Would rather have him than Brockie.

agreed, at least he put in some effort for 90 minutes, Brockie seems to require the perfect ball before he'll even consider moving.

Heard he's actually lost some size since the Liverpool days, scary thought! Still a monster!

Just found it interesting looking at our distribution between the two games. The CCM game coming not long after GM made his comments on the playing style the club wish to adopt.

That is some pretty freaking cool info, nice one bro. Gonna have to have a close look through it on the site!

didn't mind it to be honest- result.

actually wasn't a fan of Cernak- didn't think him coming on added anything that Huysegems wouldn't have.

interesting midfield. Think Louis is better on the wing- but having said that being in the centre may allow him more of a Tim Brown getting into the box late role. interesting system. Was Lia injured or just turfed?

Lia was suspended bro, yellow accumulation. Yeah Fenton on the wing for me, can/should still make runs into the box when it's coming from the other side.

Yeh I think Fenton was better than Lia there, but we did miss him on the wing.

Put Brockie on the wing, Louis through the middle and Stein and Boyd up front with Boyd sitting a bit deeper. Boyd tackles like Lia anyway. If he gets a yellow sub him straight away! Hmm may have 12 players on the park in this line up.

Haha reffing is such a high quality that it might work! The classic 4-4-3. Wanna see Cernak some more, I think he's going to contribute well for us but not a hundy on him yet. Would have been interesting (someone mentioned this earlier?) if Stein had have been on the field at the time as he will make runs and Brockie only really wants to score wonder goals it seems.

Check out this update of the passing graph. Sunday was just about our worst passing game of the season.

Pretty clear that we have now kicked the passing experiment into touch and have reverted to what we know and love.

I've also added points gained this time, which is really interesting, because there doesn't seem to be any correlation at all between the style played and the points gained. We seem to have gained about as many points trying to pass a lot as when we haven't.

My conclusion? This whole debate about playing style is just a waste of fucking time. I'm gonna go and watch the Fresh Prince box set again.

fenton must be the new brown.

scores a goal from midfield before lia or smith this season but isnt given any credit for his hard work tracking players and playing intelligently

I noticed that too, before I read your comment. Guess the only justification for passing the ball around a lot is to keep the fans who know nothing about football happy when they see that we had 60% possesion for the game.

+1

I think he's got a bit of a Tim Brown attitude too- hard working team man. But he's quicker, more skillful with the ball at his feet, able to play in more positions and the one real positive of this season so far. Is he as fit as Brown do you think? And hows that shoulder?

The reason for passing the ball around is NOT to keep the fans happy, it is to stop the opposition getting it and scoring.
If we have the ball then they can't score. Pretty simple.

Looking at that Graph, I actually do see a correlation between passes attempted and points picked up.. Less passes the more points. Looking at beginning of season and the last game. Least amount of passes but most points.

Did anyone listen to Michael Utting on radio sport.  He reckons Paston doesn't have enough mongrel.

I think he is right. Most other keepers in the league would have punched Heskey if they weren't going to be able to punch the ball.

Pasty is well known to be Not An Insane Person, unlike most goalkeepers, so this flaw of his is well known.

I agree, I think the stats is a waste of time too.

I have no idea what instructions are given to the team, but there is nothing wrong with long balls, provided they are accurate. There were some great long balls played yesterday (ifill and sigmund in particular).  Pissing about playing lots of 10yd passes in front of your own goalie doesnt achieve anything, especially if you end up passing it back so Paston can hoof it skywards anyway. Long balls can force the other team well back into their own half, and with accurate long balls you can wing corners and throw ins at the very least.

This argument about style - if an opposition knows how you are gonna play, then they are going to be able to suss you out. Surely you have to be able to mix it up and allow the players to decide whats best. Some of these A-League attackers are putting a lot of pressure on defenders with the ball just outside their own penalty box - in which case its best to by-pass the oncoming rushers with an accurate long ball.

not gonna start a rant about it - but thought it was sad that the most successful chants were cat or gareth related rather than football. Sad that the whole crowd got standing chanting stand up if you love your cat - cant we change that to stand up if you love Muscat?

Also we seem to slip and slide an awful lot regardless of whether dura has even done anything - not necessarily a bad thing though I guess

there is simply no way I am ever going to stand up for a cat

on topic ...
I lik fenton central
he has been struggling to beat the faster players
so i think his future lies more centrally
good workrate
has a sniff for opportunities
and defends as well as he gets forward

A pretty cool stat is that in his 80 games in the A-League, Pasty has never received a yellow or red card. He's the player with the most appearances in the entire league without being booked.

Another stat is that this season is the most appearances he has made in one season. I think his previous record was 15.
