He's certainly a big boy, or as my old Da would say " he's got an arse like a working bullock".

Has does look to have a  bit of speed on him though & can turn, lets see how he performs (and hope that he hasn't eaten all Hollands pies during the off season).

Not a great scoring record..but all we need is about 10 goals.  The "zero to hero"  clip on Youtube is funny.  I note that when Boro signed Alves from Dutch league he was supposed to be it..40 goals per year in Holland..about 5 for Boro..biggest flop we ever signed.

A small town in Europe........looking to bounce straight back up....well that aint going to happen

If we can get him in shape I think he'll do well!

Anyway we'll get some highlights up on YouTube after the game? I know sky's not carrying it but I'd enjoy seeing Memet and Rigters do their thing!

Re: Maceo Rigters, Dutch striker trialling at Nix
Want a good idea of where a player's currently at in form, ability, effort, mentality, fan popularity etc?
Then check out the fans' forums from his most recent club.

Here's search results from the biggest Willem II fans' site in the Netherlands on Rigters:
(Use Google Translate):

Personally I think he'd be a good signing if fit enough (maybe that's why his Aberdeen trial wasn't successful?)

That was one of dozens of links to stories about QPR wanting him. I just happened to choose one that made interesting reading. Type in Jimmy Bullard QPR into Google News and see for yourself.

I think the point was we've trialled a lot of players, signed very few of them, and those we've signed have been crap.

I guess the only doubt I would have about Rigters...apart from finding him a big enough pair of Nix shorts is his ability to adjust to the "English" game. If you look at most of the Youtube clips the ball is always coming to him along the ground to his feet. Basically schooled in the Dutch style. He obviously has talent....90 plus games in Dutch Div 1 and being picked up by a EPL club. But the fact that he didnt really cope playing in England is a bit of a worry. Big Sam Aladice is not noted for coaching teams who play flowerery continental football......direct football to a big striker like Santa Cruse was the norm. Getting loaned out to Barnsely probably was not much of an improvement.
The Nix under Rickie don't tend to play a "ball to feet" style with quick passing and good player movement. How a player like Rigter fits in is open to question.
On the other side...how often do the Nix get a chance to sign a youngish highly talented player who has played heaps of Div 1 games in a good league like Hollland and was on the books of an EPL club and was recently(end of 2010 season) the top goal scorer for their reserve team.

This guy could be fantastic in the A-League. I think the trial will be a question of checking out where the guys head is at and see if he will fit into the clubs structure and ethos. Its only August....if he is carrying a few kilo's the fitness guys will sort that out by seasons beginning.

Some people may wonder what a guy like him coming from a highly paid European scene is doing looking at the A-League. But the papers here in Europe have been full of stories of talented players without clubs. There are probably hundreds of "Rigters" around Europe at the moment, all desperate to continue any sort of professional playing career.

Permalink Permalink

Let's hope he is desperate because then he'll be motivated to perform. If he's done any kind of homework at all on the A League he'll be aware that it's not quite the league of last resort that many in Europe may think it is. Recent history has shown that players who perform very well will probably attract interest from cashed up Asian and Middle East clubs. Better that than warming benches in Europe for the rest of his career.

He's still young and could potentially kick start his career with us, perhaps score himself a highly lucrative contract further down the track. Lot of ifs and buts, but I hope he can turn on a bit of razzle dazzle because it's something that with a few exceptions we have tradtionally sorely lacked.

still i have to admit, Rigters has some pace AND skill for sure. which is what we've lacked in past as a team. not saying that we shud sign him but it definitely wouldn't hurt us. Could prove to be an amazing A-League player. Also visible frm youtube videos that he has some vision to create opprtunities. IMO

Attacking mid for nix? number 10 jersey? I can see it happening.

So whats the call?
Is it a straight shootout between Mehmet and Rigter for one Nix spot? Not sure what how the quota stands for foreign players but if they both stack up in the trials it would be awesome to get both. Billy to hold the line up front and Rigter to work deeper and wider, using his ball skills and mobility.

Does that mean though that we've abandoned the search for an attacking midfield schemer?  If we are able to get that player - and we've had no luck coming up three seasons now - you'd think that it was a one or other deal with Mehmet and Rigters

We currently have 21 players (including 4 triallists) in our squad to play Brislamabad in Dunners. Wouldn't mind betting that at least 2 of the triallists by the end of the month.

Ricki will give Dani Sanchez the chance to play "in the hole" at some stage tonight - he'll go to two in central midfield (with one of Lia and Brown coming off I'd say) and see what Sanchez can do in that attacking midfield role.

Chettleburgh is in that squad also, so guess it's really 5 triallists.

Surely Ricki doesn't need to see much more of him...
