Warner vs Paston

Does anyone know why Warner is being preferred to Paston? I reckon Warner has been pretty ropey, he's slow, positionally inept and his distribution is awful, also he doesn't seem to have a sense of humour.

It's probably because Ricki has no faith in Kiwi players and prefers to rely on outsiders. Coincidentally, Ricki also has blind faith in Kiwi players like Brown and Bertos who should have been put out to pasture ages ago in favour of gun imports. In any case, sack Ricki, hire Ernie Merrick.

When has he been ropey? I think it is because Warner has yet to make many mistakes and Ricki never has liked dropping the incumbent. I remember him fumbling a couple but that is it. Warners distribution is OK, he does seem to lack about 10 meters on goal kicks but his throws are pretty good. It's a tough call on Paston and it sucks there is no reserve team but unless you are going to get a rookie there should always be genuine competition bewteen them.

Warner, his distribution is better, ok on the high ball, maybe not as agile as Paston, but to say a man who plays with another mans groin, hasn`t got a sense of humor is a down right insult.

There is a direct correlation between a keepers sense of humor and his keeping abilities. Fact.

Just what I was gonna say. That's why Mark "The Gagmeister" Paston has had such a stellar career. It's rumoured, if he hadn't made it as a keeper, he would have been a very good stand-up comedian.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

It is rumored that Paston is a bit of a freak in that he has 207 bones in his body. This is because he has not one,but two funny bones.

Mark Paston is so funny that his friends and team mates have to wear diapers whenever he is around.

Once we hit halfway through the season we'll be seeing more of Paston, he'll be requiring the game time for the WC qualifiers. Warner hasnt done too badly, i think Rickis just keeping him in and giving him game time knowing that he'll eventually be pulled and replaced with Paston who will see out the 2nd half or final 3rd of the season.

You guys need to remember that Ricki has to carefully manage this, being the AWs coach as well, and also the Moss situation

I agree that Pasty is undoubtedly being rested, rather than being dumped. Mossy is currently crocked, so if Pasty had played all season and was now clapped out, then, what, take Jacob Spoonley to the WC qualifiers?

Rumour is the nix are looking to sign Jimmy Carr as goalkeeping coach. The club says this is a big step forward as up until now Warner and Paston have had to just huddle around a laptop looking at average YouTube clips of stand up comedy during training.

"there's only so much video analysis can teach you" Warner was quoted as saying,in a far too serious a tone for a goalkeeper.

Rhys Darby would probably be a better choice as goalkeeping coach his positional acuity is superior to Jimmy Carrs

Warner organises his defence better.

I would agree that Tony definitely has a good relationship with the back 4 and he had a decent game last week but I think over a season Paston has to be given a chance as he has been consistent in the past

There is no way Warner organises the back four...for a start off he doesn't speak English! No one would understand a word he says.

From a staight footballing call there is not much between them. Paston is probably a bit quicker on his feet...Warner controls the air quite well. But Warner is no Vukovic or Reddy for that matter.

From a commercial marketing point of view not playing Paston is plain DUMB! Here you have probably  the most well known kiwi player at the Nix. The hero penalty saver from the Bahrain playoff, the guy who was argueably one of the best GK at the last WC. You are trying to build a commercial football club and attract casual sports people along  and you leave your most iconic kiwi player on the beach...and for a player who is no better in many peoples mind!!

So what you're saying is we should put Jimmy Carr in goal? Funny and commercially marketable.

Although yeah perhaps Rhys dharby as he is more marketable in nz,and just as funny.

Hope you're reading this ricki!

Leo Bertos is more funny than Rhys Darby.

(And taller than Dai Henwood)

That's where Ricki's going wrong. Get the marketing types to trawl round the malls in Wellington asking the casual sports fan which iconic Kiwi players should play every weekend.

I'm going to conduct some research tomorrow by asking some casual sports fans at work if they actually know the name of the iconic, most well known player at the Nix. I'll even throw in a clue about how he is a penalty saving hero. I suspect I know what the response will be.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

Tbh - he could have just been feeling Ifill up. What would you do in the same situation?

You are missing the point....this is meant to be a kiwi club for kiwi spectators. IMO when you have two players fighting for the same position and there is nothing much seperating them then the kiwi gets the position.

Paston is without doubt the most well know kiwi at the Nix. There are many Nix supporters and quite a few football journalists who do not understand why Paston is not playing. You want to bring people to the games...then field players that people can identify with.....not some noddy nobody that is not a better player.

I can't tell if you're being serious or not. You want to select the team based on how commercially marketable they are?!

So Paston should start because he is more recognisable than Warner?

I think it comes down to Rickis preference to use incumbents rather than making changes when the difference between two players is (arguably) negligible.

The kiwi club for kiwi spectators arguement is redundant in my mind. How did that work for the Kingz and the Knights? The saying "do we want a team full of kiwis or a team that can win?" comes to mind.

Pleasse tell me you aren't putting Paston in the same marketing bracket as a high profile (in these parts of the world, at least) former EPL player and an international mega-star?

No just giving credence to my assertion that players are picked for marketing reasons not just ability, the ransom I mentioned Beckham is watch out for who plays at the Olympics for Team GB to generate ticket sales (not because they are one of the best 3 overage players in GB)

Jake G is currently #3. Ps watch this space, very decent english clubs have been speaking to him.

2 players, one of which is an absolute one off, represents plenty of clubs? I love it that your comparing beckham to paston. Maybe i'll slap a bit of paston for men on before going to the pub tonight....

I think Oska was referring to the epicly repetitive threads of Moss v Paston.

i think warner catches more but other than that paston a better keeper, faster, more communication and looks more confident coming out for balls.   bring back paston

I think Pasty is a better keeper. Warner has done ok but he's got to stop gobbing off at match officials.

But if people keep going on about a certain player should be playing, Ricki seems to dig his heels in and stay with the one he's chosen.

That is always going to happen with goalkeeper selections though.

I seriously doubt rick reads these forums then does the opposite (though that's probably not a bad idea!)Tegal2011-12-29 11:52:47

Warner will keep the starting spot till he gets hurt, that's the only time we change keepers. We don't have a clearly defined #1 and #2 keeper, so just being fit won't get Paston back into the team.
