Hmm,but they way we play seems to require more defensive work in that position, rather than just being a deep playmaker.

But alright, ill bow down to greater knowledge

How is McKain doing? Shouldn't he be fit by now?
He was training ok today but did seem to maybe have a bit of a problem at the end.

Sigmund is still waiting for a Facebook fan page to be formed in his honour. Game saving goalie Mark Paston is fast approaching 1,000 fans on the social networking site.

Anyone going to do this for him?

This is clear cut:  Mulli is an AW and needs match time. We all know he has been found out both at the Nix as well as for the AWs but he is a mid who, WHEN REQUIRED plays RB.  If any of you were present at the U17 games in '99 you would have witnessed Mully playing in the mids and playing very well (he was NZs top scorer).  I know thats 10 years ago but still valid point. Plus is a better setpiece taker then virtually anyone else in the AWs or the NixHe's not been given an adequate chance to prove himself.  Give him a wee run then judge... if he's still crap then, c u!

Oh. So he spends 10 years of his professional career mostly as a right back who's pretty much failed to impress in most places he's been, but what really testifies to his ability is an age-grade tournament held ten years ago where he looked half-decent? If he was such a talented midfield player, wouldn't one of the professional coaches he's worked with for the past decade have recognised that talent, and given him the opportunity to express and showcase it?

Post of the day El Grap. He is a right back that can't cut it and when he has had chances, he has been ordinary. Got an extended run early last year and was rubbish, got a run at the confeds and was..... yup you guessed it. But 3rd time is the charm right? Say it with me.... Rubbish

If his form at training (that everyone raves about) is so good, he would have started ages ago when they were looking for wins not draws.

Grumpy old bastard alert

Fair enough that he's never performed competitively at CM other then '99, but I;ve never seen him play as well in training and preseason games at RB as he does at CM.

I agree JV, I think that I will give the side one flat game in the aftermath of a momentous occasion in NZ Football, but as you say, only one.

Come on. We said this after the first leg as well - they were tired.

Then we said we'd probably be due a let down after the Gold Coast 6-0 games as well.

And now they'll be a bit flat 8 days after a morale boosting WIN and qualifying for the World Cup?

We can't afford to drop any more unnecessary points and no AW-related excuses will be acceptable this weekend IMO.

Have to make sure that we are still on the high of last week--- easy to say-- Newcastle are no mugs, and also expect the weather to be around 30.

if anything i think it will lift the team. costa, mulligan, etc will know they have to play hard to get chosen in the AW squad. Paston's form as soared. we now need to produce some good wins and prove that saturday wasnt just a one off.

I reckon Bertos will be starting again, he looked a lot fresher with his last few starts off the bench, and now the WC qualifier is out of the way, I think his mind will be back on the Phoenix games.

That's pretty harsh on Daniel/Costa though, who have been brilliant for the Phoenix for the last few games and one of them would have to drop out.

Depends how fresh and fit the players are I guess. Daniel has been playing his best since our first season, but Bertos looks to have his attacking flair back.

With Lia out:

            Paston
Manny Dura Siggy Lochy
            Brown
Daniel                 Bertos
            Ifill
       Costa   Greenie

I know Ifill likes to play wide, and tends to get there, but I think he suits our team playing more central, when he gets in the middle, he creates a heap of opportunities for those around him and for himself.

Bench:
Caceres
Hearfield
Ferrante
Crowther

Looks about right :P

If Greenacre is out with injury, move Ifill up front with Costa, start Caceres, and bring Marco onto the bench :)Ard Righ2009-11-18 12:30:18

Don't think Costa was great against Perth - screwed up our two best chances (though Leo probably would've too)

We would get slaughtered in the middle with that team.

I honestly think whatever we do, we're going to struggle in the midfield without Lia or McKain fully fit.

And since we did a decent job against Newcastle last time, and the fact we need wins from now onwards to stay in the Top 6, I'd say attacking formation away is a worthwhile gamble to take for this game.

How exactly would Caceres stop us getting slaughtered in the middle when he can't defend and normally drifts out wide?

I think Caceres if he plays should play out wide. Looks best down the left flank. But who knows, I haven't seen a lot of him.

Mulligan is likely to be the one in for Lia

Don't be surprised to see Diego on the bench either

Got to remember that training is not a game though. Theyre effectively in training matches against the reserves. I think Mulligan may get the nod,if only just to keep formation and style of play.
