I might have missed it in the pages of ufukers, but do the club has a date or timeline set out to get the new man (or women) in? Or is it one of those asap things, which is only asap once they find the right person?

End of May at the latest... would be quite happy for it to be announced a little earlier!

I'm hoping we'll announce the new coach before announcing the players we release

Permalink Permalink

I hope we confirm a manager sometime this week, A-League clubs are starting to announce the players that they are getting rid of, and the worth-while ones are already getting snapped up quickly by other clubs.

If we look for a manager from overseas, he will have two weeks and no competitive fixtures to play to see who's worth keeping from those whose contract is expiring, and which Aussie/Kiwi players are worth chasing. He'll have to rely on two weeks worth of research on the players.

The selection pool for a manager who's familiar with the A-League is a lot smaller, however, probably the best option since he'll have to make important decisions on replacing/keeping/letting go players.

Meanwhile, there is a list of players at the Nix who aren't quite sure whether they'll be employed or not in around two weeks time.

I'm starting to get nervous that the thorough search for a suitable manager may come back to haunt us. This off-season will be a long nail-biter.

I sincerely hope so but as they were appointed in the first place anything is possible

Probably this:

"I have been at Wellington for five years so changing environments and moving to a club that will not accept anything less than top results and playing finals football next year is something that has got me naturally excited."

Especially considering the Merrick association too, it makes it seem as if it is a shot at the club. Though how much of the blame for our early form is with Merrick and his lack of flexibility is interesting...

Certainly we were all happy with more width in our attack when D and G came in first.

We have been in the finals once in the last 5 years, where we were tepid. Yet Moss has been a senior player in that time and Merrick was the coach for a good proportion of it.

Time to say it: Ricki was a much more successful coach for us than Ernie, though Ernie's style was closer to what Welnix wanted. Judging it on how we say we are all judging it- finals appearances and successes- Ricki did much better than Ernie.

Ummm. What kind of statement is that. Lets go back 5 years for the Jets and their record is : 8th, 7th, 10th, 8th, 10th. ....that is in sequence from 2012/13 to 2016/17. In fact lets be even nicer to Mr Moss and we will give him two more years of Jets TOP TEN finishes with 7th and 7th for years 2010/11 to 2011/12.

The Phoenix record for the same period of 2012/13 to 2016/17 has been : 10th, 9th, 4th, 9th, 7th and for the extra two seasons of 2010/11 to 2011/12 Phoenix were; 6th and 4th.

Now lets award 1 point to teams finishing 10th, 2 pts to 9th, 3 pts to 8th etc etc. Now except for the year 2010/11 when there were 11 teams in the league all other years were 10 teams. so for year 2010/11 the points will go from 1 to 11 points for finishing in 1st place. No worries about that as neither team in question were able or have been able to achieve that.

So: Jets total points for 7 years = 20

Phoenix total points for 7 years =28

So if Mr Moss considers he has left a sinking ship then he must have just joined a club whose ship has already been hulled and is lying under the water.

  Best of luck with that.

As a regular starter for those 5 seasons (probably played more minutes for the Nix in that time than anyone else) Moss is at least partly responsible for the team's results too.... As is the coach he's about to join up with again.

I think everyone is reading too much into this. It's just press release garbage.

Irrespective of what Moss was angling at, it's a bit of a dick statement against your former club. I hope we smash 6 past him.

Particularly given our poor defensive record.  I was a fan of his but I am interested to see how we go with a different keeper, I think we need some changes at the back

Still with a new manager I hope the club adopt that mindset that I have been banging on about for so long - aim to be the best, number one, Numero Uno. and accept nothing less in attitude.  Not settling for a "I hope we will finish in the top 6", "6th place is cool" etc.

I want to be the best and in the best team. That is what our players should be aiming for and to be!

We're getting changes at the back, if the rumour of Lia to Jest is right.

But if it is:
1) this indicates that at least 2 senior Nix players like Ernie so much they're following him;
2) which might indicate that the squad was split between those willing to follow Ernie's game plan, and others;
3) which suggests factionalism in the squad which might not be over yet.

Plus, is dissatisfaction with Welnix another major factor in the Merrick camp jumping ship?

or simply that they didn't have an offer from the nix and took job security and certainty over their preferred place to work.

and getting Lia and Moss isn't being ambitious about finals football. It's being ambitious about getting into 7th.

Still it'll bring some bite to Jets games at the least!

You could just as easily say that having a sense of cohesion and team identity, and getting everyone to buy into your plan and work together, is a key part of being a successful coach. It would be rare to get 23 people together and not have some personality clashes and natural cliques emerge, but a good leader should be able to pull everyone together regardless.

Look at Chelsea last season and this season for an example of the difference a coach can make. Mourinho obviously had success the season before lost it, and Conte has managed to pull everyone back together with minimal changes to the squad. No doubt we are in a completely different context but there's no reason to think that a new coach couldn't pull us together.

Press release guff, as so many others have said.

EDIT: Though his fresh quotes to Newshub suggest the lack of any coaching progress did play a part.

Both players were going to be offered less money than their current contracts, why wouldn't they be looking round?  I think you're putting 2 and 2 together to get 5.

I think that the furious (well maybe not furious) activity within the A-league teams is hotting up. As usual we appear to be left at the starting gate and I fear that any decent players that might think about joining the Nix will be snapped up by others. I really hope that all this waiting for a manager is not going to bite us in the bum again and we dont have another season of playing catchup

Sounds interesting, the promotions from the 2nd division in Holland were with some big clubs so the guy must have something about him

Adelaide have also said the same thing, they're not hiring anyone until they sign a new manager.

All we're missing out on is a bit of journeyman shuffling and have two foreign spots available. I think we'll be fine.

Also, that article above paints Kalezic in a really good light. Has the potential to be a great move, and also a statement on our intentions.

We have had since Ernie "resigned" to find a new manager so you'd hope we are a reasonable way down the line...

Wasn't there a world wide search undertaken when we appointed Greenie and Buckingham?
