That's been the Kiwi attitude problem which the Phoenix has had to cope with for years. Don't give a sharke how many NZers are in the Phoenix - just want to win the League. Big signing on its way.

for the love of all things holy. Please. Stop with the tantalising vagueness, WE WANT TO KNOW MORE

Could be a typo, and actually there is a big sign on its way, possibly a big one to advertise on a double decker bus.

Very tall then?

Hmmmm. I wonder how the size of our buses compare to the ones in South Korea?

So we're about to sign a Korean player called Park Se Bus?

FFA Cup results:

Cairns 1 Sydney FC 2; Apia Leichhardt 3 Melbourne Victory 2

Reckon Rudan should concentrate on stand-out players in the NPLs, and pick on merit, not nationality.

He just said players from semi-pro environments take time to step up. Where do you think NZ Premiership stands in relation to NPL in NSW, VIC, QLD, SA, WA?

NSWPL and VPL clearly better. Others, not so much.

Hmm. Sydney came from a goal behind to get past mid table QLD NPL team Cairns last night, so maybe QLD ain’t half bad either.

But we’re taljing on field standards, not financial performance. NZ teams have issues there too.

But the two can be closely related. I mean, isn't it a big reason why the standard in Handy Prem is what it is?

Besides, it's one game. It would be pretty brave to draw an overall conclusion on the strength of any given competition based on that kind of sample.

Its odd but maybe there is missing bridge between the Phoenix and kiwi players, these guys are getting signed around the world.

We've been through this before. The twin problems are:

a) as Rudan alludes to, our "shamateur" system means people are on good coin for playing National or top-level regional leagues and have no incentive to trial professionally;

b) many people in NZ Football just don't like the Phoenix and don't want to play for us because they think we suck as a club, we've got a bad culture, and we're going to be finished in 2 years anyway. You saw Cole Peverley slagging the Nix on Twitter, we know what Declan Edge thinks about it.

That is kinda disappointing if De Jong has missed out, he seems to be doing very well in the NSW NPL.

If we don't sign de Jong I'd like a good explanation...depending of course on the make up of the final squad

I'd hazard a guess that he wasn't signed because he didn't impress the Coach and wasn't what the Coach thought was required. Glad I could help.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

He also plays in a position where we have some depth... was he going to add value, was he likely to push for a start. Probably not.

Doesn't mean he isn't a good player, just not what we need at the club currently. If Singh leaves in a years time, maybe bring him in then.

there's no such thing as 'too slow' in the a-league. however, an explanation I would accept is that he is too slow to play as an attacking whippet in semi-wide areas, which seems to be what Rudan is after

hopefully he has a passport and he can find better employment elsewhere

We've got lots of not a striker. A striker or two with goal scoring record would be ok. A Kiwi and doing ok in the next level down. Wants to play.

But he is not a striker, he plays the advanced role in a diamond formation.

We need a striker who can play with his back to goal, this is not De Jong unfortunately.

Free agents and aging stars

Of these I'd say the only possible ones would be the last three mentioned, and as we're going for a striker then that leaves Anichebe

Edit: would still probably cost a lot though and has a terrible goal scoring record

Sux that so many decent kiwi players are restricted by single (nz only) passport status.

Perhaps our young Kiwis are getting more of a look in at overseas as the clubs they are going are more established, have more quality players on their books, aren't in need of immediate starting players and can afford to put some time into younger players to develop them in the long term.

Contrast that to the Nix who seem to most seasons be putting more time into or seem to be looking for immediate starters or at least players who would be challenging the match day squad right away.

The best of the Handa Prems from last year:

MVPs - Payne looked good in India. Rumoured to be unavailable for the Nix. Gulley didn't make it.

Semmy - PNG international, 23, 7 goals (and 28 MVP points) in 14 games last year.

Goals per game, at NZ top tier (e.g. Handa):

Tade - 0.7

Krishna - 0.64

Ifill (late career) - 0.51

Semmy - 0.5

Watson - 0.48

De Jong - 0.39

Mata - 0.32

Waine - 0/17
