At the final whistle I felt somewhat discouraged.

Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

Yesterday was woeful but I dont think it's the end of the world, just yet.

Durante and North looks like it'll be a great central defensive partnership for us., and Manny is doing a grand job in midfield.

Siggy? Love you man, but you aint a fullback.

Lochhead must be walking through the door of the Last Chance saloon. He was a nightmare yesterday. Problem there is that we're not exactly weighed down with options at full back.

Bertos. I thought he was pretty close to dreadful yesterday. Again. If my wide midfield players are one v one with a defender, with 30 yards of space to attack behind that defender, I want them running at full backs. What I don't want is ambling towards the byeline, doing 12 stepovers then smashing the ball off the defender's arse. Or slowing up the attack then turning the ball back in field or giving it backwards. We used to have a fat waste of space who couldn't get a cross past the first defender, we don't want another one. Frustrating, because he shows a glimpse every now and again of what he's capable of.

Paul Ifill. Everybody knows you're better than this, mate. Maybe it's time to start showing it again. You don't always have to do it all by yourself.

Onwards and upwards. Back on the rails this week with 3 points.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

Totally agree with these sentiments, every player in the Nix squad needs to take a good hard look in the dressing room mirror.

We need this team in Wellington, Terry has not put his money on the line for this crap.

I did not buy my season ticket for this crap either. I will still be there on Friday but I am afraid not everyone will be like me the floating supporters will be having a field day.

A very good win on Friday is needed absolutely, hopefully during the next couple of days somebody will sit down with the players and lay it on the line that what happened yesterday is not acceptable.

I agree with most of the sentiments on here....especially about our midfielders, normally I'm a staunch Tim supporter, but he and hismates in the midfield need to pull finger....(I'm excluding manny from this group, cos he seems to be the only one actully putting in any effort). whether its a hangover from the world cup or something else, Bertos, Brown, lia and Daniel need to pull finger and make dominate teams like they were end of last season. Bertos appears to me to get lazy in the second half and go missing, Tim hasn't really struck any form yet, lia - ha been poor, Daniel hasn't really been given much chances - when he comes on he's ok, needs to start IMO. Ifill is stuggling with being double teamed, but in theory this should release one of the other mids to do some damage, they are not helping him out at all.

As posted in off topic.  So much angst so early on in the season.

I think Jag was putting things in perspective with his opening and closing remarks.

uhfan - forget about the floating supporters, let's get behind the lads this Friday and make as much noise for as long as the travelling YF did last night.

man, we need to learn how to cross! I personally blame blockhead, as he did his usual idiotic ballwatching, causing us to concede. Ward was good so I'll let him off with giving away the 2nd goal

Agree with your setiments too junior82 I to am an ardent supporter like you.

Yes it is early in the season agreed but still after yesterday a reminder to the players of what it is about doesnt go astray.

I will certainly be there on Friday and beyond. I am aware there is a long way to go this season, but I think a lot of the angst in this thread is more disappointment rather than anger, cos thats the way I feel too.

Probably that is the way the players are feeling to hopefully they all learn from that.

Ive waited a long time to see proffesional football in NZ such as we have with the Nix.

Purhaps I'm being mellow dramatic but thats all part of my disappointment from yesterday.

When Ifill is constantly hemmed in by three or so opp players surely space has been created elsewhere.Maybe he needs to dummy run a few lines in front of their defenders to drag them in.Or something

Omg did you see how bad his ball watching was when they hit the bar for  what should have been their 2nd. three of our players went near post/pen spot. leaving a man by himself at the far post.

disappointing game, really expecting us to do way better than that. Especially after the match against victory. Bah, well this week am looking forward to an easy 3 points to be honest. Don't let me down!

We will never fully decide who has won the football.

Heart are the worst side in the competition and they beat us, I wouldn't be talking so arrogantly about the Fury to be honest.

What formation did we use last night?  The pre-match formation was hopelessly wrong (had Locchead as RM!) so I'm not going to go by that.  If we do a 3 man defence it has to be Siggy in the middle with North on the right and Durante on the left.  Siggy isn't a fullback as has been said.  Somebody quick on the wings to get back and turn the 3 man defence into a 5 man defence, so Hearfield, despite being terrible, could get the nod.  Or Bertos and Daniel.

Tempted to suggest Ifill start on the bench this week.  Been too fat and lazy for too long.  Would give him the wake-up call he needs and show him he isn't guaranteed a place.

When's Pavlovic back?  Game after the Fury one?

I missed the game. I've seen highlights that wern't flattering. But lads, come on! They may have had a shocker, but Man-Yoo still loose to minnows, Chelsea get shocked but midtable maggots, Arsenal fall to those more bruttish, and Liverpool still get their LOL on.

Lets take stock, move on, and fire up for FF! Bring. It. On!

I think we looked tired and lacked any spark in midfield. Ward has made a huge difference but in my opinion against the Heart I thought we needed a creative player coming off the bench. Forgive me if I'm wrong but wasn't that why we flew Toto over here, trialled him, signed him and pay his wages?

Pretty disappointing trip all round. Wed arvo flight delayed out of Welly and what with taking wife & craggy child to hotel and making mad dash to AAMI, somehow beating the traffic jam for the Metallica gig at the Rod Laver Arena, made it in time for 2nd half. Victory poor - us not much better. Wife and wee child made it to Heart match, wee fulla made new friends with the Melbourne police - tried to nick a copper's pen - but the chanting was a bit too loud for his tender ears, either that or he was voicing his dissatisfaction with an abject performance from the Phoenix. Our attacking third was bereft of ideas and our inability to produce some quality where it counts left me kicking the seats in disgust. A long way to go for one point - at least the travelling support did the team proud, if only the team shared the same passion .... HeySeus2010-09-20 17:26:03

Can someone tell me what is really going on with Toto - looked like a guy who could change a game pre season. Presume there's something goin on we don't know about, or hasn't got the defensive track back side to his game that Herbert wants.
Without Pav at least on the bench, there's no-one who can genuinely change a game, not right now anyway.
Man these guys are losing a great opportunity. They'd be 10,000 minimum every home game if they could back up a couple of home wins, with an away win. This city is really up for it, and whether Herbert likes it or not - they'll portion their entertainment spend on results. No-one's gonna pay to watch crap like last night. Money is tight out there still, though obviously not for some of the passionless individuals who started last night.
Playing catchup in the last third of the season isn't gonna work again either. Something not right again somewhere here.

What does Greenacre offer?  He's scuffed two shots in two games.  Potentially 4 points down the gurgler.  In general, I think teams have got us figured out in our endless pursuit to play wide football.  Without a strong, domineering target man in the middle, they can now afford to double up on the likes of Ifill and Bertos.

I'd drop Greenacre, put Ifill into striker, put Pavlovic on from the start to assist him, start going more central than wide, and I'd look to find any way possible to replace Lochhead who is a chronic generator of cheap turnover ball for the opposition.

Maybe Toto is TOO creative, we seem to prefer just cramming our midfield with 'workhorses'.

Maybe what he needs, but he's been training with the Phoenix already and Ricki doesn't want him. If he can't crack the squad, don't know how he'd make a huge impact?

Greeny would offer alot more if we didn't use him as our target man.

arrrhhhhhh, jesus - not this sh*t again.

Target Man is not a real position.  Every striker is expected to be able to hold the ball up when it is knocked into them, and occassionally battle for balls in the air.  Agbonlahor, who is about as picture perfect as it gets of a modern day striker playing on the last defender's shoulder trying to use his pace to get in behind them still does those ugly parts of the game well because it is part of the job.  That does not mean he is a target man (cause there is no such position).

Ricki does not say to Greenacre before the game that he is a target man (cause there is no such position) and if he is getting balls knocked up to his head it is the lack of quality we have further down the pitch that is the reason for that.

Football Manager has created positions like AMC and Target Man that do not exist.

I think we should try Greenacre and Pavlovic up there. Pavlovic looks like he has the ability to bulldoze his way through and if he can get into the box and set up real chances for Greenacre, then we might see some goals. The way things are going now though, Greenacre will be lucky to hit double figures this season, very lucky at that.

There is such thing as lone striker though, isn't there? Same sh*t. That is what we seem to be playing most of the time though it could be argued Ifill is a striker because barely ever tracks back

Fact remains that it's usually Greenacre doing that kind of work when he obviously wont win much in the air

Gotta say I think Greenie will be looking over his shoulder when Pavlova gets back - been impressed with him but not sure how he'll go startingvaleo2010-09-20 22:28:42
