why  not sign the barron as an all round utility? at least swap him for mulligan anyway haha

Wouldn't be opposed to that at all.  Get rid of Mulligan, Diego, and Ferrante and bring in Barron and one or two others.

Is McKain our secret Marquee player?

Last time people from the club spoke about him he had been moved under the cap for this season.  Not sure if that has changed to included Dadi.

This may sound a little harsh but I actually don't think he is crucial to our team . I would absolutely love him to stay and am not a hater but we have  Durante and Siggy and they did a great job playing together at the back when McKain was injured. We also have enough defensive centre midfields.

sigmund for mckain....not for me....sigmund  at the peak of his game isnt a patch on mckain....also i doubt we would see mckain punching an opposition player as sigmund did....mckain is class siggy is really enthusiastic...thats a big difference in my book...doubt ricki is in any hurry to rid himself of mckain as i seem to recall he went to pretty big lengths to get him initially

McKain is a key player to re-sign IMO. There's a reason why Siggy hasn't just walked back into the starting 11. I'm not saying to make McKain marquee etc., but keeping him would really help us. The fact we have a really solid core of players bodes well for the rest of the season and into the next.

Haha, if I was him I'd leave, I saw them going into their hotel after we tonked them and he had to drag the kitbag with a sad look on his face. Gave me a laugh and a half.

Would like to keep J-Mac he's just so composed at the back and relaxed on the ball, and not a bad goal threat either these days.

Good link to the Nix article on the homepage (Paston et al re-signing for next season)

"As well as Paston, Crowther and Hearfield, confirmed squad members for next season are skipper Andrew Durante, New Zealand internationals Leo Bertos, Tim Brown, Ben Sigmund and Tony Lochhead, Daniel Cortes, Diego Walsh, Marco Rojas, Maltese international Manny Muscat, Vince Lia and gun British strikers Chris Greenacre and Paul Ifill.

Pignata said the club was still in talks with former Socceroos centreback Jon McKain, while there would also be discussions with the clubs two newest recruits striker Eugene Dadi and keeper Liam Reddy."

Happy, happy, joy, joy.

End of next year. Good moves by the club and the players, only signing on for as long as we are guaranteed in the league. Once that mess is cleared up, we can sign them on for longer.

I see Reecey as a good solid back up for Pasty for the forseeable future, and Troy has become a top player out on the right hand side.

Just wondering.....if Paston has only signed for a year does that mean he may retire after next season. He will be in his early thirties....has just started a family and admits the traveling and being away from home is a drag.

Fair point, could be one year because of uncertainties around license but could be retirement on the mind aswell.

Maybe after next year Mossy may come back, realise he was an absolute fool to leave and want to be back under Ricki building up to our tilt at the 2014 World Cup

I am very pleased by all 3 signings - the squad is looking very solid for 10/11 - four observations;

1) I continue to give thanks for having the best owner in the league. It is a measure of his passion and commitment that he continues to invest, in tough times for property developers, in the club.

2) Players want to stay at the Nix - that is a credit to the clubs professionalism - most of all due credit should be given to Ricki Herbert for creating an environment that attracts and retains players.

3) Tony P's contribution should not be underestimated - the back office seems to run well and Tony, through his persistence (Ifill signing) and initiative (Dadi signing) has made a huge contribution to the on field results.

4) The ambition to win the league is clear in the comment; "

The Phoenix have now re-signed a significant core of the current squad for next season, which will allow the club to focus its efforts on bringing new talent to Wellington next season. It will make it easier for us to go out and look for key personnel at the end of this season, said Pignata. ......"

Wellington Phoenix - play-off contenders - loving it !!

Particularly pleased with Hearfield re-signing, and now just really hope we keep McKain as well.

The fact that so many are resigned so early bodes very well for next season.

It could really work out. Good playoff run this season, we keep the core of this season's roster together, we add a couple of key players, and we look good for next season.

The uncertainty with our license is sure to be a sticking point in contract negotiations, but it's nice to see Pasty/Reece/Troy stay on anyway. McKain/Caceres/Reddy are also re-sign candidates.

This team is very well run. Players have no problem coming over to Wellington and staying here. It's good signs.

In a recent article Paston was saying how he just wants to take it one season at a time and if he's enjoying himself he'll keep playing, if not he'll retire.

And if Moss was to come back I don't think it'd be for a long time (not long enough to be under Ricki's nose ahead of the build-up for the next world cup anyway) as he's said he's wanting another crack at Europe.

if Reddy has a "done deal" with SYD as you say el g, then why are the nix in talks with him ?

that makes no sense what-so-ever.

They're not, it's just a convenient way to keep the pressure off.

If Nix admit he's gone to us, media pressure piles up in the finals about loyalty and other such nonsense. What then happens if SFC get WPFC in the finals? (very likely since we're both likely to finish in that 3-6 bracket IMO).

Best kept under wraps. That way Reddy (and Bolton for us) get to go through to year's end relatively unscathed by the media talk. When the season's done, Reddy can announce he's going home and Bolton can announce he's off to Heart. Meanwhile Paston takes back over as #1 next year when fit.

The fact that we resigned both Paston and Crowther should give you a hint as to whether keeping Reddy is a realistic possibility.

It's really as about a big hint as you can get.

I don't want 3 keepers - makes no sense to sign someone extra and give them no game time.

Problem is that Paston is comparitively injury-prone for a keeper, and Crowther has potential, but not the ability of, say Moss, or Reddy.

It would be great to sign McKain again, but if I was him I would be disappointed at missing out on the Socceroos squads that are comprised of A-League players. It seems the Aussie league clubs are chosen before us. Therefore he may want to move across the ditch.
Remember Farina had said publicly he wanted McKain at the Roar, but the new coach Postecoglou has signed other defenders instead.

If we have some sort of reserve/youth/NZFC/Masters team it'll be an easy sell to have three keepers... otherwise not so much

He won't crack Europe sitting on the bench at the Victory...

Only hope is the World Cup, and he'll have one game if any.

One game?  5, actually.  Last group game, round of 16 game, quarter-final, semi-final, final.  Like I said, that's 5, not 1.
