this is getting a bit confusing...Does it go like this?
Griffith is number 2 under21 slot and 18th squady

Need another under 21 to make up 3rd U21.....probably Chets....19th squad slot.

Only one import slot....so expect a player of such amazing talent and ability that we will fall on our knees and thank the gods of football for delivering such a player to us(who was soooo good we signed him untrialed)....think Paul Ifill class.....20th squad member.

New owners said Rickie can spend up to the salary cap. So does this mean there is scope or money for a 21st player?...

Don't mean to rehash stuff but didn't signing an old goalie as an import mean we have had to sign an Australasian CD and ended up with a kid with 9 A-league games who could,nt get a gig elsewhere as our only backup to Dura/Siggy?

Acknowledging we were broke at the time using 2 of the 5 imports spots the way we did looks pretty dumb.

This quote really bugs me:

"We'll be very similar to what we had last year. It might be good enough, it might not be good enough, but I think you'll see the club kind of move in a direction where you can bring a marquee to the club. I think that's what most of the fans would want to see too."
http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/football/5714008/Pain-then-gain-for-Phoenix-fans

I dont like that Ricki is openly saying we might not be good enough for next year.
A positive is he is saying we will see a marquee probably in the future, but if thats Killen then Im not sure it would even have the same effect.

He also says the guy they are looking to bring in is "somebody who could play up front but probably a little more coming slightly deeper." So does this mean we are to sign an attacking midfielder to play striker?

Well I had an extremely vivid dream last night that the nix signed a new striker, he was about 40 years old, short, wicked thick sideburns, and was once upon a time a world class striker.
there you have it.

Agreed, especially a back-up, 38 year old keeper. Could have just got another disgruntled Aussie

Yep, or even a young kiwi.. or Crowther

Seriously don't get it.

In the last few seasons when we've had injury probs we've always managed fine, with Vuko, Reddy and Mcmaster - albeit he didn't come on.

Maybe truth to the idea of Warner changing contracts to a coaching role to free up an import slot, or just wishful thinking......

Unless Warner is blindingly better than Paston we coul get more bang for our buck trying to nail 2 import strikers or 1 striker and 1 CB

Next season, the number of import slots reduces from 5 to 4 apparently.

http://twitter.com/#!/BrendanSchwab/status/115899129204453376

So its hard to say its a wasted slot, as he only signed for 1 yr. I can't see many foreign players willing to commit to come over here for only a 1 yr contract.

Any chance Ifill can qualify as a Kiwi next season?

How could anyone not like those things?

I can see Warner and/or Greenacre hanging up the boots and joining back room staff to allow 2 more import signings

Maybe I am a minority but I don't mind seeing a cautious approach, and keeping part of the budget aside for when a marquee becomes available later.

I don't see Ricki's "may or may not be good enough" quote as being overly negative either, he is just being realistic. Much prefer a down to earth manager like Ricki (Ange is similar as well) than a mouth like Miron.

I guess there will be plenty of angst on here if this season doesn't go well and crowds go below 7k, but even if that happens my crystal ball says that there would be nothing stopping us from rebuilding the squad the following year with more preparation time, and when returning to winning ways the crowds will be back again. Looking forward to 2012/13 already!

Now that's just plain sensible talk there! You cut that out right this instance.

Our Achilles heel over the last few seasons has been our recruitment - since Ifill & Greeny it really has been very average.

I think Ricki should be cut some slack over Sanchez - I suspect that has more to do with our financial state at the time than anything else and I hope Sanchez proves my doubts unfounded. But using an import spot on a reserves GK I really don't get.

Since the ownership change, and confirmation of the availability of the full salary cap, I struggle with Griffiths' signing - especially given Sigmund's and, to a lesser extent, Durante's propensity to get suspended, but we'll see.

I really don't think there is much excuse for the remaining recruits being "average" other than the fact the cupboard may be getting bare but that's not the message we are given.

I think everyone would love to see a marquee signing but, personally, I'd be happy with a general lift in skill and pace across the park.

I don't see where a cautious approach comes in to it - it's about lifting our recruitment game and just doing it better.

AC is not good enough to be an over age bench warmer for the Phoenix and perhaps even the A League. Sure he plays/played for the All Whites, but so too did Haynes, Coombes, Pritchett etc. I could go on. He is a hell of a nice lad but based on what I've seen of him in the Premiership against the availability of Mulligan, Mulligan wins everytime - and we all know how he went at the Phoenix. (Granted they are in different positions)

Grumpy old bastard alert
