Well our defence was better than last year.  That's what I'll take from tonight.
Melbourne's goalie top class.  I was sure he was beaten but managed to keep it out.
How is Lei Lei's ankle, got trod on midway through the second half?

I wouldn't mind it so much except he was laughing straight after it.

Still I'm happy with the way things went. That first half showed some good football and hopefully the excitement will spill over into a decent sized crowd come the BIG kick off. Just dont ever let Dodd take another penalty.

PS: Hearfield hit his penalty brilliantly.

You cant blame Dodd at least he made the keeper move unlike another player.

Melbourne's goalie was the difference for me tonight he pulled off two top stops. Right hand top corner one being the best so far.

He's referring to Smeltz, probably took too much advice from Beckham.

They played very defensive and were all round boring to watch, resorted to the hoof to Allsopp way too often.

Very impressed with Mckain, solid, but has a hell of a funny voice.

Cant blame Dodd, hes hardly the most technical and was one of the last to step up to take one - good on him IMO

Wasnt impressed with Bertos at all, lost it way too often and Kemp matched him for pace

Stayed around after and he had ice on it while he was walking off and had his boot off.

Harsh? That's just plain crap. He took a penalty because he was 11th in line and all the others had taken theirs already.
The way Dodd played should shut up his critics unless they are either A. Melbourne suporters or B. Stupid

Our defence was simply superb and that was the best defensive display I've seen from the boys

Unlucky.

Predominantly played them off the park, lacked the final ball (Bertos and Gao were both hit and miss), but destroyed them and got stung by pens. Very unlucky.

Ferrante is still a waste of space, but McKain is phenomenal. Such a beast, and very good on the ball.

Solid season ahead in kiwiland.

Anyone can miss a penalty. I think its completely unfair to blame Dodd or Smeltz..Ronaldo did it the Champions league and he's arguably the best player in the world. I think they're a heap of positives to take from the game. Our defence looked solid for most of the game something sorely missing last season. Muscat should definetely be signed in my opinion. We dominated Melboure all over and were unlucky not to score on a number of occasions.

However that said, I think our crossing is leaving a lot to be desired and especially as most of our attack comes from the wing. Gao always looks dangerous on the ball but he drifted in and out of the game. Coveny didn't have a great game in my opinion either.

In the end we were the better team and it's very unlucky to lose on penalties.

Great crowd - superb atmosphere.

Would of course have loved to have won but glad we had the extra game, I think it will have helped Ricki make a few final selection decisions for Aug 17.

Player highlight for me was McKain - I thought he was rock solid. Durante and McKain will be a bloody formidible pairing. I thought Muscat was sound and I actually like Hearfield at right back - he can defend and gets forward with real pace.

A few players had quieter games tonight - I think it makes a real difference when Daniel is on - play seemed to flow through the midfield better and our attacking players had more space and time - he draws the defence in.
He dribbles a lot and the opposition dont like it - you can see it all over their faces. (Ron Atkinson)

Penalties are a lottery.
By the run of play we should have won 2 zip.
But were blunt at the sharp end.
Daniel to start next game.Cov's made a difference?
Like to have seen the forgotten one on instead (costa).
The good part about a loss is it shows that theres lots of work to do.
Defense 8/10 Midfield 6/10 Attack 5/10
Lots of hit and hope passing, but early days and sure looks better than last year.
We are a great top four chance, then its anyones.

Do you really "win" a game that goes to penalties?  In my mind you "win" the penalty shoot out, the match was drawn

Yeah, good effort on the crowd.  Was a tight contest between two evenly matched teams that was, quite obviously, dominated by the defenses.

Looking forward to future tight contests, though hopefully with a few goals.  Really expecting Phoenix to make top two this season.  Good luck.

I picked a draw after 90 with a phoenix win in extra time. Obviously there was one small problem with that.

What's with going straight to penalties? If I had my way, you'd have extra time, then if still even throw them all back on again until someone scores. But normal extra time and then penalties should be a minimum.
