Warner vs Paston

Come on Ricki, you know you want to.............. But hope Pasty doesnt have a shocker

"A return to the Wellington Phoenix starting eleven may come sooner rather than later for bench-warming goalkeeper Mark Paston.

Paston's spent most of the season backing up import Tony Warner, however a late blunder from the Englishman in the Phoenix's 1-0 loss at home to Perth may prove Paston's saviour.

Coach Ricki Herbert has refused to give much away but says he'll look at the tape.

He says the ball was swirling in heavy wind at Westpac Stadium, but they'll review the match and know that some one of Paston's a quality replacement if justified."

Don't bring back Paston our defense is as solid as it's ever been.

I'm not an advocate for bringing back Paston but conceding 7 in our last 4 games hardly indicates a solid defence?

Warner makes you have your hand in your mouth. I have no confidence in his ability - or lack of. He doesn't organise the defence well at free kicks nor corners. FFS Have a player at each post! Simple stuff. In fact Warner spends more time gobbing off at the referees than helping his defence stay organised.

I'm sorry Ricki but on this we will always disagree. Warner is 37 and crap. We should/could have signed a young Vukovic last season and have regretted not doing so ever since. The season before there was a similar chance with Reddy whom was on fire for the Nix. Though he's not done so well now, who knows. perhaps its just because he is at Sydney.

Bring back Paston and sign a youngish Keeper.

Most teams don't put men on each post during corners these days, more emphasis is placed on tighter marking inside the box.

I don't think I've ever seen a player stationed at the posts during free kicks, that's a moronic thing to do.

There is the odd occasion where it comes in handy (ie: a free kick pretty much on the byline) but yes, very very rare...but this is another debate for another thread.

Warner needs to be benched, hes had a few shocking moments, and that near post goal was pathetic

How can you call it a near post goal, the ball was crossed from the other side of the park and he was beaten at the far post from where the free kick was taken.

I'd call it a back post header from the free-kick. Just sayin'.

As in "unmarked at the back post"

Fair enough if it did not come directly from the free kick but it did so therefore a goal at the far post.

We never had the opportunity to sign Vukovic did we? When he came to us, he already had a contract with Perth - but not effective until this current season - and was only free until the close of the season, which is why he was available for a short period with us. Unless you mean competing with Perth for his signature when he was released by that Turkish club mid-season?

Huh? The goal was conceded from a header at the near post after being crossed from the far side.

Does it really matter?

I thought he was completely contract-less when we signed him, and then Perth signed him when he was only warming the bench for us, before Paston got injured.

As a keeper, in complete agreement with you there. If you put a defender on the post for a free kick (unless location of FK means it's practically a corner), then you're giving the opposing forwards license to be as far forward as they like and still be onside. Also, giving the opposing forward the choice of pressuring you before the ball's even kicked - might just be something I particularly hate being as short for a GK as I am.

For corners, I always want someone at the backpost - again, at my height it's the danger zone for me. I prefer near post cover as well but if personnel means just one, I stick 'em at the back post.

I stand to be corrected, but I thought we only signed him to the end of the season because he already had a contract for the current season and the arrangement suited us to have cover for Paton and him to have a club to fill the gap in his contract period. Pretty sure that's what I read on here when we signed him.... but could be remembering wrong.

Correction: you're right and I'm wrong. A google search suggests he signed for Glory in late November or early December. My apologies. Sorry LG for questioning your better memory!

I know but it feels we offer other teams less scoring opportunities than in the past lately especially away from home. Put it this way i'd rather us change the middle of the park and get a striker in than fiddle around with our back 5.

Yes it was back post from where the FK was taken, but I'm calling it near post from where it was, he had enough time to get over to it (thus near post) and pretty much watched it in

They were both far posts from where I was standing as they were at the other end of the ground. The near posts were both at the Fever end of the ground as they were nearer than the far posts. Therefore it was the far, far post as opposed to the far near post or the near far post.

As for this post..... I'll get me coat.

I'm slightly disappointed!

Well theyre all far posts for Warner as his positioning and wandering out of the box leaves them somewhat distant!

That is for another thread and certainly has some merit to it. I believe he is wearing too many hats. I think Ricki needs to concentrate on doing one job as best as he can instead of spreading himself around.
