Johnson's obviously seem me with my MK Dons scarf on at games, thus he knows he has a built in fan base already.

Would be happy with Johnson after seeing that video, but am yet to be convinced about the Chilean.

I'm looking forward to hearing if these go official. I'll reserve judgment until when I see them play, as I'm not sure you can really go off Youtube videos and reports of how they have done in very different leagues to the A-League. All very exciting though!

Not quite the big deals we've been hoping for following the McKain pay-day though.

just out of curiosity (as unbiasedly as possible) who do we rate higher Mckain or North?
Permalink Permalink

I'd rate McKain higher, but haven't seen enough of North.

I'm not convinced we need to replace McKain; Siggy is good enough.

I like the look of JJ, will have to reserve judgement on the chilean.
Jemal looks to have lots of pace and good attacking intent, very exciting!

I'm still hanging out for North though, that signing is key.

But i dont think we can go into the start of the season without a replacemnt CB if/when injuries and supsensions hit.
And competition for places is never a bad thing.

agree... imagine a centerback pairing of Durante and North, it suggests an extremly capable defence

You could win a championship with a defence pairing like that!

I know, I know, its serious!

Funny fact Tromso IL's stadium has a capacity on 7500.  Went to watch them last year. Got a waffle and a cup of punch at halftime. He doesn't start at TIL. Would possibly want to be closer to family.

The word is Ricki wants to replicate the All Whites system and play with three at the back and had intended that to be Sigmund, Durante, and McKain, but now hopefully McKain will be replaced like for like by North...and that will allow him to play that system,

It also means if one of them is injured/suspended he can revert to 4-4-2 and play two of them.

Desperately need another centre back whatever system he plays, you can't start the season with just two recognised centre backs...suicide

Ifill wasn't exactly on fire in England when we seen him (freed from Palace and trialling at Brighton!) so lets have some perspective on this Jemal Johnston who is 5-6 years younger than Ifill and potentially still has his best years ahead of him.

I hope he signs.

And the others too...bit worried it's all been made public though and now I will be disappointed if they dont sign!

edit - after watching Johnson's youtube video I think he looks quality! Some of those goals were crackers. He'd do the business in the A-League no problem I reckon.

I shudder every time I read that - haven't we been there done that - admittedly with players inferior to North, Durante and ....... Three at the back (which is actually 5 a lot of the time) may be fine when you are up against teams who are quicker and more skillful and you are looking to shore up the defences and score with long balls to the likes of Fallon........ Not sure how it would work when you have your fair share of possession and want to dominate a game going forward - anyway Herbert is paid to figure that out.

Just deeply scared from our season one 3 at the back disaster.

Anyway - on thread topic - one of the best ways to suss out prospective transfer targets would seem to be current club fan forums - a quick glance of Adelaide's fans forum would have spared us from wasting 2 years and an import spot on Diego.

I haven't looked at the fans forums for the latest rumoured targets but if anyone has I'd be interested in what the fans are saying.

Johnson: 148 games over 7 seasons for several different clubs, producing 20 goals. He began in the EPL as an 18 year old and most recently played on loan at Stockport in League 2.

Career going in wrong direction for some time. Not to say he couldnt do ok for Phoenix, but certainly doesnt look like we'll be uncovering another Ifill.

If he is a winger, that goals record could be tolerable (it must be better than Bertos!), not if he is a striker.

Think you're being just a bit too sceptical - he's younger than Ifill, has a bit of pace, competent with both feet, and was apparently in the Top 10 for assists in League 1 this past season even though he hardly played for MK Dons in the last 3 months of the season (he plays out wide for them, not as a striker).

The info on him is that he's a bit inconsistent (1 cracking game for 2-3 poor ones), but in fairness that's similar to info we were getting about Ifill prior to the start of the last season. He's played at a higher level than any of our other players barring Ifill, and at his age, he's definitely worth a punt at this stage. Doubt he'd be overly expensive, and he could also end up profiting from a shorter season (like Ifill).

That grain is the most we have had to go on for a wee while!

I also see that a newspaper report on a MK Don's pre-season game published earlier today says:

"Noticeable by their absence from both games were Jemal Johnson and Jude Stirling - both of whom were sent out on loan at the end of last season."

That - to me anyway - seems to indicate that Jemal Johnson is on his way out of MK Donland.

Jude Sterling, now there would be a signing.  An ok footballer but he had the longest throw in I have ever seen.  Became an instant hit at Stevenage Boro.  Every throw in was like a corner, it was hilarious watching Conference defences trying to cope.

Could very well do 3 at the back, or some version of that. As described by Zonal Marking, it would free up the full backs to push forward:

https://www.zonalmarking.net/2010/07/16/sergio-busquets-world-cup-final/

https://www.zonalmarking.net/2010/04/22/is-the-sweeper-set-for-a-return-to-prominence/

So team could be in defence (current squad members):
              Paston
Bertos/Hearfield Sigmund      Durante   Lochhead
               Muscat
          Lia        Brown
Ifill                          Daniel/Bertos
            Green/Mac

And in attack:
              Paston
   Sigmund    Muscat       Durante
               Lia
Bertos/Hearfield Brown          Lochhead
       Ifill Green/Mac Daniel/Bertos

Yep - read that too. Bit of a worry if he's unhappy being away from his kid a few hundreds kms away. Don't think he'd come here if that is the case.

JJ would be a good signing, some people on here need to sort their expectations. We really need some defensive cover.

unless he relocates his family. At the end of the day, we speak English and have baked beans. should be a piece of cake. Also, Welly has such a lovely atmosphere. Surely he will fall in love with the city like Ifinho and Daniel did?

Must have seen me with My County Scarf (The Scarf My Father Wore) also. If he does sign he'll be playing in front of bigger crowds than he was with Stockport.

does this guy ever pass?

3 assists against Leeds and in the top 10 assists last season says he does!

I guess good passes don't cut it for the youtube highlight reel

No problems with me if we sign this JJ guy. Fast, shoots well with both feet and with a good record of assists in a not too bad level in the UK.....plus he is young! how many other Nix attackers fit this description?

He would be more than a good replacement for Caceras. We need a good imapct player coming off the bench. He would put lots of pressure on Leo to up his game.

Jade North would be a good signing too. The South American would be like buying a Lotto ticket....dream and hope!

Not sure if these signings are just wild rumours but I thought the club had learnt from year one to keep a lid on player signings....i.e keep it dead quiet until you have the signature on paper. Now its all become a bit messy. If JJ and North were targets and end up not signing then the whole thing is an embarassment for the club.  Would never have happened under Tony P. We now have only 11 days to fill the roster....expect some signing action soon.

It'll be especially embarrasing if other A-League clubs sign them ala Porter.

JJ seems decent. Gotta a feeling this South American could set the league alight or could be worse than George. Jade North'd be quality.

So you have a feeling he could be really fantastic or really awful.  Your "feelings" seem to cover an awful lot of ground, sure you're not just sitting on the fence on a player about which you know absolutely nothing?

Yes. But as are most people. Of course I'm sitting on the fence with this player but looking at the history of South Americans in the A-League tells me they are very hit and miss. This is what I am basing it on. I don't think many people on here know a lot if anything about him but if you want to give me a complete run down on his strengths and weaknesses then fire away.

Also says Roberto Carlos is coming to trial. So that is good I think. Because then I can hopefully make a less ridiculous comment on whether he may or may not be good in the league.

yes I expect a full report on his performance on Friday's game.

he's played for some good sides in Sth America but it's a very different ball game over there plus he's had so many clubs.  I think we can guarantee he won't be an immediate hit that's for sure...
