Sydney coach Vitezslav Lavicka lay down the law at training during the week, pushing his players to snap the lethargy that has led to a bad habit of conceding the opening goal.
Durante took a brief spell from his duties in New Zealand to sign with the Sky Blues for their Asian Champions League campaign, giving him a unique insight into how Lavicka works. As such, he knows the Czech will have his side primed to come out breathing fire.
''They'll be full of confidence coming here but equally, they'll be hurting after what happened against Central Coast, a game they would have hated losing,'' he said. ''There was some talk early in the season that they were struggling but they've hit their straps now; just look at how they've made all those comebacks in recent weeks.
''They'll be desperate to get back on the winners' list, and we'll have to be on our guard. It's going to be a tough game because we'll be just as keen as they are.''
Sydney crashed out at the group stages in the ACL, but they've bounced back to be third after seven rounds in the A-League and appear on track to make the finals. In contrast, Durante's Phoenix have battled to just one win, leaving them one point above last-placed Gold Coast.
''We started off well enough with a win and a draw but we let ourselves down badly with a few home losses in a row and it's really hurt us,'' he said. ''We've been our own worst enemy at times, and when you throw in some injuries and suspensions, it's really hindered us. Thankfully we're slowly getting a few of them back, and as we get the numbers, I'm sure we'll grow in confidence and start to get a few more points than we have been.''
The Phoenix went into their last match in Wellington against the Mariners with just 15 fit men, and Durante admitted the absence of numbers had cruelled the team's hopes of a flying start.
''We lost Mirjan Pavlovic and Lucas Pantelis before a ball was even kicked, and then lost Vince Lia and Paul Ifill in the first game - that's four important players robbed from our squad,'' he said. ''We've been forced into doing things we wouldn't usually. Players carrying knocks and injuries have forced themselves to play, blokes have been playing out of position and it's been a real patch-up job. All things considered, it probably hasn't been too bad.''
All the bumps and bruises are nothing compared with the psychological damage inflicted by an off-season when the club's future was in doubt when owner Terry Serepisos was forced to pull out.
''The transition from Terry to the new owners was a difficult time because, for a time, we didn't know what was going on,'' he said.
''We were all constantly asking questions, and not getting any answers. We went to the PFA [Professional Footballers Australia], the FFA, the club, everyone, and none of us had any idea whether the club would be around.
''But that's all behind us now, we've got owners who are financially very stable and who have great visions on where the club is going to head in the next few years.''
Despite pulling a crowd of 20,000-plus in Auckland last week, they only drew a quarter of that in Wellington against the Mariners, although Durante is confident the fans will come out for the family-friendly Sunday timeslot.
''Playing on a Friday night in bad conditions was never going to suit our fans, who have always responded much better to Sunday afternoon games,'' he said. ''Hopefully with Sydney coming to town, they're a big team with big players and with us badly needing a win, the fans come out and support us.''
Durante said there was a small chance he could have made his Sydney stay permanent, but it didn't work out.
''There was some talk between myself and the coach but I was still under contract at Wellington, and it never really went further,'' he said. ''I didn't play as much as I'd wanted in the ACL, and when I did, it was at right-back, so I wasn't too unhappy about going back to the Phoenix.''
