Well he never completely ruled out Krishna or Corrales either.
 
 
I does not surprise me at all that Tony has not ruled out Putter or Astroclaus.....these players have a good pedigree. Both have scored plenty of goals at a reasonable level.
 
There is more to a trial than just what the player does in their short spell in a couple of trial games. Realistically you could not expect a player coming out of their off season...jetlaged, to tear up a trial game at such short notice.
 
The trial is about firstly; is the player carrying any serious injury. Then the player can be assesed for attitude and their ability to fit into the team structure and environment.
Then comes the biggy....terms.
When Putter said that he did not think he would fit into the Phoenix structure this was probably double Dutch for" we currently can not agree on terms"
 
It is highly likely that if the "no need to trial striker" does not get signed or Anderson turns out a dud then the club would go back to Putter and Astroclaus and renegotiate terms.
This should not be seen as " signing failed trialists". Its just part of the process.

Unfortunately, many on this forum- and the Phoenix management- seem to have got their info on Ramos from Wikipedia (English) which is two years out of date and lists Al Hazm (Saudi Arabia) as his current club. (NB This is not a well-supported, though maybe a well-financed, club: Al Hazm's stadium has a capacity of only 3000).
See Wikipedia (Portuguese) for the most up-to-date details on his recent clubs:
There it lists Guarani as his current club- they play in  the local state league ("Cearense" Championship of Brasileira state). The CBF (Brazilian Football Association) rank Guarani as the 94th best team in Brazil.
 But that's a few steps up from last year where he played for Sao Jose-POA who play in the "Gaucho" state league and the new National Serie D (Fourth Division)- the CBF rank them as only the 244th best team in Brazil!!! I'd imagine that wouldn't be much above our own NZFC?
Another concern-this guy has already had more clubs than Arnold Palmer- I count sixteen listed at :
He seems to have played for one club a year in the last four years- but that's way more settled than previously when he had on average two a year.
So don't expect him to hang around for long if he does sign for the Nix. Maybe it's a bit worrying that the club are reduced to looking at players like this who seem a little mediocre.
Hope he doesn't end up living up to his name ("Potty")!!!

I agree. I think atleast we need to give Putter a chance if we can. If he is keen to play then give him a chance.

AUCKLAND - Seattle Sounders FC has released Jarrod Smith, after the All Whites forward underwent surgery last week to repair a torn right hamstring tendon.

Smith, 25, will stay in Seattle with the team to continue rehabilitation and the franchise retains his MLS rights.

The former Hawke�s Bay United striker was selected by Seattle from Toronto in the 2008 MLS Expansion Draft but had been on the disabled list since March 5.

Smith�s release creates an opening on the Sounders FC roster.

A member of New Zealand�s squad for the 2009 Confederations Cup in South Africa, Smith�s involvement was hampered by injury, making only one appearance (against Botswana).

He last saw action for Sounders FC in a U.S. Open Cup third round game at Portland on July 1. His only other appearance was in an Open Cup play-in match on April 28.

Smith played 20 games, starting six, during his rookie season with Toronto FC.

is he actually any good? Ive never seen him play apart from the oceania XI. i hope he can stil remember to score since hes hardly played in recent years.

He'd be a good signing if fit - a squad player in the MLS would be a quality player in A-League

From Ricki's latest interview on Newstalk ZB, the signing that would not require a trial is coming from Europe, and has had a very good career so far.

smith would be good signing. but seeing he was released due to surgery i would imagine it's going to be a long wait before he's back playing again.

Id take any one of them, their all over 6ft and have played at high levels. Decent ages too, not young but probably at a good time in their life to move to the other side of the world!
 
Looking forward to the feedback of Anderson tonight, but i do hope there is something nice for us that is being kept in the pocket of Tony and Ricki, hopefully an experienced, highly sought target man!
 
Hopefully our top 3 strikers will be Anderson, Greenacre and Suprise automatic signing.

Exactly right.....Ricki and Tony have both frequently said that they will not waste money on a "name" player.
 
This "we will sign untrialed striker" is most likey someone similar to Greenacre....a good solid pro with a good record of goal scoring at Div1/Championship level.
 
Must say on further analysis Pottys recent record does not fill you with a lot of hope. Drifting around a lot of clubs....not scoring many goals or even getting much game time. Sure hope he works out but don't get your hopes up.
 
I would not be surprised if Astroclaus and Putters names come up again.

I personally feel like midfield is pretty down packed and the only real issue is whether we have enough creativity in the middle of the park to distribute to our strike force.
Daniel/Hearfield/Bertos/Rojas etc could fill these flanks.

Agree - although I'd rather Putter's than Astroclaus. He should be given a shot and apparently he is quite keen to come to an English speaking country so why not give him a proper trial?

Potty's Pedigree is quite debatable - as is Astroclaus. Don't know if either would suceed in the nix? But I wish I was proven wrong...
