bay). Age: 26. Caps: 20. Goals: 1. Debut: 2005

Strikers
Chris Killen (Middlesbrough): Age: 28. Caps: 36. Goals: 17. Debut: 2000
Shane Smeltz (Gold Coast United): Age: 28
Chris Wood (West Bromwich Albion): Age: 18. Caps: 6. Goals: 0. Debut: 2009
*Rory Fallon (Plymouth Argyle): Age: 28. Caps: 4. Goals: 2. Debut: 2009

https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/fifa-world-cup/3676399/All-Whites-World-Cup-squad-named

And..

From this list you could pretty much cut Bannatyne and Barron (because of how he has a comfortable job, been around the nix environment and what not). It would be unlikely to be Jeremy Christie as he was just recently released. Killen (I think) has been released by Boro so that would rule him out. This would leave Fallon, Boyens or McGlinchey to choose from.

If we get Jade North, then I would say we won't sign Boyens.

Hopefully its not Brendan Gan

Just idle speculation, with absolutely no foundation whatsoever, but Suree Sukha of Thailand is a centre back who has also been used as a left wingback/midfielder on occasion at international level. Also, his brother's at the Tards.

Unless Paston has kept quiet on a transfer overseas, would we really need him? I'd love to have Mossy back but three keepers, especially while we have don't have a youth team, seems a little wasteful.

I'd love to see Mossy take over from Vukovic at CCM, before coming back to us when Paston retires.

This might be a stretch, but - the Stuff article didn't expressly say only four signings would be made. It said up to four high-calibre signings, which could mean "Four first teamers and one youth".

Other than that, I'd say you're right and the youth would probably be Australian.

Jade North hasn't been starting for TIL, and remember he was going to be North Queensland's marquee untill he left. Would be a great signing. Although slightly different positions I'd say he's better than McKain. Could even be an Aussie marquee?

Better not be, id rather see another kiwi come through, even if he doesnt get that much game time it would be a great stepping stone. Look at Costa

I'd say the kiwi will be a youth player. If not then Kris Bright or Andy Boyens. Can't see the Mariners losing McGlinchey, we don't need a third keepe so no Moss.

Agree with you there, I'm still hoping the youth player is Lovemore, if not then another Kiwi.  But if one of those four is indeed a youth player, what NZer is out there that is both under 20, under contract to a pro club and good enough to challenge for a starting spot?

My money is on Kris Bright AND Sean Lovemore, alongside the other three.

Aussie youth have a good enough chance of making the A-league as it is, but kiwi youth? Thats a different kettle of fish. And im sure the Nix realise this.

I don't understand why any aussie youth would sign for the 'nix. They're simply not going to get first team game time, - or ANY at all, because we don't even have a yoof team.

Sure, it's money, but is there a path to progress on?

Stuff says 'a current all white' whatever that means.

Missed that. It actually says current All White. So can't be Bright. But if we get North then we wouldn't need Boyens?

This is what I was thinking. It may be that we sign five players, that reference is made for high-calibre.

Tbh, I'd take any of those mentioned.

I also think that there is a fair chance that we'll sign Johnny Chen again. This I'm not so serious about.

Kris Bright has a long term injury.  Can't see us going for a player who wouldn't play.

Since when?  He played the end of the season over in England.  Or has he got it in the off-season?

I'm holding out for David Dodd, personally.

TIL just recently published an article on their website about Jade North finally starting and actually playing well. But in saying that there has been a few departures and arrivals to the club in the past week, but no movement involving defenders.

We are definitely missing some sublime Dodd family passing in the midfield

Not exactly to be taken as 100% accurate i know but, wikipedia has this to say:

"While it had not been officially announced Dodd is believed to have been released from the Roar from June 30, 2010."

Suarez for the South American? Could be a useful RGK until Crowther gets back from Finland!

Bugger, guess that rules him out... Maybe it's Dyron Daal or Ivan Franjic?
edit... hang on, Dodd actually has a wiki page?

That current all white statement is not what Ricki is quoted as saying. It could well turn out to be true, or the reporter came to that conclusion when Ricki said a New Zealand player and that all 4 of the targets should push for a starting spot.

Plus I like speculation not being limited to a group of 23 (and probably on 2/3 realistic options).

I would not mind Jade North at all. Have not seen much of him at club level but I thought he was solid when he played for the Socceroos.

Didn't realise that, good thing it was metaphorical money then

Also missed the current All White mention on Stuff. Hrm...maybe Boyens as CB with North being targeted as playing RB for us?

If we did sign Boyens he would probably be 3rd choice central defender. Sigmund has just about always been ahead of Boyens for the All Whites, again doesn't fit the description from Ricki "those four players would arguably be in the starting XI"

wel you could argue that boyens would compete for a spot... but you'd lose

Unless the Phoenix had to play Spain, in which case Boyens would be an absolute shoe-in as a starter.
