Who will be keeper for the AW,s friendly in Feb?....Moss is injured. Is Rickie going to play a keeper who won't have played for 3 to 4 months?

Wasnt sure if you have been posting seriously or not, until i saw your post in the away form thread suggesting ricki coaches for home games, and someone else coaches away games.Im now convinced youre having a laugh.

serious posts get shot down just as easily as flippant ones

Both are off contract, so lets get through this season, then re-sign Moss and a young keeper to be his back up.

Objectively, why would Moss leave the Gold Coast where he is captain and probably on a decent wicket (nice environment too) to come back to Wellington? The only young keeper I think you could use (I haven't seen him but I read he is has a bright future?) is the Wellington kid Basalaj. Would be youth (ticks a box), is a local (ticks a box) and would be ideal for learning considering back up keepers don't play much in Wellington.... er.

Paston has said he has had talks with other next year but every player does that to keep their value and demand up.

Gleeson would be the obvious answer. See if his MLS form translates to the international stage. Moss (injured) and Paston (match fitness) are known quantities.

I don't think Paston is overly briliant, but he surely would have saved the near-post shocker Warner let in on Friday night.  So far, I haven't seen any evidence to suggest that Warner should be picked over Paston.  But that's Ricki for you - he refuses to play his best team - has his favourites - most of them are the less talented players in the squad.

GCU has a policy of only offering 1 year contracts. If we could offer similar terms but with a longer contract length, he might want to have his future more secure.

Didn't know that. Good bargaining point.

Looking towards next season, these are the A-League keepers off contract this season:

Mark Birighitti
Andrew Redmayne
Glen Moss
Clint Bolton
Ante Covic
Ben Kennedy
Matthew Nash
Mark Paston
Tony Warner

There are 4 teams losing their main keepers. Jets are rumoured to be after Birighitti, after Moss' experience in Melbourne I don't think the Heart would appeal to him. So would leave it between us and GCU for his signature, so if GCU keeps their policy we would be in a good position to go for him.

Unless we look at Dean Bouzanis again.

This. I think he has been beaten twice at his near post (?).

I think Warner is alright, but he is never going to be man of the match for us, which is something Pasty might.

Paston hasn't always been a reliable pair of gloves, but he's done well for us over the last two seasons when he's been fit.

Interesting comments from Ricki today, maybe some us were right after all and Ricki wasn't benching Warner because he hadn't made any glaring mistakes

I couldn't be at the match yesterday, but I don't really like that chant as it's effectively saying to our goalkeeper on the park that we don't think he's good enough.

This is exactly how I feel. As soon as that goal went in I said that it was shocking keeping, and that I want Paston back. However I would NEVER chant against a player on our team, and the Bring Back Paston chant does exactly this, chants against Warner.

I will be one of the first to start the "We love you Paston" chant if he plays on Sunday though, as it is much more positive.

From Rickie comments today it looks like Paston might be playing against Perf. Big ask to come in cold like that....he has not played for 2 months.
Even though Warner made a mess of that goal I thought he did some good stuff. I have been pro Paston but there is not much between them....One of Warners saves was absolutely world class!! but you do get judged on your mistakes as a goal keeper

Ricki's quotes in the Stuff article seemed inconclusive to me. If you place weighting on the stability and security behind back four comment, you'd assume no change. I reckon Warner will be kept in.

Ricki's right about the problem of no reserve team. The longer Paston goes without game time, the more you'd think Warner will have to get injured or make a series of gaffes for Paston to get back in.

Given where we are now, I'd stick with Warner against Perth.

Hopefully Paston has learnt a few things from watching Warner's experience, to help some of the weaker parts of his keeping.

This goal is a perfect example of one of the reasons why i dont mind seeing Warner in goal. Doesnt even attempt to save it, just watches it go into the back of the net.

Yesterday vs Sydney Warner made a brilliant reflex save to deny Mark Bridge in the play leading up to the penalty. And even though maybe he could have done better with the second goal, every keeper makes mistakes in games.

Yeah I feel like if we did bring Pasty back in, we would soon realise that we wanted Warner back.

Pasty does flap around a fair bit and punches far too many crosses.

Plus that goal highlights something that he has done on more than one occasion.

True. Looks to me that Paston might actually have a higher "game to howler" ratio than Warner. Paston is 1 from 1.

Feel there is a bit of rose tint in some folks memories of Pasty.

EDIT: They're both decent keepers, both with certain weaknesses. I am equally (un)comfortable with either!

1 from 1 howler for Paston...? He earned us a point at Gold Coast!

I'm not a big Pasty fan - but I know he's made many reflex saves and would ubdoubtedly have saved those that Warner has a few that Warner hasn't too. Pasty has played behind much more unsettled back 4's for the Nix too.

2000 years ago we would have been fighting with swords and axes, hell even a 1000 years ago. So we try and get the same sort of kick by attending football matches. We can't kill each other, particularly as we are on the same side nor can we beat each other up so instead we scowl.

My point exactly. However i think Paston does need game time especially with the World Cup qualifiers coming up next year (even more now that Moss is injured).

I would laugh if some of the people who say Warner is sh*t started hating on Paston if he lets in a soft goal or makes a simple mistake. Warner is a top class keeper, especially for the a-league, and is probably the most experienced the Nix have had
