I feel I have to weigh in...

Originally I thought, ah well, I don't usually get to watch the other matches so not fussed they're not on live, but tonight, taking it easy at home I thought I'd flick it over for the Adelaide Perth game.  But hang on... AFL is on. f**king AFL. Are you kidding me?!

I pay a fair subscription to sky, and now I have to use up my modest broadband allowance on LIVE football.  For a competition in which a New Zealand team competes in.  It is absolutely ridiculous.

Now I don't know anything about how the rights to these games go, but surely it doesn't cost Sky much extra to have the other A-League games on live.  I mean, it must be a marginal difference between having those two or three games they're currently having to having all five.

And while they may have some half assed rating figures to prrove their decision, how do you measure the intangible value of increasing interest in the whole league, which could result in more subscriptions for them, or more viewers of the Phoenix games and hence more money.

Smacks to me of corporate favouritism, as in whoever runs the show doesn't want it so it doesn't happen.  Much like a high level GM or whatever in a Private company interested in a certain sport means the company is more likely to sponsor that chosen sport.

AFL?!

Fair dues guys, there's probably 100 avid AFL fans in NZ and Sky have made it obvious that 200,000+ football participants are not a priority sport. I am not suggesting 200,000+ will watch every game but i bet there's more football fans around than AFL.

I also noticed Sky contradicted themselves by showing two live rugby games on on Sky sports 1 & 2 (I dont have the rugby channel so i dont know what was on there). How are avid rugby followers going to watch two channels at the same time "Live"?? Picture in picture??

The Southland Otago game was on Rugby Channel.  But thats not quite the right comparison as it's not for a rugby follower to watch both.  It's for a follower to choose.  For example last week I watched the Northland game at 7:30, while I'm sure a lot more were watching the Wellington Otago game on SS1 & Rugby Channel.

When watching on the net, how byte hungary is it??

Last nights game on iraqgoals took up 450mb.  This included bit of pre match and half time.  I would describe the quality as equivalent to tvnz ondemand on high quality setting.  I was able to go full screen and be happy with the quality of the picture from a couple of metres away.  This is using telstraclear's inhome service with a 10mbs download speed.

Lets see...450mb x 3 games sky is too cool to show =1.3GB?

Multiplied by roughly 4 weekends a month...thats over half my internet plan...and im not the only one who uses it. Would have to upgrade to be able to safely watch A league.

Could always cut sky completely and up the internet to max,but then would miss out on other sport like the cricket.

f**k sky, surely they owe some sort of moral duty as the only major sports broadcaster in NZ to show as much live sport as they possibly can,and not just with an oval ball.

That's exactly what I did Tegal, ditched the Sky and ramped up the data cap.  Cricket is also easily accessible to stream as is almost anything else you want to see.  By ditching Sky I also ditched all access to TV1 etc because reception over an aerial where I am is poor.  I now download all tv.  The main site I use is thebox.bz which is a site for uk tv shows only.  This is very closely managed and content has a keen eye kept on it for quality etc.  Premier League games are on there, usually a few hours after they have been played, cricket, rugby, Match of the Day etc etc.  One of my Sunday routines last year was download Match of the Day, watch it at lunchtime and then head for the Phoenix.  And all of this is under my scheduling control, which with two little ones you need to have.  Sorry this has gone a bit off topic but hope it is of use.

Isn't it possible in the future that Sky either

A) Open up a new Sky Sports channel OR
B) Make the games avalible online (Like what TVNZ did for Olympics) with a good connection unlike iraqgoals?

What IF
sky used highlights channel as a highlights channel, except for when there was too much live sport on and then they put an extra live sport game on it. Thoughts?

Far too easy, this is Sky NZ you are talking about. The same people who put golf highlights on one of their main channels instead of live sport...

I have complained to sky... here is what I wrote to them ....

"I think that showing Golf HIGHLIGHTS!!! over the live Brisbane Roar vs Gold Coast United game on Channel 32 tonight is disgracefuly. You really need to get your priorities sorted.
I understand if we had other live sport on channel 32...e.g. AFL etc. But Golf Highlights is just plain insulting to your paying customers.
This is very disappointing, especially for me and my family who have been Sky Subscribers for 17 years straight!"

I say tackle him in the face.

we need another provider other than sky in this country!!!! I know we're small but there is room for another provider.. perhaps foxtel could move in. just like all the other oz companies... even just for sports.

once the country goes entirely digital with its tv services and the broadband infastructure in NZ improves you will probably see better content on the subscriber services otherwise the networks will lose out to the improving quality of live streamed (pirated) broadcasts

If someone at sky was reading this (-highly unlikely), they should have an idea that things are heading this way now.

I have now watched 2 games online, and altho it gets the job done of me watching football, it just wasn't the same.  Perhaps another thoughtful chat between CEOs could help....  Thanks TonyP, I saw that you were watching it online last night too!

Excellent job - I think I used the word disgrace as well. Today I might follow up with a real letter as well - you know the sort you write on paper.

Saw this on the Herald Website this morning...

CYBER-BULLIES'

Sky Television chief executive John Fellet says he is not concerned about websites that include virulent attacks against Sky sports coverage and put the blame squarely on him.

He describes the site, which looks at the resources Sky puts into its high-definition broadcasts for some sports events, as cyber-bullying.

Anti-media sites are common enough - there is even one devoted to this paper - but www.johnfellet.com does have an edge to it.

I'd be happy to have a chat to organisers about gripes - under its previous satellite arrangements Sky was sometimes mean with bandwidth. But aspects of this anonymous site do raise questions.

Might well be wrong but I'm sure they were showing the same thing (might have been some golf bollocks) on two different channels at the same time over the weekend.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

You are correct, Stevo. Can't stand golf. The pitch is too big and the goals are too small.

The feeling of urethane compressing solidly against the club face and watching the ball sail in its intended line is a feeling that cannot be described.
