I'm sure I'm not the only one who frequents this forum who might have spent some happy times in nightclubs in England in the early 90's to think of this classic tune

Boca Juniors  - Raise a classic from Andrew Weatherall

I've been waiting ever since to get the opportunity to see the team play!

Also brings the 'quadrennial'? opportunity to trot out a list of music/footy crossovers

Bring it on.....

Great news. Even though most non footballing kiwis would not know who Boca are the momentum from the WC plus the overlap from the Nix's great season from last year should mean a good crowd.
Shame it is not Everton....an EPL team would probably pull a full house.

Seems like some promoter is underwriting the game. So its a win win situation for the Nix

Boca Juniors lined up for Phoenix
Wellington Phoenix will play a glamorous pre-season soccer match against Argentina club giants Boca Juniors.

The New Zealand A-League club announced the match to The Dominion Post newspaper, believing the July 23 encounter in Wellington will be financially viable.

Club chief executive Tony Pignata said the match would be underwritten by a Singapore-based sports media company, making it a safe bet to host their second big overseas club in three years. In 2007 they staged a match against a Los Angeles Galaxy side who included England midfielder David Beckham.

Pignata said an undisclosed match fee plus a share of any profits left him comfortable with hosting one of South America's most famous teams.

"It's a good earner for the club," Pignata said.

"We will basically run the event for them, with marketing and booking the stadium, but they are underwriting the whole thing.

"Commercially it made sense. I've always maintained we'd only look at these sort of games if it was commercially viable, and it is."

Boca Juniors are scheduled to play Melbourne Victory in Melbourne earlier and end a world tour against Liverpool in England.

</>
The current side includes veteran Argentina midfielder Juan Roman Riquelme and their World Cup squad striker Martin Palermo.

Their most famous former player is Argentina great Maradona, the current national coach, who played two years for Boca in the early 1980s.

Agree, I am sure though that there will be a fair bit of marketing from the club along the lines of come to see silky samba skills (even though that is the wrong country). There should be a decent turnout

God would you please stop enticing me back to Wellington. I've already outspent my sporting budget for several years.

This is huge for football in NZ. It's like the LA Lakers playing the NZ Breakers, but a better roundball code

Wonder what the NZRFU are thinking this morning... "sh*t" or something stronger

Waiting for ticket sales announcement!

Boca in Wellington!?

PINCH ME!!

Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

I find it pretty cool how this is a club which plays different sports..

But obviously most famous for their football heh.

We will never fully decide who has won the football.

Fairly common in Europe.

Barcelona and Real Madrid the most obvious examples.

Associazione Calcio Milan

But yes, you are right in general - the club was founded by the English expats as primarily a cricket club.

In honour of its founders the club retains its anglicised name.el grapadura2010-05-27 14:11:25

You're right about Englishmen founding the club, but wrong about the 'C'. The C stands for Calcio, which is Italian for Football. Association Football Milan.

Calcio Fiorentino was an early form of football that originated in 16th century Italy. The Piazza Santa Croce of Florence is the cradle of this sport, that became known as giuoco del calcio fiorentino ("Florentine kick game") or simply calcio ("kick").

I did wonder if it was common for large clubs to be more associated with more than one sport..

Did not know about Barcelona and Real Madrid.. That is awesome.

Am guessing most or most famous English football clubs are not structured like that?

We will never fully decide who has won the football.

No, it's mainly a continental thing I think.

Barcelona Handball

Real Madrid Basketball

Panathinaikos Basketball

Crvena Zvezda (Red Star) Volleyball

Partizan Waterpolo

Slavia Prague Ice Hockey

Maybe the Nix should take over the Breakers.  the seasons interlock nicely (virtually no overlap).

LMAO this journalist obviously has heard of Wikipedia

http://www.goal.com/en/news/808/australia/2010/05/25/1941412/boca-juniors-to-travel-to-australia-to-face-melbourne

Regarded as one of the biggest clubs in the world, this trip will be Boca Juniors first to Australia in its 105 year history.

In that time they have won a record 18 international competitions, equal to the feats of Italian giants AC Milan. While domestically they have won 23 national titles second only to great rivals River Plate (33).

Boca Juniors has had a long standing rivalry with fellow Buenos Aires based club, River Plate. Known as The Superclasico it is one of the fiercest and most important derbies in world sport - with very little separating the two after more than 300 encounters.
From Wikipedia:
Club Atltico Boca Juniors, known simply as Boca Juniors or Boca, is a popular Argentine  sports club, best known for its football team. Its home base is the neighborhood of La Boca, in Buenos Aires, and their home field is Estadio Alberto J. Armando, better known as La Bombonera. Their main rival is River Plate, with whom they contest the Superclsico.

The Superclsico is known worldwide as one of the fiercest and most important derbies.

Not *that* excited, to be honest, but it's great to hear that another company is underwriting much of the cost - it's basically a win-win for the club.
