I'm not sure what game some people were watching tonight but apart from Ifil, Greenacre & maybe Daniel in parts we were awful (almost as bad as the ref). The midfield was slow and ponderous, there was hardly any movement and Bertos had the worst game I've seen him play.

Dear I say it but Ferrante is a much better player than Brown.

Adelaide are a poor team and we weren't much better, based on how they played we should have scored 4 or 5.

Glad we got a point but very disappointed at the effort we put up tonight

1: Ifil
2: Daniel
3: Greenacre

Honourable mentions to Brown, Durante, McKain and Lochead.

Was avery good performance tonight and deserved the three points. Terribly unlucky not to get the win, we should never have conceded that goal. Watching it live, thought paston shoulda come out and grabbed it... and we shoulda nailed at least one further goal. Offside call for ifil's second was a good call though - greenacre was well offside and looked like he was playing at the ball.

Unlucky, but well played boys. This team is very promising. Ifil is class, all round. He'll be our player of the season, mark my words.

what game were you watching ?

it was very average.

Crazy taking Bertos off (unless he was injured - but didn't notice that he was).

Lochy did come up the wing effectively a couple of times. He's still a bit dodgy on the ball in his own half.

Re: Greenacre - I think I can ask a lot more of strikers than to run and work a lot. How about scoring and creating goals for a start?

Because if you actually look at the laws of the game it was a fair call.

Why? We dominated a team we haven't beat before most of the game and should've won.  I swear some people watch different games. It was disappointing not to win but we certainly improved about 100x from last week.

Again, Greenacre pulled the arm of the Adelaide defender who *may* (probably not) of had a chance to get to Ifill. Watch it again. They are given as offside all over the world. It was harsh on Ifill but to bleat on like it was the worst call of all time is ridiculous.

Just back from the match...Ifill is a wonderful player by A league standards.  Holds ball well, rusn into space..screams for the ball miles before anyone even sees the potential pass he has and then scores great goals.  Purts Greenacre to shame really.  Greenacre was disappointing..dare I say again..jiust runs the offside line and gets caught out.

No more stacked midfields for me plse..we need Chen to get a go..and any other striker we can get as we had no game breakers again....and u dont break games with subs in the last 10 minutes please.  Not that we had any game breakers on the bench sadly.

Very disappointing ..i went to sleep at times.  Great noise from YF.  Daniel okay..whats with bicycle kicks from the sideline!

A small town in Europe........looking to bounce straight back up....well that aint going to happen

Doesnt matter what Greenacre does to the defender, he coulda kissed him for all it mattered, as soon as he goes towards the ball he is active again, and offside....

Besides the obvious disappointment of not shooting on target to keep their GK busy, everything else you said is so off the mark it's not funny.

He's dissapointed because we did not play well, it doesn't matter that they have beaten us before they were a poor team and we should have put them to the sword.

Our movement off the ball was almost non existant and our build up play was slow and misdirected a lot of the time.

We will have to play a lot better than this if we wan't to get anything out of the season

This might sound a little odd but I think Hearfiled would make a good wing back. In the same mould as Jamieson and the lad from Sydney (right wing back). Reason I say that is beacuse he has got good pace and seems to play better when the goal is in front on him rather than the playing upfront and facing backwards/having to hold the ball up etc..

I think it is an option Ricki should look at and has tried before

Yeah that actually doesnt sound like a bad idea!

Big feller I was there and saw them play, the people around me were also dissapointed at our performance, it was not good.

Please explain why we were so good in your eyes tonight? As I said apart from 3 players we did not play well.

The way we started I thought we were going to run over them - and should have but for some poor shooting. Second half we were flat until the last 10 minutes - I thought we would have come out from the half time team talk with a real urgency but ......

Match highlights; Ifill (a class above), Greenacre's work rate, glimpses of the old Daniel (he has all the ability in the world when he extracts the digit) and defensive marking (much tighter than the previous games this season).

Lowlights; Diego (starting to worry he his the 09/10 G** but without the ability), midfielders poor shooting (rules 1 through 10 - get your shot on target), and giving away another soft goal.

I am still concerned that we are still short of creativity in the midfield - I know that Diego was supposed to be the answer but ...... I'd like to see what Caceres offers and wouldn't mind seeing Chen get some game time soon.

He dribbles a lot and the opposition dont like it - you can see it all over their faces. (Ron Atkinson)

look at the way the team plays and relate it back to the coach, its static, negative, and unconvincing. The phoenix are traditionally a team who entertain, the flair seems to be disappearing as the monotonous takes over, no wonder only 7500 turned out tonight. That is two points lost not a point one. Awful.

I would just like to ask....

WTF was everyone?!! 7500 on a clear Friday night is f**king piss poor effort, considering we got 10,000 to the first home game on a cold wet miserable Sunday afternoon.

Disappointed on the offside call, but regardless of that, I think the Ref made some other poor calls towards the end of the match.

And the Phoenix look much better in the game when they're actively trying to create chances. Tonight they played like they did against Perth, and complete opposite of how they played against Sydney.

Ricki needs to take whatever he put in the water bottles, and keep adding it for the rest of the season.Ard Righ2009-09-04 22:49:26

Unfortunately it was offside. Greenacre did interfere in the play enough for it to be justified. It's a tricky law, and I'm not sure if I really agree with it or not, but that's the law - same for both sides.

I think the linesman did actually wait to see if Greenacre was going to involve himself or pull away before raising his flag. Linesman did give one terrible call when he gave them a throw against Bertos. But hey, that happens.

We were a lot better tonight than last week. Was a pretty weak Adelaide team though. Thought we were a bit better than them tonight, but second half we smacked away too many long balls. Was a shame Bertos was unable to get involved more in this game (though he was still one of our best players).

In general, I agree with your comments, apart from some of the criticism that you make really that pisses me off at times (every so often). Secondly, while I was sat the game, I didn't quite have the time to pull out my rule book, sorry about that one, I'll remember to bring it in future. Lack of the voice to prove it. Way I see it, had we scored that goal, I dont think there would have been complaints from the Reds forum that there may very well be on here later (but need to see a replay again myself).

the game should have been well won b4 the disallowed goal or the last 5 minutes of flurry.  Last year second halfs  playing to the YF was all out attack.  we have lost art  so far this season except in patches against Glory.  The passing routines dont do it for me..to many times the triangle is going backwards and then wide or lost.

While there were some kids there tonight, people never seem to really factor just how many come on a Sunday.  I know of at least one soccer tournament up the coast tomorrow morning and getting into bed at 11 wasn't going to be great preparation.

Just so perhas we can have some rational debate here is the rule from FIFA

A player in an offside position is only penalised if, at the moment the

ball touches or is played by one of his team, he is, in the opinion of

the referee, involved in active play by:

 interfering with play or

 interfering with an opponent or

gaining an advantage by being in that position

Doyou understand the game offootball (not soccer)! changed worldwide a few years ago!

Performance in the first half was decen,

However that idiot Herbert changing the formation AGAIN to paly 1 up front in the second half ruined our game!

On your other comments Paston commingout to "grab it"???
The ball was on the ground - no markingoff a corner equals a goal! simple as that!
Sh*te defending isthe bottomline!

Also the offside rule actually states

Was Greenacre interfering with the play? Answer NO!
He was nowhere near where the ball was played to and Ifil came from behind at least 2 Adelade palyers, goal should of stood!

Herbert needs to sort his tactis out! Just Heaping pressure on us at the back and hoping for that late goal at the minute!

Must dosomething or we will struggle this season!

i'll tell you why this is - it's because NO ONE CAN PASS THE f**kING BALL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

brown ? - HAHAHAHAHAHAH. NO. NO HE CAN'T. he passes back. again, again and again.
an elephant has a better pass on him than Brown.

there is only 3 players that can pass accurately (Bertos, Ifill, Greenacre)

the rest are embarrassing.

Im a loooong time lurker - was at the game and this is my first post but seriously, the rules (http://www.fifa.com/worldfootball/lawsofthegame.html page 31) state that:

A player in an offside position is only penalised if, at the moment the ball
touches or is played by one of his team, he is, in the opinion of the referee,
involved in active play by:
 interfering with play or
 interfering with an opponent or
gaining an advantage by being in that position

Of those I can only think that possible b) greenacre was interfering with an opponent. From the replays I saw at the RoF - it didnt look like it too me. Unless someone can post otherwise (i.e. youtube) I disagree that it was offside.

And for all the anst... wtf seriously? It was a far more accomplished game both on and off the ball that we played against Sydney. I don't expect the nix to win every game but with a bit of consistency, we should be up there with the best teams in the league. Our front two (Ifill/Greenacre) have better credentials together than every other team in the league, and we showed a lot more in defense than we have so far. Owusu and Christiano are not to be laughed at, the fact that they missed easy chances I think were attirbuted as much to close marking/defending as to lack of clinical finishing from Adelaide's 'highly fancied' front pairing.

You can move towards the ball in an offside position and still be considered not to be interfering in play (see explanatory notes).  Interfering with play does have quite a high threshold these days
