Phoenix vs Sydney

edit: I quoted myself instead of Wellyphoenixfan sorry.

to be honest at this stage I don't care much about HOW we play. The points have to be our main concern. An ugly win is still a win. Of course, if the team played like vs Perth or vs Newcastle (1st half) every week we would probably get pretty pissed off, but since that's not the case, I am happy to watch 3 boring games in a row if that means play-offs!

I don't think we ever set out to play a boring game, but unfortunately that has occurred in the past. I can understand Ricky wanting to have a defence-minded set up when we play say vs Adalaide or Melbourne away. But I think he and the boys now know that if we attack and pass the ball around, we can beat every team in this league. At the same time, the first rule is "do no harm". So I'd be always happy with the Phoenix being careful not to concede a truckload of goals - see last year - and then come out in the second half playing brilliant football and pick up some points.

Agree we need to start with Daniel and Hearfield... no place for the human crab Ferrante whom seems to have dropped right off in the last few weeks. We have looked a lot better when we have gone out to attack and not sit back.. we look far to stretched laterally when we do this and we arent quick enough to close the spaces down at the back..Tim Brown does a great job with McKain and should  be left to play.

It's ridiculous when we sit back because even though we have 7-8 players behind the ball they allow huge amounts of space at the edge of the penalty box. valeo2009-01-08 21:02:17

im scared, syndey have nothing to lose, and some of there bung players returning like colosimo. on the flipside we are pretty much perfect against the bling. i cant see RH trying anything new at this stage in the season( sorry fans of the 5-3-2 formation). on last weeks form, they will find sonny fai before Ferrante finds form( to soon?).
I have an amazing ability to find my way out of mazes. I'm pathological.

[QUOTE=wellyphoenixfan]

My team for this week: 4-1-3-2
                  Moss
Muscat Siggy Dura Lochhead
                 McKain
Hearfield Brown Daniel
           Bertos Smeltz

I expect Moss to retain his spot even though I would prefer otherwise and I think we will see Ferrente dropped in favour of Daniel. This game against Sydney is probably a must win considering we play Melbourne and Adelaide the following games.

THANK YOU VALEO

Finally someone who recognises that. that comes from trying to play Ferrante as a 'defensive midfielder' - he is bloody invisible. Brown and McKain to play in front of the back 4 with 3 + 1 in front of them.

Sigmund, Dodd and Durante all in the squad.

I hope we don't have a defender on the bench; we need all our attacking options.

C'mon Ricki, show some guts, go for the win!

Even though I can take a joke as well as anyone, as a Warriors season-ticket holder I'm not finding that too funny

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

love this little bit when they talk to Smeltz.

Who in the world do you most admire?
Probably right now it is my wife Nicole. We have two young daughters and she does a fantastic job with them which allows me to concentrate on my football.

Ferrante has been playing too deep, I agree.  I think its a good chance to start Daniel, give him a chance to prove himself and make Ferrante prove he's worthy of starting again.

I think Dodd's been a rock. But yeah the captain should probably play. Especially becasue Dodd has yet to decide where his future lies...

Last time Durante missed a game he didn't automatically get his spot back though, he had to sit out a game against Newcastle.

Ummmm bollocks.

We need to pick the best eleb + subs every week from here in... I don't care if someone signs for Al-Qaeda for next season tbh. Are you suggesting we don't pick Smeltz or Moss? Didn't think so.

If Dodd (or whoever) deserves to be in there on form, they get picked.

End of.

We have enough quality cover for Siggy.....but it is a real shame.
I'm a bit concerned about hearing Ricki talk about a conservative approach! Um.... whats the point. Conservative against Adelaide perhaps but Sydney are in array. Get stuck into them with our best attacking side. Their defense has been shocking...go hard at them early. Our back four plus McCain Brown will hold up our defense.
if we play deep again and try and nick a 1-0 win then we are in huge danger of coming unstuck. Sydney have goal scoring talent...we don't want a tight game. They are low in confidence after 4 losses....hammer them early and they will be shagged. The longer they are in the game the more likely they will think they can win it.
The last thing we need is to drop points and then afterwards wish we had been more adventurous!!!!

What do Moss and Smeltz have to do with this? This is a completely different situation.

If there's a tough 50:50 call on two fit, in form, quality players going for one position then I suggested that Dodd not resigning could be a contributing factor.

Sorry, but I don't see a problem with that.

If we don't play Dodd then who do we play there? McKain has been good at DM and not playing Dodd because he might move is a stupid reason not to play him. If we play him he is more likely to resign not less likely.

The point of the discussion was that if Siggy was fit, Dodd's place may have been at risk.  Siggy is out so now it's not.

Dodd will play. I think wingback4eva is talking about the currently hypothetical situation in which we have all 3 CBs available.

hmmmm Dura or Dodd....

Thats not even close after the last 2 weeks.

Durante - and thats based on form.

No its not. If you are suggesting that a players contract situation should be a consideration as to whether or not he plays then why haven't you called for Smeltz or Moss to be replaced?

Exactly.  The question is....what is the best back four when Muscat, Dodd, Durante, Sigmund and Lochhead are all fit and available?

Ok then but if Dodd does leave we should get a youth CB but for next season I think getting a youth team is now more important then ever. Or atleast loan out our players to like Team Wellington because how are we meant to develop talent in the long term. The Phoenix in my mind have only helped 3 NZ players so far in its history and they have been Sigmund, Smeltz and Moss but no youth players like it was suppose to.

Disagree
With form, injuries and suspension, if there was no Dodd this weekend, would you want to put a Youth CB in alongside Durante?
You sign the best players that present themselves. If no one presents themself then go after a Youth CB. If Dodd walked next year and say Kevin Muscat said 'I want to play for you' you bloody sign him. If you can't get anything, then go the youth option. I'd also say we tried the 'Youth' option in Old and O'Dor and look how that worked. The young kid Kovacevic that played for the Knights, another. Youth CBs have been tried and rarely do they work.

Plus the Nix can't loan players to NZFC sides. Been discussed 1000 times, needs regulation changes and exemptions to happen so just not even up for discussion

Was just having a chat to Silent Assasin who made the valid point- had this been last year we would have been calling up Old or O'Dor, instead of Dodd/Durante/a quality Siggy. One of the many reasons we sit where we do this season as opposed to last!

Thats one of the most sensible things i've ever heard you say, probably because someone else planted the thought though. Very very true however.

I would be shocked and stunned to see Daniel start this week, we will revert to the side that had been playing so well with Jon, TB and MF anchoring the midfield. Daniel was okay last week but certainly not sensational

Haha well Forest's 3-0 win vs Man City rubbed off on my Retro Ricki giving us the same result, so I'm happy I wore the Forest shirt.  I did of course wear my RR over top during the game ;)

Shame Siggy's out, Dodd is going to be fine back there though - just get him marking Aloisi ;)
