Real shame that Phil doesn't work for RYOS now. Would have been priceless seeing him sell hobbit shirts

In a partnership between two franchises with strong ties to Wellington, New Zealand, December 13 will see the Wellington Phoenix take the field in a special one-off jersey.

That's cool. Another example of the club uping their marketing and brand game this season. I appluad all of the initiatives they are taking.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

Phoenix fans. We have to win them over one fan at a time.

What is the annual budget for the Phoenix and what for making the movies? 5 vs 150 million? How many people ever watched a Phoenix game and how many people watched one of those movies? I would say it is good deal for the Nix, nice world wide exposure.

Cringe-city...

People already only associate NZ with Hobbits, Sheep and the All Blacks.

Not sure how this benefits us in any way unless theyre paying us to market their movie.

Well except there is no indication that the Phoenix will get mentioned in movie previews etc.

There is not enough facepalm in the world for this bullcrap. Peter Jackson was a decent filmmaker until he became Hollywood rich and decided to twist the Government's arm so that he could continue to pay Kiwi actors etc for cheap, and I don't think the Nix should be making him any more money. Plus, I'm sick of Americans making "hobbit" jokes about my nationality, it's worse than the "sheep-shagger" ones.

I don't see what all the fuss is about. It may even get a few more pimply faced pencil neck nerds involved in sport, even if for only 1 weekend.

The thing i find funny about this though, is that this 'celebration of Wellington' is taking place in Auckland. Could they have not worn this kit for a game actually in Wellington?

The next game in Wellington in on the 28th of Dec, two weeks after the release of the film. That's far too late for Warner Bros to get the exposure they want.

You should read up some facts. It's a good business and brings money into Wellington an NZ in general.

Brings money into whose pockets, exactly? Not the actors, after the Govt changed the law so WB/PJ didn't have to pay actors minimum wage. "Trickle-down economics" is bullshark; some people getting rich doesn't make everyone rich, quite the opposite.

I am a season ticket holder. Unfortunately I can't make it to the Auckland game this year. But happy to give the ticket I have been allocated to someone else who is keen. Drop me an email at thejcofoz@hotmail.com if you are keen or know someone who is interested.

Cheers

So is our kit Orcs XI or Dwarves FC?

Don't see how there's any negatives here. It's just a one off jersey. Don't like? Don't buy it.

Given Huawei's interest in the Phoenix playing in Auckland, and that they are giving up their front of shirt sponsorship for this game, you'd hope the Hobbit people are given the Phoenix a sharkload of money to do this.

Not sure I want to go see the Hobbits playing.

Think PJ has royally fudgeed up these movies and the entire adaptation of this book. Both on the tone of the script, the unnecessary characters and the excessively digital nature of many of the effects. It's overbearing and swings unevenly between the cartoonish and overwrought melodrama.

I thought the 'Nix were something in their own right and Wellington wasn't a sub-set of what Peter Jackson wants. For me the yellow and black stripes are what I want to see the 'Nix wearing, not some bloody clown shirt.

Add to that the deceptive nature of his dealings with the NZ public and frankly I would do it for a Taika Waititi film...well actually I'm sure he'd have the class not to ask for the 'Nix to change their shirt for him...maybe just have the ref dress up as a vampire or zombie or something...

Do you think they give up their front logo? I thought it would more a Middle Earth themed color.

Selling the soul a Football club to a Chinese electronics company is fine, but making a little themed shirt for the world wide beloved movie franchise that brings in tons of tourists to NZ is a clown act?

Happens all the time in sports.

In F1 a few years back the Jaguar team (okay more than a few years) ran a James Bond livery, and had flawless diamonds mounted on the nose cones, predictably one of the cars crashed and the diamond was not found amongst the wreckage.

Good for the nix to get the sponsorship, and probably extra exposure on the news.

Ha that's actually not a bad way of looking at it. Has changed my attitude a bit.

Although I would then counter with "it depends how it's done" - the nix shirt does represent the club somewhat, a sponsor logo is one thing but if they change the entire nature of the kit then that is a bigger deal and should be done with care. That may sound a bit precious (LOTR pun) but a few fans probably feel the same way.

What did they ask us to change apart from the sponsors logo? How about a new strip celebrating a new Speights cider or Boxing day sales at the Warehouse?

There are accepted conventions for sponsorship. And there are things that define a football team...

Gave him the benefit of the doubt on the racism. There was an outside chance he was just refering to all sponsorship...guess he's up for stopping any exports to China.

It's a bad hobbit adopted by NZ in the late 90s and even though we'll stop using it in 2015, it'll take a generation to get back to getting rid of that annoying middle earth

Wellington Phoenix collaborated with Huawei to celebrate the film with a custom jersey. Dome adds: “We are appreciative that our major partner Huawei is supporting the Phoenix in this endeavour by making way on the front of the jersey”.

You are a racist.

How do you expect football clubs all over the planet would survive without sponsorship?. So whats your plan to publicise the match in Auckland?. The LOR's is hot news at the moment...its a great idea to get some leverage off the movie franchise. We are fighting for our place in the entertainment business. If Auckland gets a bumper crowd then it will make it more likely that the Nix will come closer to breaking even..which is great news for the club.

We can do without people like you on this forum
