I just realised: it's altogether possible that Ali Syed is linked to the underworld and he knows people and they tell him things. And by underworld I mean underseaworld. Yes, he sails the world in his submarine, looking for football teams to buy...

True.  But they look so cool parked at Kilbirnie Pak n Save.

IF I was a Peter Jackson or a Terry I'd have my own Stingray (of the WASP kind).  Might stretch to a Capt Scarlet car if I had to.

My other vehicle would be a UFO interceptor.

Would avoid all the traffic in the Ngauranga Gorge then.

Oh really? Try Shortland Street!  But back to the topic. I am a tad disappointed that no other major Wellington business players front up with a firm offer to help the Phoenix. I'm sure plenty of businesses have done nicely out of football in the capital.

I think I have to reiterate that the Nix loses a million bucks a year. Who loves Wellington football that much, apart from half-crazy dodgy Greeks?

To be honest, while Terry is involved it is unlikely many people with the Bucks would ever want to invest!

^ This.

I don't think that some people grasp that making a bid to get involved in the Phoenix may not be considered a particularly astsute move which displayed a massive amount of business acumen.

Can't really picture some Welllington business player fronting up to the Board and successfully pitching the idea of buying into something which loses a million bucks every year.

But what do I know!

Checking wikipedia, the first thing that Ali Syed did when he took over Racing was to fire the coach. So the "SACK RICKI" crowd might get their wish along with the "REPLACE TERRY" crowd. Be careful what you wish for.

Someone on the other thread was going on about some Kiwi who was willing to take over. I am going to assume he means Gareth Morgan. Screw that. Since when has that guy shown any interest in football?

Actually I have seen Gareth at several games albeit in the Deloitte lounge with his missus ,he even did a lap around the pitch before a game last season on his motorbike .
Lets face it his son Sam could buy the Phoenix with the small change in his back pocket if he had any desire to !

The Morgans are shrewd investors, only interested in making a buck.

I would find it very hard to even imagine them wanting to buy a business losing so much money with little or no chance of any return.

As for Racing, it smells like a smelly thing IMO.

You are talking about the sam Gareth Morgan who gave away the majority of his $30 million from trade me shares because he didn't need it?

And if it wasn't for stumping up money in the first place we would not be having this discussion. We have short memories sometimes.

I am not a desciple, but really, you could show some respect and a few others on here on how you refer to people. I've noticed some of the messages on this thread have more than a personal tone in them. It is distracting from the actual topic.

Don't think anybody's disputing what Terry has done, LG. Or his love for football and the Nix.

Point is, from a purely business point of view, what would you gain from buying an operation that ships around 1 million dollars every year?

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

It's confused. Terry was asked about the overseas investment office view of his sale in the Radio NZ interview, and he said it was a loan of $100m? So is CCF actually be part-sold?

Exactly and well said. Should also be noted that the losses would effectively be cash losses as the business has no assets to speak of which would account for the loss in terms of depreciation etc.

If the new co-owner has links to the underworld maybe we will sign Ljubo Milicevic?

Kevin Musc**t, Joey Barton, and Lee Bowyer... Vinnie Jones as S&C coach!

Not to mention almost any AFL player... Brendan Fev is looking for a new gig - would add some height to our defensive line

If the scale of your business operations is large, a million dollar loss is a handy "asset" to have when your businesses are astutely managed..or dodgyly manipulated..take your pick.
Tax write-offs, for a start, surely?

Being flippant now... Mr Ali Syed's company raised a few eyebrows when its capitalisation went from 53,000 Euros to 1.5 Billion Euros in a very short time.
Not sure of the origin of his money but will be interesting to see if the funds spike again as the Cricket World Cup unfolds in India. I mean, what about the underground economy that is sports betting in India and neighbouring countries..the money has to go somewhere!

There's no connection between the $100m loan that Terry is trying to get from Western Gulf Advisory to sort out his cashflow situation , and a potential "sale" of half the Phoenix to Ashan Ali Syed, except that the same personalities are involved. The Dom Post has just taken some liberties with their headline, as per usual.

The loan looks likely to go ahead and should allow Terry to sort out his financial issues. It's basically a debt consolidation, he will pay off a bunch of other debts and just owe one big debt to WAG. But that's got no direct connection to the possible half-sale of the Phoenix.

I dunno, it was serious question. I've never owned my own business, so the benefits are a mystery to me. In fact, apart from loving the game and the altruistic aspect, I find it mystifying why anybody would buy a football club anywhere, to be honest.

Glad they do, though

The Yellow(Fever) Submarine could be a whole new mode of Ownership transport....or a handy addition to the Yellow Fever transport fleet on our "Wind, Rain and Phoenix" home games!

edit: more could turn up for away games too!

But people do buy companies that are losing a million dollars a year and turn them around. I wouldn't rely on that being too much of a dominant factor. It would all depend on what price you could buy it for, how long you would take to get your investment back and start making money, what the A League plans are for making it more attractive to owners/investors and also a degree of wanting to own a professional sports team. Look no further than Eric Watson when he bought the Warriors. Napier Phoenix2011-02-22 12:45:35

When it comes down to it too....
I'd hate to think how many chickens had to die to get Blackburn Rovers where they are today.
AND  I can think of two fowls, recently departed ,  that a few in the Kop would have liked to have wrung the necks of..

Our A-League ownership activities have been relatively staid in comparison, but things may be looking up.  where's the fingers crossed emoticon when you need it?

Lots of people mention the $1,000,000 a year figure here, although we have no basis for that number other than occasional press comments by people in the club. However when commenting on the IRD action, Terry mentioned a figure of $400,000 a month.
One of the issues we have is that NZ has unusually lax financial reporting requirements for private companies, so we are really just speculating.

For what it's worth, withholding PAYE from employees wages and not passing it through to the IRD has a strong association with insolvency not just loss making. We also appear to have no information about how long that situation has been developing - did the tax stop getting paid 6 months, a year or whenever ago. It seems unlikely that any NZ business person would invest in a company in that position, whether Terry was still involved or not.

I am personally unconvinced that the deal with WGA will ever amount to anything, although that would be better than what happened to Portsmouth.

so, in my humble and ignorant opinion this might only be resolved by insolvency/administration so that an incoming owner would have fewer financial icebergs to worry about hanging over from the previous owners.
