Speculation is the bread and butter of forums with "informed" (cough cough) opinion. And mine no less than any others. You could well be right Doloras. But I still don't think Welnix would have sacked him then and there, they would have left him in place until they had found a replacement.

Let me answer that rhetorical question with one of my own. Do you think third rate hacks like Reason and Telfer would be having a field day at the Nix's expense if Ricki had seen out the season? And - for the hard of reading comprehension - I wasn't a Ricki supporter, not after the WSW game. I just suggested that he wasn't the reason that we were sucking dead puppies through a straw, or at least not the only reason. And I think - despite the people who continue to blame Ricki after he's gone - I've been shown to be right.

Another point no-one's mentioned. Ricki took over the Knights with 5 matches to go. He leaves the Nix with 5 matches to go. Damn, that's eerie.

Oh, and just one more. Morrissey-with-a-cat-on-his-head thinks I've gone to la-la land because I think that the SACK RICKI crowd here actually played a part in getting their wish. I bring to your attention: 1) if Ricki *did* quit, it was surely due to pressure from media, owners, AND fans; 2) some posters here - inc. JD, if I remember right - were fond of saying that only fan pressure on these forums could convince the owners to make a change in ownership. So you really think that what you say here is of no real-world consequence? If so, why do you bother saying it?

Maybe he likes the fact he's coached a round number of seasons, rather than a partial season.

Haha! :-)

Telfer for one had started on the Phoenix before Ricki went so in his case yes.As for Reason think he probably would still have taken shots but just from an angle probably asking why Ricki was still there then citing examples from div 2 in Scotland of managers who had been sacked.

I just thought it seemed odd that he quits out of the blue but within less than a day they already seemed to have another job for him already lined up at the club - which to me seemed like an agreed compromise/face saver for him not that he showed up on Monday with hsi resignation letter in hand.

Anyway, none of that matters.  I'd just like the Phoenix to get a hold of the story!!  Old complaint, not that important

But didn't they always say they there was role for him in the club for the next 2 years regardless of whether he stayed as coach or not, Sounds like he negotiated that himself in his contract a long time back.

Left himself an option.

Can you hear yourself? Really? You really wrote this? Lord....

Reason and Telfar would kick a dead puppy for cryin out loud so you really have no point in that respect. Telfer is comparing the Phoenix to the Kingz and Knights so shows his reality. You really chose poor people to defend yourself with.

Steve-O thinks you've gone to la-la land cause your were calling for Sack Welnix. I tend to agree with him.

It does not take an Einstein to figure out the problem alone was not just Ricki. Change was needed purely for the sake of it. He was the person charged with fixing it so as a consequence, he was probably going to get the ass at the review anyway because the problem became so great that he was not the one to fix it and probably became part of it. You do not need foresight to pick that so I hardly call what you are saying all 'oracle' like and that you have been shown to be right.
You've been a Ricki supporter until about 3-4 weeks ago. What changed, figured out that it was time???? Wow.... Just like the rest of us.

Do you really think that Rob and co went 'well fuck me, JD, Steve-O and a couple of other lads want him gone, thats good enough for us.' The reality was, it was obvious to everyone that there needed to be a change - you changed your tune because..... it was obvious.. It would have come at the end of the season, instead Ricki was probably smart enough to see the writing on the wall and chose to leave. His call pure and simple.

And lastly, If JD says that Big Ben is going to fall over if he says it often enough, do you think it will happen? If you think the board of the Phoenix read this forum and are influenced by it, then we have far bigger problems than what is going on with the coach and team and we will be well fucked very soon.

I agree with Steve-O. Build a bridge Doloras and seriously get over it.

The announcement that he had resigned was pushed back more than once (originally supposed to be 5pm Mon and then early Tues) because talks of what role he would have at the club in the future were ongoing. It doesn't sound as though they had a role lined up for him, sitting there ready for him to take it, but that they had to have longer than expected discussions with him when Welnix found out he was resigning.

If he was resigning then he wouldn't want to stay on at the club in any shape imo. Seems like a definite push to me.

So what will Herbert's next move be?

We already know that he will retain some sort of link with the Phoenix as Technical Advisor to the Board.

It was also mentioned in Podcast v49 that he might coach the NZ U20s at the U20 WC.

This little gem of info was also contained in the recent Dom Post story about Ramon Tribulietx:

"The Phoenix face A-League competition in the coaching hunt with Adelaide United also looking for a new boss.

Adelaide have formed a special selection committee including former Socceroos Craig Foster, Alex Tobin and John Perin, while board member Bruno Marveggio did not discount chasing Herbert.

"It may be too early to talk about Ricki Herbert," Marveggio told The Advertiser newspaper.

"But it's all coming together with the committee. Once we reach a decision on exactly what we want and it's approved, then we'll start talking about coaches."

I think most people on here will probably ROFL at the idea of Ricki coaching Adelaide but I reckon it's not that ridiculous. Familiarity breeds contempt so we tend to discount the fact that Ricki is actually a highly experienced and knowledgable A-League coach. He might have run out of ideas and inspiration at the Nix but put him in a new environment and who knows? If not Adelaide I reckon he will turn up at another A-league club within a few years, perhaps when he is well clear of the All Whites.

Also, it would not surprise me at all to see Ricki coaching the Phoenix again at some time in the future. He is still relatively young and will always have strong ties back to the Nix and the A-league. Some time away may be all that is needed.

Burgess in the Herald confirms that I was wrong... that Ricki did jump, although Welnix did nothing to try to stop him. Which then opens me up for a rant on how I've lost all respect for Ricki, who should have stuck out the rest of the season instead of leaving Greeny to carry the can. But I don't want to argue any more.

Anyway, I really doubt Ricki will be back, because a soufflé doesn't rise twice. However, it's not inconceivable that Adelaide might take him on, and if he leads Adelaide to the Toilet Seat, that might cause a few reflective grimaces around here.

Doubt they would take him on while he is still involved with the AW's. And if he goes to another HAL club and does well, good on him. A change of scene can do wonders for both parties.

I don't know about you, but it makes me furious to watch Marco doing well at the Tards or Smeltzy for the Glory, and Ricki for the Pissants would be even worse.
