This was basically what I was trying to get across on the other forum. This is quoted from Fred Woodcocks opinon
"Of the dozens of players who have represented the Phoenix during the past six seasons, only defender Ben Sigmund immediately springs to mind as a Kiwi who has gone from relative obscurity to an accomplished professional under Herbert.
Others were either made before they reached Wellington or have gone on to other clubs and made a name for themselves"
Will a new coach start to look at the ASB premiership ma bit more? I would say unlikely if its a foreign coach.
Not fair at all IMHO. From memory Barbarouses played for Team Wellington before he stepped up to the Phoenix, later to excell at Brisbane. Without his stint in the ASBP would he have made it to the Nix? Rojas played for Waikato United in the ASBP as well before the YF got him on the Phoenix's books (in spite of Ricki), only to excell at MV under the same coach Barbarouses had at Brisbane. I'm sorry, both went from relative obscurity in NZ football to success in the A League. Brockie also resurrected his faltering A League career by going back to the ASBP and then got back in the A League. Now Fenton and Boyd have come up through the ranks, along with Hogg.
Hopefully the Phoenix's new coach will follow the ASBP closely for the best local talent. There are certainly players in it who are equal if not better than the likes of Smith, Lia, Downey, Tortori and Lochhead.
Perhaps if big ASBP games were televised then Phoenix staff could benefit in appraising local talent by watching replays.
