Other than Hollman, could see Singh on a perm (especially if his club just wants him off the books)? Maybe tricky with him in WC camp, but might give him confidence going forward.

Haha, ok Brisbane seemingly happy to give their cards away very cheaply.

Someone tell them it's not Christmas. 😆

Good to read that the Nix tried from early in the season to retain Eze for another year, if Gill is to be believed. They generally give off the impression that they leave contract talks until very, very late in the season at the earliest. The only extension I can remember them nailing down early was Oluwayemi, and that didn't go very well.

Easy for me to say but it'd be ideal if we got critical imports/signings on at least 1+1 deals. You could include in that contract an automatic wage increase if the extension is triggered by the club, to make it more enticing to the player. Getting critical signings on 1 year deals doesn't help us very much, 1 step forward and 2 steps back sort of stuff if they leave after an impressive season and they're not contracted for more.

Getting McGarry for LB is fantastic. A really solid back 4 now to build on.

Why the need to doubt Gill? Contract negotiations are a two way street, club can offer a 1+1 deal but the agent/player doesnt have to accept it. Eze came here saying he wated to have a good year and then look elsewhere - ie Europe. We could have offered a 1+1 but it probably didnt fit his plans. Having him for last year was better than not having him at all.

Besides, I expect you would be the first to jump on the club if a 1+1 was offered and accepted and for some reason he didnt reach your expected target but managed to reach the trigger to extend.

Queenslander 3x a year.

In this position a definite upgrade on last season.

Good piece of business.

Feels weird to have our defensive line sorted before literally any other part of the squad.

Onwards and upwards guys; building off a solid backline of Kiwis! Hopefully it inspires Rufes to stick around for another couple of years too.

Nearly, not fully. Haven't replaced Manjrekar James yet and Jayden Smith still teenage, learning.

The starting backline should be sorted however - Payne, Hughes, Billy T and McGarry

Note my qualifier "easy for me to say", of course some players might only come on a 1 year deal and not if it was a 1+1. But perhaps it would be better to not go for players that will only come on a 1 year deal and a 1 year deal only, even if that means you get a player that is not quite as good.

I would also envisage in a 1+1 contract that the option should be entirely up to the club, or only triggered if they have a great season (certain number of starts or goals/assists), so that it can only be a good thing if the extension is triggered. A contract can easily be structured in this way.

I too support turning away the very best players if they only come for one year, due to the well-known rule that if you win a trophy with players on single year contracts you actually have to return it when they leave, as though it was never won.

The question is how much are LKH or Sheridan going to push these guys as backup and in training?

They have their strengths but aren’t Manny Muscat, Jon McKain or Salas. On their performances to date. (Maybe they’re understudies for Payne and Tuiloma/Hughes, ready to go in two years time. ) I’d love a midfield and defensive utility of that level too. James brought something we didn’t have last season. I’d love a player to push the established players and to be strong cover for injury or form dips.

God they were the days - Jon McKain as back up centre back.

Australian international who giot the Nix a cool 1.5 million (US?) transfer fee.

How the hell did we never won a trophy in that era?

Pleased with mcgarry signing, hopefully he continues his good form from Brisbane and not his bad luck at the dons. Solid starting back line that’s for sure.

Not sure I quite agree with james, he started off well but then seemed to lose his head completely and actually started costing us. Whether that was his form or it was due to finding out we weren’t going to retain him, I don’t know, but he was subpar for a visa CB.

On eze, gutted to see him go, had a glimmer of home when it wasn’t confirmed last week that we had a shot but it is what it is. Glad to have had him for one than none. Sure would have been a depressing season without him. Wish him all the best and hopefully he spreads the good word of the nix wherever he goes 💛🖤

Heavily depends on the imports we pick up, but if Hollman also joins then that’s not a bad looking XI.

Still have my fingers crossed for Rufer staying, in which case we could pick up an import GK (if Hollman signs).

I’d also love to see Ben Gibson join, he’d be an excellent player to bring off the bench, or even to start alongside an import striker.

2 things from me.

I wonder if this affects Hollman potentially coming: https://sydneyfc.com/news/sydney-fc-signs-jake-hollman-on-three-year-deal/

Glad our defence is looking good, hopefully we get a decent GK (not a local lad unfortunately) in as defence wins championships, attack wins you games.

Crocombe could have been a good option but he has kinda broken into Milwall and wouldn't be the worst signing for any lower table EFL Championship level teams needing a GK or do a Freddie Woodman/Scott Carson and sit on the bench as a 3rd GK for some PL teams.

Nik Tzanev? AP needs to GTFO of Bournemouth if they loan him to a random team and league again or send him back to AFC too.

Others commented that he is more use as a substitute to go past tiring defenders. I hope if so, he gets brought on earlier than this recent season. Instead of what was 80 or 83, bring him on at 65 minutes. Then Nathan Walker the later one.

LBS should definitely be telling Greenie he wants to start on that right 10 position all pre-season and pushing to do it.

I don’t mind a slightly unsettled starting 11 if it’s competition between good players, in a healthy team environment.

The other possibility, if we can sign enough local players and Walker is back etc, is that we hold an import spot for a January impact signing, when we can see what we need to push us over the line or fingers crossed to cover any form or injury issues.

He will be 18. I imagine if Sander leaves they will get an experienced foreign attacking midfielder soon. Also only so many from Aus want to be here. Players like Matt Grimaldi or Denis Genreau are rusted on Melbourne/Sydney types that will never play here. & most other NZ players still here, in those spaces, aren't A League level.

If he wants to be good he’s got to be ambitious in his goals. I don’t think it’s that much of an ambition with his talent to want to be starting at 18. Doesn’t mean he’ll start every game, but he should train with that as his target, surely.

If we have to use up our import quota, fine. But if we don’t, handy.

I know it's a few levels down, but he's looking as fit as he can be playing in the Central League of late.

IIRC he's moving onto a full contract for the 26/27 season too.

Real shame last season was a write off for Walker.

He was one of the better players for NZ at the U20 WC in Chile. Stood out more than LBS (2 years younger). Walker gave the U20s team some of their better attacking moments

Greeny will know him well (like many of the ex Weenix kids). Hopefully he's now injury free and kicks on 2026/27.
This will be his 3rd season around the first team. Needs to add some strength and bulk.

Must be a fair chance that at least one of him, LBS and GSR step up to have a real stand out campaign. All going into their 3rd seasons so better equipped to handle the rigours of the A League.

I might have asked before. What has happened with GSR? As in okay maybe injured and just doesn't fit into the system but before LBS was signed wasn't there quite alot of hype and media attention when GSR signed or am I misremembering?

There was definitely hype. Zawada did a Q+A on his Instagram story at one point, and answered a question asking who the best young player at the Nix was with a picture of GSR.

I think someone posted on here recently that Gab had now left the Nix, but I don’t know whether that’s true.
