odd RH is always at the training sessions I've managed to get to.....maybe Crowther and Jade missed the bus or were traning at the wrong field.
That would explain so much about the 2010-11 season.

Interesting comments about Herbert. I've heard he doesn't have much time for some journalists either when cofronted head on about certain issues. I'd dearly love to see the Phoenix with a different coach because I think recruiting policy is severely constrained by RH in favour of foreigners and would potentially be quite different with somebody else. The time for major change at the Phoenix is rapidly approaching I believe. Once again I reiterate the saving potential that could be unleashed by the development of the local, up and coming young players here.
I agree, The under20 team proved they can compete with class opposition, and surely amongst those players and the olympic team trialists there are talented players we could sign...

1. It's quite ok to not like some journalists. He is the coach, not the PR manager
2. It is in favour of getting the best players that are up to A League standard, and they arent all in NZ, very few are, have you not got that yet
3. Lets come last each year, and save a few bob (sarcasm smiley needed)
4. Their names are and the players they are better thn in the Nix are ...??
This is a speculation thread, not a desparation thread !!

It does seem fairly obvious that Ricki has his 'favourites' and if you're not part of that club you tend to disappear very quickly, rightly or wrongly.
I also heard he was not really 'hands on' at training and his ex-assistant and Gould did most of the coaching at training.

I heard that he doesn't do much and leaves it to Ryan Nelsen to email instructions to the players last season.

I actually heard David Mulligan was running the trainings - why else would have Ricki picked him?

so who is this local chap who is going to bang in 15 goals in a season?
That is not fully the point he was making, we can have foreigners who bang in 15 a season but we can also have young locals who make up a team. No need to get cynical.

Why not?
Every couple of weeks someone comes on and spouts this as though there is some vast untapped pool of A-League quality players in new Zealand and the Phoenix never look at local players. Everytime they get shot down and still someone brings it up again.
Well may he get cynical.
If there is a young local who is good enough then the Phoenic will look at them like they always have, but the truth is many of them simply aren't good enough to play at a level higher than the ASB Premiership and many of them struggle at that level.
There is nothing to be gained from having a Phoenix side that lose because they felt they should have a quota of U20 New Zealanders who simply are not up to it. It's a sure fire path to the end of the Kingz.

They needed dwarf clown, a waterboy and someone who could clean up after their barbecues.

Once an idea gets traction and goes around the block a couple of times, regardless of validity, it becomes perceived as fact.
Hence the fact that RH does not give young NZers enough of a chance is fact, even though it is complete and utter bollocks.
That said I wish he had played Kosta more.

Key words are developing and nuturing young up and coming players. I've said that several times and it seems certain posters seem to think it means stuffing the entire first team squad full of undeveloped Kiwi talent who would be consistently beaten week in week out in the A league similar to what happened at the Kingz and then Knights. That only benefitted Jeremy Brockie ultimately.
A Phoenix reserve team and a Youth team are what I'm proposing here that would eventually pay dividends. Until such a structure eventuates we won't see A league level or International level Kiwi players coming through in large enough numbers to increase our playing stocks. We will just have a continuation of the present which is dribs and drabs. Future international playing success hinges on a professional system that really does promote and encourage New Zealand players to be able to play professionally in New Zealand or the All Whites will not improve much beyond what has already occurred. The only other feasible alternatives are an Auckland based A league team adding some more kiwis to the A league or the ASB Premiership suddenly finding enough money to become professional (probably won't happen in our lifetime).

The phoenix can't afford a youth team, it can barely afford a first team.
Also, we have to be careful about signing young players on pro terms, it means they can't go oversea on scholarships and if they fail to make the cut at the nix, then what.
We should only take youth players we are confident will go on to make a mark like Kosta and Marco.
That said, sign Branch and the young striker whose just gone to Blackburn if he's not picked up.

The proven path for young kiwis is to head to the USA, theres no arguing this. Ricki isnt going to just sign someone who isnt good enough just for the sake of having young kiwis in the squad, and ruining any chance of a US college scholarship in the progress.

Like with basketball do young footballers have to remain amateurs to get a USA college scholarship?
And I agree a young kiwi would be better off going to the USA than trying to slug it out in Britain.

In this article, it seems Rigters was led to believe he would be offered a certain amount before arriving here, then was offered less twice.
Also he says there is interest in Australia so could it be possible we could see him playing against the Nix?

"Before my arrival they had been asked if I wanted to play football as a certain amount. The first bid was levied by the lower and was for a period of eight months instead of twelve. We came still closer, but the last step was not made. When I made the choice to leave. "
"I know there are clubs interested from Australia, but there I think about it later. I am currently in Bangkok waiting for my next flight. There are some other things so I can hear it all. It's a big step to play away from home. Then you must be a hundred percent a good feeling from it. "

Oi,keep your transfer Speculation out of the transfer speculation thread!
We're too busy discussing terrys finances, ricki not turning up to trainings and the viability of a youth/reserve side.
Does sound like a screw up if true though.

Apologies.. Thought I was a bit off topic since Rigters is no longer a transfer prospect, but I'll try to be more off topic next time!

Also to be fair, it may have been his agent elevating his price tag to him just so he could get him over here and hope he signed.

Yes, bloody agents, and it could also be that he was offered only an 8 month contract at the same fraction as a 12 mth one and so it looked less to him, maths not being his strong suit, as I read in that article

Guess so. But you can hardly call it leaving a club when he was over there for a day or so before he packed his bags and ran.
