Exactly - I mean how many people were in the Four Kings for the Newcastle game the other week?? 500 or so? Does that just register with Sky as '1' viewer???

Football is surely more of a 'watch in the pub' sport than the likes of netball, kayaking, golf etc so these viewing figures are somewhat inaccurate I would suggest.

I dunno. There must be a pub around with 500 packed in for a kayaking night, surely?
They could do a free pint offer if you wear your favourite kayakers wet suit or bring a paddle.

haha good call sir!

Yeah the sh*t Creek Hotel! Just don't show up without a paddle!

should really be on SS3.  Can't really complain about the other 3 except for the number of days between the game and the coverage.

I geuss at this point I am hanging out to see if they have changed their approach for next month. We have made our opinion very clear, and maybe they will have a slightly different plan to that which they had this month. If we are still in the same situation as this month, then I think we can start to kick up a bit of a stink again.

The "devil's advocates" are making out that A-League fans are being unreasonable.

What is unreasonable about expecting:

1. Sport to which Sky has acquired the rights (which effectively subscribers have already paid for) to be shown Live where possible

2. Live sport to be preferred to replays of shows that have aired previously

3. Where sport is not shown live, for it to be shown delayed at a reasonable hour and in a reasonable proximity to the live showing of that match so that the delayed coverage still has relevance to the match itself

None of that seems unreasonable to me.  In fact, if I was running a subscription television channel that's pretty much how I would aim to keep my customers happy - by following those fairly simple principles.

It is also worth noting that almost all other sports that Sky has the live rights to receive that treatment.  It is not unreasonable to expect equivalent treatment.

All of the rest (responsibilities to advertiers, viewing figures, duties to shareholders, customer service, whether we have locally produced football coverage, identity of commentators, Premier League vs A-League) is all just background noise to these key issues.
If you ran a tv channel you would be bankrupt in a year week. keep the customers happy?. what do you think they are doing? they cant please everyone, so the minority (a-league fans)gets shafted in favor of the majority. you guys are
 in such denial its scary.
Does anyone honestly believe they didnt calculate this pros/cons of full A- league ccoverage?

Most of you seem to have no idea what it is you are asking for, you just want what you want and dont care about how it gets done, stuff the advertisers, stuff the sponsors, stuff the other sports.
youre all acting like f**king children who have been told they cant have any loliies before bedtime.
you all need a god damn time out.

I'm sorry but you're way out on your own here.

Firstly, why does the broadcasting of every other major sport treated as set out above and the A-League is not?  If that approach is going to send Sky bankrupt then they would be long ago.  All I am asking is that those principles, which is basically how coverage of all other sport is run, be extended to the A-League.

Scondly, you seem obsessed that Sky's prior commitment to replay shows in preference to live A-League to be based on adherence to advertising.  That makes no sense when Sky's business model is based around acquiring new subscribers (this is well documented, check the Annual Report at the Registrar of Companies).

Advertising makes up very little of its income.  For example, I've seen the contract that Strategic Finance had with Sky to sponsor its golf coverage.  That means that every golf show has an intro with Strategic Finance (I'm sure you've seen/ remember it), it is advertised at every ad break, the Golf Show that Philip Leishman is also sponsored by strategic finance etc etc.  For that they pay around NZD100k per year, despite this being a headline slot.  Compare that with Sky's annual income and you'll soon work out that it is small bickies when compared to subscription income

I can't believe that Sky uses the excuse that non Phoenix games don't rate....that may have been the case in past seasons but this season is different. We now have more kiwis playing throughout the league....Smeltz, Moss, McClinchy,.

A poll done earlier this year showed that 37% of kiwis said they were interested or very interested in football......thats around 1.5million people. Does Sky not get it into their thick heads that quite a few of these football fans would like to see live, Shane Smeltz wacking in goals for GC. Or see how Moss is going at Melbourne or now that he is an AW, how mcClinchy goes at CCM.

Like I said this season is different...I know lots of people gutted at not being able to watch Smeltz  live. For lots of kids he's their one true kiwi football hero, and they can't see him play.
The programmers at Sky don't seem to get it!!!

Same with Robbie Fowler.
A lot of people would have grown up with his name and idolized him.
Surely just the Name, Robbie Fowler would attract more viewers.

Its like david Beckham.
They may not know anything about football, but they know the name.
I know a few people who didnt understand the game but went to the Phoenix v. Galaxy game just so they could say they watched "One of the greatest" footballers in the world.

Its the same with Fowler.
A courier at work today said that he watched the Phoenix game, but was disappointed that he was unable to see the GCU North Qld game to see Fowler and Smeltz.
And the courier is extremely into rugby. doesnt know the rules of football, but knew the names.Stefan2009-08-19 22:56:03

um, no.
you might be thinking of ING?
I work in the same office space as the one of the bosses of strategic and they said they sponsored the tv coverage with sky of some national golf tournaments but thats it. They are also not happy about you disclosing the contract information to the public.

I think the point im trying to make, but you seem to ignore isnt so much the finacial aspect of the advertising or the revenue from the sponsorship. its more to do with honoring thier obligations to those advertisers. you cant pull the plug on something somebody paid for, without thier consent, regardless of how much they paid or the content of the show they are advertising.
ive said it once, and ill say it again, wait untill next month when they can schedule all the coverage in, and it will be sweet.

I've heard, from a good source, that because of the economic downturn, Sky is shedding  subscribers at a frightening - for them - rate.

Anyone have the figures?

Fact is that Sky NZ is pretty poor for the money.

The choice of channels isn't great and there have been a number of times I have flicked through and not really found anything decent to watch on the entire thing!

I would get the movies but it seems that they just repeat everything constantly.

Too many repeats on the Sports channels as well, as previously discussed.

I emailed the FFA and here is their response.

We are in continued negotiations with Sky to have more Hyundai A-League games televised in NZ. We understand Hyundai A-League fans, like yourself, are keen to watch more games live and in their entirety and will continue to work and promote the game both in Australia and abroad.

I will pass on your concerns to our broadcasting rights team.

Well at least that's something.

Better than the deafening silence from Sky!!

Maybe it's because their 1 football staff member is dealing with the FFA they can't answer our e-mails as well...

Sky clearly don't have a clue. Im just looking on their scheldule today and they have premier league world and premier league highlights on at the same time on different channels. Its things like these and playing non-live sport over A-league matches that annoys me

Premier League World and the likes is a load of garbage as well. I like watching the EPL as much as the next person but this type of show is unnecessary IMO.

Shocking really.

Going to be hard to knock out Live Ashes and NZ International Cricket, Live NRL, Live NZ International Basketball and Motorsport.  All top ranking fan sports in NZ or marque games (the basketball).  You'd have thought Toyota Cup would rank lower tho'
Sky needs a dedicated Footy channel - yeh right
you'd think that they could find better replay times tho'

A mate of mine just got back from Gold Coast and watched Fox Sports, which owns Sky in NZ. He is a huge Tottenham fan, so is a long suffering football fan but he was blown away by the better coverage Fox give the Australians. He talked about an hour show on the Lower leagues which is shown, and being a fan of a a lower league side, just seems like another one of those programmes which we are missing out on. There are half a million Brits here now, and half of those would follow a lower league side. And unlke the ad about Super, Brits don't swap the round ball for the oval ball when they emigrate. The oval ball is a symbol of priveleged upper class twits in the UK.

Are you sure about that?

If Fox did own Sky, we'd all be petitioning Sky's Australian owners, telling them what a cr*p job their NZ division is doing with the A-League.

And would they give their Kiwi employees a good spanking, or ask YF and we would provide hundreds of willing volunteers to do the spanking for them.

I think Fox Sports in OZ is a subsidiary of News Limited.
News Limited, through another subsidiary, have the biggest share(44%)of Sky Tv in NZ.

Which is great, actually, because once we have our Wellington Phoenix banner sorted we could keep contributing money and, before you know it,YF could buy the other 56% of SkyTV off the rest of those shareholders, take over the Board and run Sky TV the way it should be run!..

Headline figure is publicly available if you know where to look, no breach of confidence here.

Ask anyone who's watched a lot of golf (I had an obsessed flatmate, I've watched hours of the stuff) and they will tell you that strategic were headline golf sponsors for about 5 years.  The contract may have expired, I've been away 2 years now

I really do think you've got this all the wrong way around ubergunner, you're saying that sky can't interrupt its schedule to replay A-League games but are you seriously suggesting that the schedule is so tight that they can't find a slot until 5 days later, when we all know that the print version of the sky guide is usually out of date two weeks after it is printed?

Guess we'll all be proved right or wrong next month.
