Huge loss for us. But transfer speculation is changing all the time so I am still holding out some hope. Without a big key signing now I can really see us struggling this year. Not looking too promising at the moment. There is still time though.. Nz Seb2011-08-24 08:32:06

just signing sanchez is a wee bit dissapointing, but we have to look up.

Rigters was quality, but who knows if he would have even fit into our system at all.
We may end up finding another striker to do the duty, there are loads of guys out there, so its just a matter of the club doing some digging, and also getting guys like ifill, greeny, warner or even sanchez to ring up some mates and see who is keen.

For f**ks sake - the one good piece of news we've got this entire pre-season and he buggers off. Ugh. Really poor. Possibly the first time anyone had some hope for this coming season too. It doesn't help when Ricki big-ups him for all the fans to hear without actually sealing the deal first.

Seriously bad that Ricki seemingly legitimately thought he was going to sign and let Mehmet fly back.

Now all we're left with is Toto mark II. It's going to be a tough couple of seasons when we can't even attract slightly better than average players.valeo2011-08-24 10:11:10

To be fair to Ricki, he never said the deal was done and dusted - just that the club liked the look of him, and was hopeful a deal could be worked out during this week.

No official word from the club about this yet?

At the risk of infringing on Doloras' "always look on the bright side of life" trademark is there any possibility that Rigters and his agent are just playing the most extreme form of hardball here?

As others have pointed out it seems strange that ball-park money wasn't discussed before he even got on the plane. Maybe the Nix are still trying save the situation?

I guess it's more likely we were just a back-up option for him, or his agent has been able to use his trip here as an opportunity to scare up some other interest elsewhere.

I feel like I have been used though

I m not too sure
cant see the club making a big announcement about his depature. I can almost guarantee it will be posted in a line at the very end of the official article of sanchez signing. It will be something like:
"meanwhile, dutch striker maceo rigters has ended his trial with the club and has returned to europe."

I know you're probably right but at the moment nobody from the Phoenix has even been quoted with a simple yes or no as confirmation. This story is based on what his agent (scum-bags at the best of times) told The World Game, which has then been written up by NZPA and spread throughout all the other news outlets.

Well...told you so. He can get way more money from a team in any number of leagues in Europe (he's now linked with trials in Greece and Romania). Unfortunately unless an A-League club pulls out the stops and makes a player a marquee signing, the wage scale in the A-League per year is closer to what decent players like Rigters expect per week!
