I put it out to my Auckland supporting brethren if he goes out and has some good moments at the World Cup, then I wonder if he's got an out clause inserted in there... There was some overseas interest previously...
Sounds like several are being bumped up from their Pro League squad to A-League deals, so I'm expecting there will be a few more departures to come from up North.
Auckholes FC didn't even exist when his dad was alive. Guess Bayliss wasn't interested in helping the club from his dads hometown to win something. Don't understand why Milligan didn't want to keep him or at least go overseas.
I find the whole thing 🤮
Milligan did want to keep him.
Around about the time LA Rose signed for Dundee, Bayliss' agent (Tony Rallis) came out saying that offers from Newcastle were basically not on the same page as what 3-4 clubs from around the A-League were offering, and that there was unnamed overseas interest in Bayliss as well.
Seems to be some interesting storys regarding the agency and how they represent a lot of the lads that Stanton had brought in. Whilst also representing Corica & Stanton, seems some preferred moves and dealings take place.
His dad is from Welly, but he is not. His cousin is the kitman for Auckland FC, for all we know, that's where the NZ side of his family all live now. My only worry would be if we made a play and missed out, because I would be wanting to know why.

He would be a natural replacement for someone like Guillermo May, with extra speed to boot. Wishing him well at the WC, hopefully he gets enough playing time on the field to show his quality.
For those who want us to sign a LB, Joel King was also released. He was rather good when he was young but has been bang average since coming back from overseas.
I would hope we are talking to JCP at Sydney as well as Hollman, he however got back into first team plans under Kisnorbo & wasn't included this batch of released players.

McKenlay I'd be surprised if he left Auckland with Gallegos likely leaving. Maybe Brimmer & Verstraete as well stage left.
But I guess you go where you are most likely to get playing time.
McKenlay was released a couple hours ago.
Been bandied about for a few weeks now that he was on the way out. Greeny made him captain for some games in the U20 so obviously rates him. Not sure he has enough pace for A league ...even for a defensive midfielder.
Think AFC want to keep Verstraete but hear Brimmer has been made an offer but at a lower rate.

Pennington has said he is leaving the Glory. The salary cap uncertainty meant the Glory wasn't able to put a deal on the table for him yet.
1st yeay Glory Pennington would be well worth a look. Especially if Rufer is going, infact even if Rufer stays they could work well together. That's assuming we dont get the version of Pennington we had after his return from Italy.

Can't kick for shit (can barely clear halfway) and is quite small for a keeper without having the diving reach to cover. However, he's a far better communicator and decision maker than Oluwayemi, just as brave, and has similar reflexes.
Don't think he's an A-League quality keeper yet - with a bit more time training in that environment, I'm sure he'll get there. Has the drive and the intangibles

I understand the angst behind wanting to fill the Rufer shaped hole next season, and as a whole I have no major qualms with Pennington's tenure at the Nix, but I'd like us to aim higher. I usually avoid getting lost in the constantly comparing ourselves to Auckland but you've got to admit we are going to have to put some hard work into salvaging some grace next season and come out punching. I think re-signing Pennington would be pretty unambitious. It's fair to say he improved season upon season but only amounted to a serviceable A-League standard midfielder during his time with us, no more, no less. He always was prone to a number of shocker passes per match. For me, that's a role where the payoff will be much larger if we either scout abroad or identify a local younger talent that we can work on as a multi-season project.

I don't think if we signed Pennington it'd be for a nailed on starting role would be more replacing Retre. With Hollman and import DM the 2 starting and then maybe Pennington replacing Hollman during the season based on form.
We could still maybe get a better backup DM than Pennington but defintely can't think of any NZ ones.

not sure Hilton would be any beter than AKH or McCarron. Sure he's a couple of years older but with less Aleague experience than both.

Looked good in his small opportunities for Auckland I thought, also, despite having less A League experience, his state experience, including goalkeeper of the year, I think stacks up a lot higher than the reserve grave footy McCarron and AKH have had... so there is that.
I am not sure it makes sense to have a third keeper who is also of low experience (regardless of skill). When we had Paulsen as the first GK, the backup was an experienced older GK. We need to have a mix of both age and experience in the GK group.
Pennington played further forward and wider for Perth?
Is Hollman a guaranteed starter? I don’t think anyone is ‘guaranteed’. Form fluctuates.
Pennington does my head in. I thought he was good for us. But he was hitting Old, Kraev, Kosta and Payne on counters. And he was good for us in partnership with Rufer.
Maybe?
Al Taay also had a good season for us then, too.
I think part of that was the clarity around the role each player had in that system.
Essentially would Greenie trust him? All those players that season really had Chief’s trust and Griff’s too. It’s a key position and needs to be someone Greenie has full confidence in.
lol- sorry for the other chat above. I meant non-visa:ie Hollman.
He's not my favourite LB, but would be good enough to mean we use a visa spot elsewhere. Good to have an aggressive left sided player given that lots of our width comes from fullback.
Has he been less defensively frail since he left us?

The Roar’s defence was miserly first half of last season, then fell away esp once young classy Herrington left for the MLS
Pretty sure they played a back 4, when the general consensus had been McGarry was only good in a back 5
Valkanis likely would have improved his defensive knowledge
At least this part of the leaving announcement gives some solace: 'The Nigerian striker has decided to pursue options outside of the Isuzu UTE A-League'
Edit: Also just want to say that I can't really blame him for chasing his dreams overseas, he gave his everything whilst he was here, and I hope he does well wherever he lands

Eze easily goes down as one of our best one season players/strikers, and you could argue, in the A-League. How he transitioned from Iraq to here was fantastic. A rare bright spot in another tough, tough season and he never stopped fighting. Said it before and I’ll say it again, I’m excited to see where he goes, has earned that Europe move. Take care Eze. 🥲
It’s nice that we are already being linked with a couple of players, Hollman and McGarry (would be returning).

It's not saying too much, but he was easily one of Brisbane's best the season just gone. Statistically he was very solid, and there's that knack of his where he always seems to perform against us too. He would be several steps ahead of what LKH would offer us in the same position in my opinion.
However...
It would be baffling to me if they let him terminate his deal to go to another A-League club, especially as they've already released in the vicinity of 15 players at this point. Brisbane hold the cards in that respect, but perhaps something has gone on behind the scenes that's lead to this talk even coming up on our radar?
