Prepare to be disapointed went to training and he is playing a  part and looking confidant doing it. Never ceases to amaze me how quick some are to right off young players when they havnt really had much of a go,yet coaches continually give those same guys time.

yeah I think he was one of the players that suffered the most with Italiano's approach to the game, I'm not sure he was able to adapt to the required floating roles. Hopefully Greenie is abele to get the best out of him!

I had two minutes while in Trentham this morning to have a sneak look at training. Saw what looked like Ben Sugmund in a Phoenix coat just outside the ground.  Anyone know what his role might be?

FRC had no clear role under Chiefi, look at Nagasawa for example who was a very senior pro with tonnes of experience under him. He looked very poor to begin with. This year should be more of an indication of what he has to offer.

Yes. Some people commented he was played out of position (his ideal is defensive midfield). & Kazuki Nagasawa was never meant to be defensive midfield. Fortunately those baffling ideas are binned with the Chief gone. Chris Greenacre will do normal positions.

I ave an interesting (to my old brain, being retired and looking for things to do) piece of research.

Over the last few days, I have found a fan forum for all of the 48 clubs in England - Leagues One and Two.  Wanted to see (with their league season now only days away), but with the window still open, who the fans wanted them to recruit.  Of the 48, no less than 46 are desperate (according to the fans) for a striker.  40 want an attacking midfielder and 35 a centre back.

I dare say that clubs on the European mainland have similar lists.  So, the way I see it is possibly this.  We will may have to wait in all likely to see what is left until these clubs have got their rosters sorted

Or you manage to find a gem who wants a change of lifestyle. Im allowed to dream of another Ifill turning up.
Was also at training today hung around for a while spoke to few of the lads and Siggy. Early days but the guys seemed to be working well plenty of banter and laughing mixed in with the serious bits. Some good early signs for me someone, not up with the tactical side of the game.

To increase the aggro of our defenders to make them Gabriel’s and not LKH’s?

Was it a new coat/coaches coat? or just one may have from previous days

Yes. Now that the other side of the club has had announcements I imagine today or tomorrow, men's team, then more next week. Got to sign at least 8 more players to even reach 24 players.

18 is minimum, 23 the maximum for Senior deals.

18 would be nowhere near enough. I imagine they would get 23. Need depth to go anywhere above 7th.

That's senior deals so scholarships don't count - 18 could be enough (you have fewer players under the cap meaning average salary is higher under the cap) if you're confident of scholarship players ability to contribute.

By my count we started last season with 19 senior players + 5 scholarships (ended 21+6). Currently we have 15 + 1

So could be up to 8 more senior players, but more likely 3-6 range.

Scholarships will presumably come through after the Central League season is done, possibly even after National League depending. Hard to say how many, had around 5 the past few years, so maybe 4?

In theory could be almost a signing per week until the seasons starts, although it likely won't work out that way.

Well they are due pre season match 1 soon, surely. let  see if they can announce 1 or 2 new players by tomorrow or Monday.

What I'm saying very clearly to you is, they could get a bald player. Remember Stein Huysegems.

Well, Albert Riera was an ambulance driver here already wasn't he? It would be interesting if the Phoenix get someone that's by coincidence already here.

Sorry, that was a torturous pun on my part thinking you might’ve been referring to a particular bald player.

Good spotting, it does look like him. Maybe he'll step up, but feels pretty underwhelming. Wasn't one of the best players for SIU, but does fit our business so far of bringing back former players.

If OVH is to be resigned, it certainly isn't the end of the world. As much as the next few signings need to be game-changers and winners, you still need a layer of players who fit the cap and have experience, to sit between the first team stars and the overly-raw kids. We lost that layer with the players we released over the off-season, and OVH would be a prime example of someone to fill that gap.

Yeah not really a fan of this. The only noteworthy thing I remember him doing when featuring for the first team was providing the free-kick delivery for that Surman winner at home against Victory. Had unfortunate luck with injuries in Ireland and then Canada after leaving us. I only watched a select few OFC Pro League matches overall, so have no idea how he did with SIU.

But yes, if anyone can get some spark out of him, it’s Greenie.

Such a frustrating player, I really wanted him to kick on. You never know though, maybe he hasn't signed just yet. He could be trialling or even just training with us to make up numbers before trying to pick up another deal

He was very limited, offered little and has done nothing since leaving us. Rather give a youth more game time than bring in known quantities like him.

We shouldn't be aiming for guys who failed at the Canadian and LOI Level.

Did he actually do anything at all in the OFC league?

Wasn’t he dropped from that side even?

He's been with the academy a while, Dylan Gardiner. I'm not sure where he will be next.

Nothing notable. Haris Zeb played the same position and looked better than OvH.

Got injured before the final circuit and was replaced by Ry McLeod

Does anyone know why the club has been so apprehensive to look at the local leagues for signings in recent years? De Vries, Howieson and Randall came through that avenue for Auckland FC and have been very solid at this level. I don't believe the difference in quality between a high-level local league player and the A-League is that large.

Some of our better players over the years have come from there as well (Riera, Krishna, McCowatt, Payne, etc). I understand that leaning into the academy model requires us to show academy prospects that they have priority over these players, but it seems a bit ridiculous to just give up this avenue.

The last players we signed from National League clubs were Corban Piper and Luke Brooke-Smith. One of which we just sold for im guessing solid money, and the other is a very useful squad player. The last ones before that were Nikko Boxall (only really came in as squad cover) and Clayton Lewis (gambling issues aside was a very handy player for us).

Some players playing in the local leagues I think could be useful would be Nathan Rostron (tall, quick, strong, young defender at Auckland City), Nathan Lobo (could provide solid cover for McGarry at LB), Kian Donkers (played a little over in Europe, tall striker), etc.

Easy answer is that they have looked at local leagues since inception, but since the academy came into play it has been a management plan to use those players first, simply becuase by exposing their own youth to the Aleague they get these kids into the shop window and get all the money from any transfers, no need to worry about splitting the fee between multiple parties.

The way I remember it. (correct me if I'm wrong). A few years back the club decided on a policy to prioritise bringing players through the acadamy. That way when players that became successful and were on sold the club got a bigger margin from future transfers of that player. The Nix being the original development club.
I think that Chiefy bought into this arrangement and that was a big part of his brief to becoming coach.

But i agree I think this policy has been to the detriment of the success this club has had. For various reasons.

Pretty much this.
From his agent - He was with the squad last week and was invited back this week. Nothing on the table at this stage, and it may well come to nothing, but as a free agent he's got to be putting himself about and be open to any opportunity.

He has hair now! Looks like a different person. Maybe he will join for this A League season as a substitute.

You know for certain that those players wernt approached at some time. Its pretty common knowledge Howieson was approached but turned the Phoenix down due to wanting to stay in Auckland.
As pointed out if the Phoenix think they have players in their system who can do a job why would they go outside that. End of the day its only speculation on who may or may not be able to make the step up.
Not sure  i get why people are getting anxious about signings the club and Greenie have been pretty clear they intend to bring players in. Much prefer they take their time and get it right than just sign anyone for the sake of it.

It appears as if more A-League clubs are moving to the academy development method of recruitment.
