If this is correct, we've offered Kruse youth marquee status and six figures. I think he'll be a Nix player next month..

In the article in the News section he refers to himself in third person " I just have to decide what's best for Robbie Kruse now"

I know I've changed my mind about this about 4 times but I've decided I don't want him.

He looks like a knob in that pic of him on the homepage.

Some of Shane Smeltz's mullet cuts were bloody shockers but his goals were great

Didnt we keep Richard Johnson on after his indiscretions??

I do know...he is one of the highest paid players in the MLS and the pin-up boy for the national side.  If he's going anywhere it's back to Europe, not a 4 week stint in Wellington for a fraction of what he is paid in the US.

FFS.

Are you saying that he is more likely to go to Europe and play there as a guest player?

Well on the basis that he did last off-season and has a stated ambition of securing a contract in Europe I think the chances are pretty good.

He did spend 90% of the time on the bench but you're right, we probably couldn't afford him. Might be an idea to go for a loan deal on Jarrod Smith and Andy Boyens. Would give them some  time with R.H before the Confed Cup. Could even try and get Chris Wood on loan.

I think you would find that the confed cup is before the start of our season and the mls doesnt finish until about november

Richard Porta as a season loan from Sienna.

Needs to get more game time in front of Pim to have any chance of being a possibility for WC2010, a stint in the HAL would work. Not really the target man we are after but decent cv.

You should be more worried about Targetman - that will be the season defining signing. Whitby boy2009-05-20 19:14:40
He dribbles a lot and the opposition dont like it - you can see it all over their faces. (Ron Atkinson)

I thought Pim discouraged internationals from playing in the A league. However, looks like he knows how to find the back of the net, scored a truck load for River

It's the Uruguayan River Plate - a small club from Montevideo. For at least half of Porta's time there, they were in the Uruguayan second division. el grapadura2009-05-20 22:24:24

Kruse cruises off

A blessing probably

<!-- Split page --> <!-- Lead Content Panel -->

""BRISBANE Roar remain in the hunt to re-sign Robbie Kruse after the former boy wonder rejected a lucrative offer from Wellington Phoenix.

The Phoenix were willing to make Kruse their under-23 marquee player in a deal that would have pocketed the attacking weapon close to $150,000 for a season's work.

Kruse had until tomorrow to make his decision, but by yesterday he had made up his mind that plying his trade in New Zealand was not the best move for his career.

Player agent John Grimaud praised his client for making a "mature" decision that was best for his football rather than be lured across the Tasman by big dollars.

"I'm not shocked at all," Grimaud said. "I think Robbie made the right move. He could have just made a rash decision and gone over there."

Grimaud accepted that Kruse could not expect to command a similar wage at any other A-League club, but said money was not the priority.

The Roar have limited dollars left to offer Kruse under their salary cap, but in Brisbane's favour is his good relationship with coach Frank Farina.

It's understood at least four other A-League clubs, including Central Coast Mariners, Adelaide United and North Queensland Fury, are also interested in Kruse's services.

The former Australian under-17 international last night said he was in no real hurry to finalise his future, with his Roar contract not expiring until the end of next month.

Kruse was certain he had made the right call in knocking back the Phoenix.

"I had to be 100 per cent committed to going and I wasn't," he said.

Kruse praised Farina for sound advice the former Socceroos coach passed on about his next step in football.

"Whatever decision I make, I know the gaffer (Farina) will support it," he said.

Kruse, 20, was adamant that he wanted one more season in the A-League before trying his luck overseas.""

Setting aside your views on the merits, or otherwise, of signing Kruse the worry for me is we can't seem to close deals.

We are slowly but surely slipping behind the recruitment 8 ball.

I totally can see where you're coming from. I personaaly thought that signing him as marquee was a good thing because I think we need to build awreness of our club but It seems like we have really bad rep over there.

Makes it feel like Wellington is totally unattractive.

Maybe he didn't get along with our players or something? Maybe he'll end up wanting to change his mind when all the other clubs dont sign him haha

Well, while my personal dislike of Kruse isn't as deep-seated as HN's, I'm certainly happy he's not coming. He's not the kind of player we need, and wouldn't have strengthened the squad at all imo.

But your point is a very important one - we do seem to have a problem attrecting players to come and play here, and I'm afraid that's probably going to be the story in the future. We're a small town, the weather's not great, our future in the A-league is under question mark, we've lost two of our best players and haven't really been able to bring a genuinely big name to indicate the club's going places, and mix in the salary cap, and you are faced with a very difficult task that the Phoenix are faced with in trying to bring players over here.

Add to that no chance to play in the ACL and no youth/reserve team.

completely agreed ae, Im worried that this is how it might be, we have lost two great players, while dodd left and made negative remarks about the club, as does kruse, even if we do offer him a big contract.

Coz of this wouldn't a youth team be imperative, in that the nix need to develop homegrown players like the Roar have done with Nicholas, etc
