So Warner, Ifill and Greenie are our imports at this stage? Room for 1 more?

Sweet - still look a bit short at the back though - hopefully Bran signs.

So it's a choice between Ritgers/Mehmet/Sanchez at this point I suppose. I wonder who is the closest to being signed? I'm guessing Ritgers is probably the one we're most interested in.

Right... So are there any bases there not covered?

I think the point was we've trialled a lot of players, signed very few of them, and those we've signed have been crap.
Another very good reason why developing local talent always works out in the medium to long term. Bringing in foreigners or "buying success" is usually a long drawn out process that costs a lot more in time and money than does nuturing and developing the local talent from home.
The U23 Olympic trial in Taupo is probably worth a look if Ricki has time.

My money is on Paperback (Rigters) and the Marmot.

Although given that Dirty Sanchez has hung around so long would tell me he's either 100% keen to play in the Stripey or Management see something in him that we can use!

Ricki just on Radio Sport saying that Ryan Nelsen was giving him positive reports about Rigters. But obviously the doom squad here know better from watching a few YouTube vids.

after tonight, I've come to a decision.

Although we have been saying we need a creative midifelder to create play, I think its nearly time where we need a new CB to not hoof it long.
Siggy, you are a legend, but I think we need a ball playing defender if we want to get any furtherr

Sure a creative midfielder would be able to direct play, and create space, but not if he never has the ball, and by the sounds of it, we are still hoofing it right over the midfielders, or laying it wide.

Either way, our center midfielders are getting little posession in attack, and guys like mehmet end up chasing long balls all evening and never receiving ball to feet.

This may be an overreaction, but surely the nix and NZ footy need to see the disadvantage of hoofing it out from the back. How are we ever going to grow ball playing midfielders in this country if we never give them the ball on attack. And guys like chettleburgh will never grow into what we need, not to mention the fact they are left out of national squads because of their desire to play possession football.

I'm sure he's smart enough to base judgement off more than one game. More important i believe would be the overall stability of the team - the quality of the stadium (regardless of it being in Dunedin) and the size of the crowd may just outweigh the negatives in terms of the team performance. particularly considering our decent showing last two seasons and the fact that this was just one pre-season game against last seasons' champions.

Looked class.  Ifill class.  Three or four great passes no one even expected, and he was wondering why no-one moved for them lol.  Very good goal.  Good pace and work rate defending from the front.  Made mehmeh look meh.
Then sat around watching the team play like goons in the other half of the field.

We'd be mad not to make a very very good offer, hopefully he'll look past the Nix shortcomings in the game tonight.

I assume you were at the game so you would obviously have a much better idea than me, but it seems a little bit premature to single out Sigmund. Sounded like our major problem was the defence being all over the shop, midfield not covering runs through the middle by Nicholls, Broich, Murdocca in particular. That's the impression I got from Piney's call.

Still, perhaps if Siggy had spent more time playing the ball out from the back we might've got a 5-5 draw!

I'd be really interested to hear from those at the game how Sanchez went. He was barely mentioned after he came on so I'm wondering if that experiment has been a failure and he'll be cut loose.

this is gonna sound quite random but,

coincidence that the player we're gonna miss the most Marco Rojas could be replaced by another future fan favourite Maceo Rigters.

Didnt mean to just single out siggy,

just think that signing a creative midfielder may not even make difference unless we start playing it out from the back.

Our strikers wont get ball to feet unless our midfielders pass direct to them.
Our midfielders wont get ball to feet unless our defenders pass direct to them.

Just think the nix are going to be very predictable if our only form of attck is from out wide.
I cant remember us scoring many goals straight down the middle of the park, if any.

True, but I don't think Ricki is ever going to encourage that down-the-middle attack that you and I and a lot of others would really like to see. I predict that our style of play will be just as predictable this season as in the previous four. And yet we'll still watch every minute of every game!

Sack Ricki. Good enough reason. I am sure he saw Meow's passing football style last season. If he;s learnt nothing from that, then he should think again about his playing strategies.

And yes, I agree with your comment about our style being predictable. If you don't play passing football the only other option is to send long balls over the midfield.

First things first... Random alright!!

I have already predicted that Rojas will have a crap season. too many good players, not getting chance to break into first team etc etc...

If we were to sign Rigters, hmmmmmmmm.....

Bit more insight from Ricki. Sounds like Sanchez is a strong possibility with the remaining spot going to one of Mehmet and Rigters.

Interesting to hear Ricki confirming that (a) it is a question of Ritgers v Mehmet, with the Dutchman currently in the lead; (b) that Dani Sanchez did enough to keep his chances alive.

Exactly what I was thinking today. Not a fan of RH's direct game, but feel sorry for him right now, as this whole off the field TS mess, has had a huge impact in trying to attract a top draw players or 2. Yeah, about 5,000 of us will turnup to each home game, but there's no way the floating 5 to 10,000 Wn sports fans are going to watch a mediocre run. Wn rugby fans have given up on both the Hurricanes and the Lions. TS has a big decision to make.

If Sanchez done enough last night then Ricki must've been watching a different game to me.

Also agree with the above. If we stick with the current tactics of 'get the ball to the wingers and expect them to create everything themselves' then we are going to struggle badly.

More variety in the play required.
