In a partnership between two franchises with strong ties to Wellington, New Zealand, December 13 will see the Wellington Phoenix take the field in a special one-off jersey.

That's cool. Another example of the club uping their marketing and brand game this season. I appluad all of the initiatives they are taking.

I agree. Why be a muppet when you can be a hobbit!

I seem to remember the Rabbitohs spent the first half of a recent season with an advertisement for one of Rusty's films on the front of their shirts. I don't see any harm in the idea personally but there is a line to be drawn on the number of kits you're playing in and advertising, just look at the end of Wayne Scurrahs time at the Warriors where I think they had nine different playing shirts on sale last season.

Sorry this isn't match related, though I hope we do well in our Hobbit inspired shirts, anyone remember those come play shirts??? I believe those were the worst.

I hear a rumour that the players are visiting WETA studios and having special adaptations done to their boots to help them fit in with the theme, any one know if this is true? ?

Not sure I want to go see the Hobbits playing.

Think PJ has royally fudgeed up these movies and the entire adaptation of this book. Both on the tone of the script, the unnecessary characters and the excessively digital nature of many of the effects. It's overbearing and swings unevenly between the cartoonish and overwrought melodrama.

I thought the 'Nix were something in their own right and Wellington wasn't a sub-set of what Peter Jackson wants. For me the yellow and black stripes are what I want to see the 'Nix wearing, not some bloody clown shirt.

Add to that the deceptive nature of his dealings with the NZ public and frankly I would do it for a Taika Waititi film...well actually I'm sure he'd have the class not to ask for the 'Nix to change their shirt for him...maybe just have the ref dress up as a vampire or zombie or something...

Selling the soul a Football club to a Chinese electronics company is fine, but making a little themed shirt for the world wide beloved movie franchise that brings in tons of tourists to NZ is a clown act?

Twunt

Gave him the benefit of the doubt on the racism. There was an outside chance he was just refering to all sponsorship...guess he's up for stopping any exports to China.

No racism, please!? The 'soul' command may sounds a bit harsh, agree. I have no problems with any sponsorship from any company, it is part of the game I totally accept. Huawei is for me and most of us an unknown brand, people does not even know how to pronounce the name. At one point the Wawei bosses must have a board meeting and thought how do we get our brand name out to the world? And decided to pump a few millions in the next years in the most popular sports world wide, football. I give them credit to doing a decent job with promotions and the NZ guy seems happy to hang out with the team. It's all good.

My point was more that people get pissed and all emotional by some Nix Hobbit promotion which is totally fine. The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings are on of the biggest NZ brands in the world, and there is nothing to be ashamed of, deal with it.

Surely the biggest NZ brands are the All Blacks, Lorde and Team New Zealand - Maybe they can sponsor us?

Sorry to contradict you but globally the All Blacks and Team NZ are very very minor players. When you live off shore you quickly realise that 99.99999% of the planet has never heard of the All Blacks or Team NZ.  They represent  very minor, white Anglo sports.

In contrast there are many millions of people worldwide who would know of NZ through the LOTR series.....millions would know of Lorde through her music after her world tour

Having spent the last 10 years in Europe I have heard many people talk about NZ from a LOTR perspective.......I have never heard Team NZ mentioned. The All Blacks......maybe once or twice from expat Anglo's. Recently I have seen Lorde posters in Paris and Berlin. After the 2010 WC in SA lots of people commented to me about NZ's good performance

I always find it hugely funny how kiwis think the All Blacks are a global brand. Its cringe making when our PM presents some overseas leader with a AB's jersey....they would have know idea what they were getting.....and its potentially culturally insensitive. Many Asian cultures see a black garment as a symbol of death

Give them a Nix or AW shirt....at least they would get that its football

Getting back to the game and sponsorship....I guess what we will see is Weiwei give up their logo on the front to the shirt and it will be replaced by an image of Bilbo Baggins and a Hobbit logo...or something. They could auction them for charity after.....they would be quite a unique item

This won't be happening, they have strict licensing restrictions that states that they can't sell them in any way.
