The fact we have signed no strikers but 4 defenders and 4 midfielders does make me concerned. The noises coming from the Phoenix that we are not going to make any new signings until January makes me think it could be a long 2 months in terms of goals

oh well could be worse in the goal scoring stakes
 
we could have gone out and signed a champions league medal winning attacker on the basis that he might score some goals or even provide an 'assist', or at least draw the defence's attention so that goals would come flooding in from elsewhere in the team

It's more than noises - that's exactly what Herbert has said, clearly that is what the owners have told him.
 
A bit disappointing as we are probably only two very good players away from being competitive with the top tier (except the Roar). I only hope when we do eventually recruit it is a couple of make a difference players (striker and AM).
 
Maybe we should put a tail on Ange P, he seems to be light years ahead of any other coach in the A-League in terms of spotting and signing talent. Not to mention the Roar are playing unbelievably attractive and successful football.

On top of that said strikers champions league medal was a bit of a joke, he only played 20 minutes by which stage Liverpool were 2-0 down then went home with a gammy groin, repeated the same feat a few months earlier when liverpool got beat by Chelsea 3-1 in the league cup. Needless to say the only thing class about his time at the pool was a volley he scored against spurs and the harry kewell chant to the daddy cool theme, waste of money then, waste of money now.

My interpretation on whats going on is that Smith will be signed as injury cover for Pantellis. There will be no cover for Pav and Lia as they are both expected to be back on deck by Xmas. I guess this means the team has just has to get on with being 2 players short until those two come back. Pav obviuosly can keep fit by running and could do some ball work so he should be ready to slot in quite quickly.
IMO we are treading on thin ice here....Ifills groin injury could further restrict his involvement...if Greenie got injured then there is no obvious replacement. Greenie is a big hearted player...but expecting a 34 year old to lead the line for 90 minutes for every game of the season is plain dumb.
 
The team has done really well all things considered to pick up 4 points in the first 3 games.
But there is still most of the season to go. Fatigue, injuries, suspensions and loss of form are all going to happen. Having a squad light in overall quality and size is going to bite you on the bum sooner or later.

Well would have been keen to have had him- but he was in a defence that shipped 5 goals in 5 minutes to Brisbane and lost 7-1...so!!!!

Not so sure on that. Average Championship wages of arouund $400,000 would hardly buy a goal scorer. Unlikely to pick up an "up and comer" or a quality player, more likely to get an older fading player with limited time available

The UK has some of the highest player wages on the planet. if you have lots of dough then go and try and recruit someone from Championship level. But we don't have lots of money. Iv'e said it before and I will say it again. There are some excellent players playing in Holland who would do really well in the A-League.
 
I have been in in Holland for most of the last 3 months and have watched heaps of games...both first and second Div. There are some remarkably skiilful players here. Just about everyone seems to be technically gifted. Lots of locals tell me that because of the economic crash there are lots of players being cut....especially from Div 2 and lowwer Div 1 and are looking for any way to continue their pro careers.
 
Gold Coast have picked up a few...and buy all reports they are looking good. Their attacking mid Jauslanger(spp) has played 70+ games in Div 1. Players like that would not be asking for Championship wages. Remember Serg Van Dyk came fro Dutch Div 2
 
Not sure the Nix have an agent in Holland but IMO they could find some real quality here.

I assume if Greenie or Ifill were long term injuries we could bring in other "foreign" players as injury replacements??

ah well you see, if our midfielders didn't keep getting cards we'd not be playing our injury cover striker at DM would we now.  He'd but up front giving greenie the rest the old fella so richly deserves
the players deserve to shoulder some of the responsibility here

Disagree sorry. For the way in which we have played and dominiated our games, we should have more points and in my opinion underachieved. This has all the hall marks of season 1 when we played really good football and dominated but never got the points.

It is not in my view, time for doom and gloom, last two results have been disappointing, but with a bit more luck / composure in front of goal, we could have been sitting on 1o points right now.
 
I know that is a big if, but that coupled with the good football we have been playing gives strong reason for ongoing optimism.
 
Optimism is about the season is not a feeling I had a couple of months ago. Remember it was only on 23/9/11 that the new owners were confirmed.

Was watching training before a meeting this morning and there was a black kid training with them, people who were in the meeting and know more about this kind of thing than I didn't know who he was. Anyone else have any ideas?

His is training at Phoenix as part of OFC initiative.

He benefited from playing under a coach who believed in youth. Surely if he's being the offered the chance to come back, prove a point to the man who left him on the bench and is his AW's coach it's beneficial to him.

We offered a 2 year contract to him, and I'm sure going over and in season one getting that many starts shocked him, the youth league would have been the biggest attraction for him!
