Patston was impressive, as was BoomBoom.

Not the best ofmanaging from RH I thought, needs to recognise what we're doing wrong and get it into the players. Subs came a bit late as well, it was obvious we needed some new ideas in the final third.

I think we need to have more confidence . how many shots in total did we have? not many in the first half. Defence I thought played well. But we really need to capitalize, especially when they have 9 men. How did the jets player miss the open goal though.

It was a very very ugly 3 points and yes, I'll take them.

Not everyone turned up tonight and some were simply poor.

A few can hold their heads up (Bertos, Hearfield, Daniel and Sigmund) most of the rest need a rocket.
He dribbles a lot and the opposition dont like it - you can see it all over their faces. (Ron Atkinson)

13, 9 on target. Jets got 8 with 4 on target.

Really disappointed with the game. Herbert hasn't got a clue. Why take Fred off??? Did Terry spend months geting here as a marque player for 6 weeks only for him to be subbed off.....not likely. Fred and Daniel would have carved up. Get McKain off, he gives the ball away too much. Subs were too late also. Smeltz should start packing his bags if he not going to work his butt off, 9 men... he should of had a field day.   Everyone went home feeling flat

And what are your coaching credentials?

Fred drifted out of the game in second half.  probably lacking a bit match fitness as he hasnt been playing for a number of weeks. I'm also backing Ricki on this.

Just back from the game.

Looking at the video replay, Griffiths had to go no doubt about that.

But Dodd was quite lucky not to go as well, even though he was obviously sorely provoked. It appears the ref saw Dodds relatiation too.

Apart from that Phoenix played well without creating anywhere near enough chances, and were lucky not to be down as certain points in the game.

Sigmund was stand out again for me, Muscat did well, Bertos was a threat, Ferrante was at least prepared to shoot, Fred looked handy without delivering much (why oh why didnt he let one go when he went through?), Daniel added a lot and created good opportunities.

Lochhead, well I dunno, some woeful crossing.

Paston still scares me too often, great penalty save of course.
And what a goal from Smeltz, if we have someone who can finish like that, why the hell cant we get the ball in better and more often?

Did Griffiths have a little smirk on his face after he kicked Dodd until Dodd kicked him back?

You cant get match fit sitting on your arse on the bench. The game was ideal to get him back into the mix. RH should of left him there, he would have been better for it next week

From what I saw at the game, I thought Fred had taken a bit of a knock not long before being subbed.

He got hit by a Bertos shot in the nuts and before that he had been doing a lot of running plus he is hardly match fit as the MLS has been over for a while. Besides when Daniel came on we looked better straight away. So, I think Ricki made a good sub.

Great to get the win. Fred will be be good value particularly if Smeltz pulls finger and makes the runs and stops straying offside.

Muscat was solid as a rock and unlucky to be dragged while Lochead stayed out there. RH please tell Lochead that he needs to get to the byline and cut the crosses back, credit to him for getting forward but back yourself to get to the line and cut it back.

Paston, great penalty save but some scary moments as well.

RH good call to move to playing three at back and bringing Daniel on. If being picky could have happened a bit earlier.

3 points without playing that great I'll take it.

When you haven't had a game for a while, most coaches will take you off at 60-70 minutes because its the last twenty that you get muscle injuries. I back Ricki taking him off at that time.

I was at the game and I dunno what all the negative people in this thread are on about. Mckain & Brown bossed the centre of midfield while it was 11 v 11, Dodd and Sigmund were the same at the back apart form the mix up between Dodd & Pasty. Muscat was full of running, Lochy didn't have a great game but he did his job defensively, he needs to work on his crossing. Bertos got through a heap of work, but he needs to work on his crossing as well.

Overall I was pleased with the performance, we struggled to get our tactics right against 10 ( and then 9) but switching the play was the right thing to do, unfortunately the crossing was a let down after some great passing moves.

Some defensive mistakes were a worry, but when aren't they?

I thought Tarek El**ch had a great game for them, he casued us alot of problems.

ffs some people are negative . WE JUST WON

there has to be a point where scraping 3 points against a team below you on the table, when they have 9 men, at home is not good enough.

yes 3 poiints are important timmy, but this is entertainment and we were just not entertained. it was a poor display, fact.

but we'll take the 3 points and move on.

Newcastle won a league title with performances like that last year. Personally, I'll take 3 ugly points any day.

People bitched last year when we outplayed teams but didn't win (cue the Newcastle match last year) and now the team gets a win but didn't outplay the opposition and people still bitch!

You can't please all of the people all of the time - take the 3 points and be grateful!

ricki called Lochy over to the bench , when one of their lot was doing his dying swan bit, after that Lochy stopped lolloping up into covic's mitts

Just had a flick through the crash and burns forums.Bloody hell are they bitter and twisted they make our forums look positively tame after we have had a loss.

As for the game i will take any win when it comes our way, just wish our guys would think about things at times. It was bloody obvious for all to see that high crosses were not the way to go.Our inability to change our tactics is bloody annoying.

Was frustrating for quite a while there but Newcastle did defend well. They have v sound back four and Covic is tremendous. Possession told in the end. Great header from Smeltz and great delivery for both goals. Good to see Bertos playing well. We have controlled games much better in the last few weeks, although Id love to see some more incision up front still.

Paston saving that pen may have kept him in the starting line up, which will probably come back to bite us. He was terrible coming off his line (or not coming) again and he has been shaky pretty much every game he's started. Long-term it is a worry I reckon.

Hello all, well now that was great! Hard work but great! This winning thing is ... well... OK.
Seems that the mantra of "GET YOUR CROSSES IN EARLY"  may well be being chanted somewhere.

Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

Agreed. Whether or not we played attractive football the reality is that home wins are few and far between for the nix. Under the Yellow Fever title at the top it says "Supporters of the Wellington Phoenix FC" and if thats how you feel after a 2-0 victory then maybe you should be elsewhere.
