Just out of interest, what do we think the bench will be like? Obviously Daniel and Caceres/Bertos. Most likely Dadi but then you probably want a more defensive option as the last sub. This is usually Siggys spot but of course he will be starting.

Potentially David Mulligan? Ferrante? Could well end up being Diego or Costa or Marco with Muscat being defensive backup.

Unless we succesfully appeal.

Right, well it looked like two fairly clear and fair yellow cards to me. It would be a complete waste of time appealing.

Definitely no appeal by the club over McKain's red.

Yes he does. He leaves at the end of the season pal.

Someone told me before the game that Costa has already gone. Not sure if he was correct though... Sounds stupid to me to let him go.

I agree. The scheduling of this All Whites game was really quite ridiculous given that this situation was a possibility. Playing the day after a flight back from LA is going to be really tough, and could even cost us the game given the number of players involved.

Not much we can do about it now though I guess?

Careful, we are starting to sound like Melbourne.

And to be fair. The finals have been scheduled for months and months now.
We can't blame the FFA for making it hard for us.

Even worse, we're sounding like Plymouth Argyle. Who was it who wanted Fallon dumped from the AWs because he didn't want to go to Mexico and leave his club in the lurch at the business end of the season?!?

I'm not blaming the FFA, I am blaming New Zealand Football and whoever else decided scheduling this game was a good idea.

I agree that the finals have been scheduled probably since the season began, that's why I can't believe we find ourselves in this situation for the sake of a friendly.

Last I heard was that he'd join up with Brisbane in May for preseason training, until then, he's with us.

this the right thread for PAX reports?  2701-2703 at 7.45pm Monday.  Isn't that a slower start than for the Perth game?  i bought mine same time on last Monday and i was 5000-something....

Ricki - "Sorry mexico - we don't wanna play you.  The nix may have a playoff game a few games later".

FFS.  It's a fifa window. Get over it.

Geez, NZF can't win. A week or two ago everyone was yelling that they hadn't scheduled enough friendly for the AWs, now we've got one against good opposition which we can get the European players to and... *sigh*. Some people aren't happy unless they've got something to be unhappy about.

BTW, Steve-O, there are a few comments in the Coaching Angst thread that you might be motivated to respond to.

Nobody is compelled to play just because it's a FIFA window.

How about scheduling a game closer to home, or not at all?

You think the fact that this game was scheduled right in the middle of the finals was a good idea? Of course it should have been considered that the Phoenix might have been in the finals. It was a gamble arranging the game and my opinion is that it should not have been at this time.

Im pretty sure that we accepted the offer to play then and at that time.
There is more that goes on than just deciding when to play the game.

I'm too busy with FIFA window angst to deal with that right now

Currently Nelsen is injured, Fallon doesn't want to play, and half of the team have to play the most important game of their club careers just 24 hours after a 13 hour flight. It's hardly an ideal scenario.

I wasn't one for saying get more friendlies but I concede it's unfortunate nobody wants to come over here and play. Scotland pulled out of a planned tour at the end of May because the new manager didn't want to come! I hate him.

Do any Newcastle players have Aussie duty, I know they get back earlier so the timing is not as bad, but would be nice if they suffered and injury or two.

I hope Tony S. is making a killing off this final run, after all the money he's pumped in knowing he'll lose it, it would be good if he got some kind of windfall.

Do you realise that the Nix and NZF are two different entities?  NZF should not base decision on what the nix may or may not have on.

It isn't ideal.  I will grant you that.  But it is probably one of the few chances to play a team that play a similar style to Paraguay.  Btw, where is closer to come.  Should we play mexico is kiribati or something.

Basically NZF and ricki didn't have the balls and faith to say Phoenix would be in this position
Permalink Permalink

Yes I do realise they are different entities, but surely there is a bit of discussion? Surely the manager would have quite a bit of input into the situation, particularly when he is managing both teams!

I didn't mean play Mexico closer to home, I meant play another country closer to home. I'm sure they tried and all but basically asking the entire squad to fly halfway round the world in the middle of the season is a little bit much IMO.

Also, how much time is Ricki Herbert going to have in Wellington between now and the Newcastle game? Off to South Africa and then is he going straight to LA??

Have you been living under a rock all season?
The aim was a place in the finals since the 08/09

Like who? an Asian team?  That would be meaningless as we don't have an Asian team in the WC.

There have been a couple of instances when Ricki has been away prior to a game.  Trani and Gould have coped with it.  Lke I say not ideal.  But NZF need to make decisions that are best for them.

New Zealand are playing Australia...technically they are an Asian team

He's usually not away for this long though is he? I'm unsure how necessary this trip to South Africa this week is when he has from March 21st (at the latest) until June to make that same trip?

My complaints are basically down to worry. I am worried that the international players will be knackered and jet lagged on the Sunday. I have done Sydney to LA flight and I was all over the place for 24 hours at least and generally felt like crap. Alas, I am not quite as fit as your average professional footballer, but still!

edit - and now I've just realised what the headline could be on the Monday 'Phoenix suffer JETS lag'

I have those worries too.  But it is illogical for NZF to turn down a game against the 20th best team in the world, because in 3 months later the NIX may have a game a couple of days later.  Ridiculous call.
