@queenofthequail It happens. This is a more unique situation; it’s not like someone who supported ManU under the Ferguson era switching to ManCity because they’re the ones buying the league and ManU are …manure.
It’s more like, you used travel across town because there was only one Bunnings around, now a new one has opened up round the corner, so you’re going to use that one now.
Doesn’t mean you need to go hating on WPX though.
Oh for sure. I think my post might have been a little misinterpreted. I'm not criticizing people who choose to support both teams. I'm more talking about those that go all "LOL sMaLL tEaM eNeRgY lOoK aT yEr CrOwD nUmBeRs We OwN tHe NiX LMAO" while still picking out yellow lint from their belly buttons.
I certainly don't have the time or money to head down to Welly every couple of weeks as much as I'd like to and so I did initially consider getting an AFC membership because of the proximity. Ultimately decided that I wouldn't commit to attending every home game for a team that is not "my" team so it wasn't worth it for me. I totally get that other people's attitudes and circumstances might be different and I'm cool with that.
I'm just not cool with the unnecessary Nix bashing. That's like your favourite band being from overseas - you can't attend their gigs but still love them. Then a local band pops up and you start seeing them every weekend cause they're there and all of a sudden the original band is shark and you're throwing out all their records?
Don't know. Maybe I'm being too tribalistic about a bunch of dudes kicking a ball around or maybe I'm in a foul mood cause I'm back in the office after a long weekend.
But has anyone 'jumped ship' and started bashing the Nix? I don't see any evidence of that.
From reading the AFC supporter FB groups, I think any 'hate' has come from folks who clearly have never liked the Phoenix. Like I doubt the now banned Port Soldier was ever a fan of NZ's first pro club.
Seen a few (presumably Auckland based) saying they have been Nix fans for awhile and now will support both NZ clubs, against Aussie teams. But they ain't the sort putting the boot into the Phoenix.
I am caught between a rock and a hard place on this.
Clashes with club cricket which I am honour bound to commit to. If it keeps raining, cricket will be cancelled which is good for me. But if it is raining, that will be a challenge to a good walk up and not good to the club.
I reckon the best is a nice day where the cricket match is one sided and over early. Failing that, the wife is away for the weekend, so I can record, go home and watch "live" probably with an Indian takeaway. All I would have to do is avoid the radio and tv news.

Reminds me of that sky ad from back in the day where the bloke tries to avoid the score all day only to find out in the fish and chip paper from his takeout order.
David Dome today said “I want all Wellingtonians to wear yellow, regardless of whether you have a Phoenix shirt or not, to show you’re backing the Nix on Saturday night.
“We need our city’s support more than ever. Our noisy neighbours, with their billionaire American owner, want to buy their way to an A-League title.
“They’ve used their millions to lure Alex Paulsen away from us and I’m sure it’ll just be the start, but it takes much more than money to be successful" New Zealand is yellow! - Wellington Phoenix.
What a load of rubbish from Dome. It’s a salary capped league, they have given contracts to quite a few Kiwi players who were overlooked by the Phoenix in the past, bought players like Dane Hall who was a Mariners player, given contracts to unproven players from South America and got a coach who was fired from Sydney FC. They will have their own academy soon, and if they end up winning a title before the Nix, then good on them.. ridiculous narrative.. if Bill Foley came to the Phoenix, none of here will say no, including Dome. And no, they didnt use millions to lure Paulsen away from us, you accepted those millions.. what they do with him is entirely their own business.. No wonder people think we are a small club, with a small club mindset that hasnt won anything in 17 years. I am not originally from NZ, so I am not sure if it's a NZ mentality thing.. but to me this reeks of a losing mentality, and as a fan of the club, I hate this and quite frankly, I think we have lost this before the ball is even kicked if thats the attitude the club ha

So, are you going to be wearing yellow on Saturday? I hope so.
Living in Melbourne, and organising a watch along in a local pub, certainly am Oi Oi Edgecumbe

FFS he is trying to talk it up what dont you get about that. Love that he has brought up Paulsen sorry if you dont think what happened with him was wrong not sure what can be said. Yes the Phoenix accepted money for him but to have him announced as an AFC player before the appropriate rule has been approved is just wrong. Nothing wrong with the mentality of it as i said he is talking up the derby guess you didnt like the fly bye or the billboard either.
The idea of the flyby was good. The execution of the message was a bit meh
There is a difference between talking up the derby and spinning BS
Na one and the same when your trying to get bums on seats this game could go a long way to paying for the Nixs season if we can get a good crowd. Reckon thats all Domey is trying to do.
There’s obviously no bad blood from Dome, he’s clearly just trying to overplay the almost non-existent (at this point) rivalry to get people along to the game. Let’s not forget it was a poor showing from the crowd in round 1. They need to be turning a profit.
I'm hearing the Port plan on marching to the game at 3:15. Seems a tad early but at least their march won't clash with ours I guess. My only question is how many will actually march?

Yeah, they have moved their pub from the Thistle to Sheppards Arm up in Tinakori Road. Thistle was always going to be too small but that does mean a long match for them to the game. They are planning to be in by 4pm, so will be a long time at the stadium beforehand too.
I know they were trying to drop hints that there would be 500 coming, but looking at presale in the away area I'd say its closer to over 200 at the moment, maybe it'll get to 300. Which will still be our biggest away fans number we've had since WSW/RBB did a Tour of Duty to Wellington. 2024-10-30 12_35_10-Select Tickets _ Tickets for Sport, Concerts, Theatre, Arts, Family Events, Come.png73.66 KB Meanwhile, in the zone, 22 is sold out (2x wheelchair still available) and nearly all of 21.
Phoenix general manager David Dome might have ensured there will be some by invoking Paulsen’s transfer in a statement calling on fans to “turn the city yellow” on Tuesday night, decrying Auckland for “want(ing) to buy their way to an A-League title” and “(using) their millions to lure Alex Paulsen away from us,” a jab that ignores the fact that those millions were a blessing for cash-strapped Wellington.
For his part, as he looks forward to a match the Phoenix are hoping will attract a crowd in excess of 20,000, Paulsen says: “If I go down there, and it's a little bit different, it's fair play. At the same time, I know in the back of my mind who I am and I don't really need to justify it, if they give me a poor reception down there in Wellington.

Kind of agree with that. Competition that takes away a slice of your cake is a forbidden sin in NZ. It's like the supermarket mafia that we have here. Ripping off the locals whilst pretending they're doing us a favour with their ridiculous "deals." All happy as long as no competitor arrives.
Having said that, he's free to speak his mind of course and I wouldn't read too much into it. But the novelty of being the only pro club in the country was always going to go one day. So yea, AFC have the $$ now, the Nix have been doing well with their talent. But as with all things there's a food chain, and we might just be below AFC now. That's life, gotta deal with it.

They will be standing outside then given the stadium probably wont be open when they get there.

So what you're saying is they'll be able to take in actual views of the port then? 🤭

Brown said that WelNix aren't interested in other investment so they might well say no to Foley.
As far as the narrative, Dome is making the best out of the situation. Good on him.

except they had multiple offers, so the idea that AFC through them a life line is wrong. I also remember at the time them saying they picked a club that has a good development plan for Paulsen, that they'd tried to get him loaned back, and when asked about him returning to the A League cited the Caceres rule.
It's fairly clear that black knights football group wasn't 100% up front with their intentions so why not play it up and try and get in a big crowd?
Strange comparison considering that Trump would most likely glorify the billionaire rather than call him out, but OK.
Domey is clearly just trying to fire up fans for the derby, using narratives that already exist and people already have feelings about. Don't think it's any deeper than that.

Yeah I agree, and I think the Black Knight group weren't upfront with Paulsen either about where they intended to loan him - which is why I won't be booing I'm on Saturday as I think he was expecting a European loan and I don't think coming back to the A-League is where he really wanted to be this season.
Also I don't mind Dome's statements as it's clearly aimed at getting the casuals to care enough to show up and fill the Cake Tin - which is what we all want at the end of the day
The vitoral directed at the Auckland owners for some of their apparent stunts comments, and the defense of DOME.
Personally I haven't had a problem with anything - from the pitch invasion to this. Nothing has been said or done that I would consider dangerous or indefensible.
It will help generate buzz... which means everyone wins... let's be honest, arguably a little push and shove mid game would from an advertising perspective be brilliant!

There's a difference between trying to disrupt a game and a bit of banter outside of the match.

Cant agree big difference between an illegal pitch invasion and Domey coming out with statements designed to generate interest. With any luck might even make both news channels which has to be a win. I dont like pitch invasions of any sort and will always speak up against them.

Stadium won't open until 4pm. They might wish to revise their timing.
Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!
