I'll take it but wow that has to be one of the ugliest victories we've had.  Nobody played particularly well at all for either team.  MOM would probably be Paston.  He was by no means outstanding but better than the rest.

I'm struggling to think of worse performances.  Definitely the round two match of season one against CCM.  Can't be many others though.  Obviously the heat was an overwhelming factor in it.

We didn't get any bookings did we?

I can't agree with that at all. Ifill, Bertos and Sigmund were especially good. The back four were solid and dogged in extremely trying conditions. To me that was the best of our wins this season in terms of commitment, spirit and professionalism.

Fair enough.  Probably wouldn't agree about Bertos.  I thought he was adequate, no more no less.

"if anyone reckons we didnt play well. then try playing in 38plus degree temp!!!! We played good enough which is why we have 3points"
I don't think we played particularly well at all and I put that down to the temperatue alone.  But spot on, we were good enough.  The fact the three points were gained away from home makes it all the more sweeter.

Man of the match had to be Sigmund.

He was a rock for us at the back today. The whole defence played very well, but Siggy just repelled everything thrown at us. Fantastic.

Ifill was excellent in the first half, quieter in the second but he really is a class above pretty much everyone else in the league. Diego was quiet, unspectacular, but solid - did enough today, but I think Lia should return next week.

his shot two minutes into second half was a world class strike (and world class cross from bertos, and world class save- so all round good footie )

Yeah Everton, think Lia comes back in for Diego next week. Vinny's been one of our best all season.

Pardon?  Nice finish.  Almost another "beauty" denied by a miracle save.  Several moments of deft touch.

Stoked to get the 3 points! Bit of a meh performance but we were definitely better than them. Vignaroli would've ruined my day if he'd finished that one at the end though.

Great performance by the guys tonight, one of those games that necause of the conditions, all u have to do is be better than the opposition, flag playing attractive football, 1-0 is all we needed and these games are the ones we have to win to be a force in the top 6.

Bring on those orange bastards!

Good performance in trying conditions..Greenacre looked stuffed at last drinks break with cold towel over his head......take the win under any conditions but today was a great battling effort with team putting themselves about.  Not fluid passing like at ROF but...

A small town in Europe........looking to bounce straight back up....well that aint going to happen

Good result considering the conditions, extreme heat and humidity is very difficult to play any type of sport in. I was wondering why they even had a game scheduled at 4 in the afternoon at this time of year.

With such high humidity your sweat can't evapourate, which is how your body normally cools itself. So the players would literally be roasting in their own, erm, juices. A few people here don't seem to appreciate what those sort of conditions can do to even highly trained athletes.

Okay but given who has played internationals would imagine he has played in the heat before. Not all of us are trainspotters.

Agree..he did a good job for the team. Newcastle have problems[they are sh*t], be lucky to win another match this season on that performance.

would be interested to see what crowd numbers we get at our home game against Melbourne. With qualifying for the WC. and Phoenix winning. (hopefully they'll beat brisbane pussycats next week.) Hope our YF fan base increases from 7k to 20k. Hell even 34,500 Y not. darkhorse2009-11-22 22:35:21

The a-league is probably the only league in the world where you go from playing in the freezing Wellington southerly one week, to 40* the next, would kill you!

Great game. Can't fault it, really. So pleasing to win away from home (finally) in that kind of weather. Siggy and Dura were immense.

Isn't it great to see the confidence, smart arsse almost. Who was it juggling the ball on our goal line before they cleared it? Daniel's step over to let the ball go for a throw...

Oi Oi Edgecumbe... lets have a clean sheet

Permalink Permalink

I think that was Bertos doing the juggles. Not Daniel for a change.

Permalink Permalink
over 16 years ago · edited over 13 years ago
The juggler was Leo. He was aiming to hoof it clear but got the next best result when it rebounded off their player for a goal kick. He was really confident today - back to his best.

They all seemed confident really. I didn't have the feeling we would lose. Of course, it probably should've been a draw if Vignaroli didn't miss that sitter though...
