Another week of the A-League

Wanderers currently 10th on the ladder, could be a good moment to bounce back but who knows?

We've got a full week to mentally prepare for the obligatory ex-Nix worldie from BK.

I'd be keen to know what goes on through Chiefy's mind after last Saturday's game.  Does he see it as a blip, again, or does he see that we are failing to do something basic, week in week out, that should see us putting games against the likes of Macarthur or Western United to bed.
Perth, CCM, Brisbane are false yardsticks; these teams are pants.

Actually, getting outplayed quite a bit these days

tweaks definately need to be made. In particular the fact that 5/9 goals from the nix were scored by Kosta is great and all, but he's the only one to score more than 1 goal this season.

The way things are shaping up we are gonna suffer when Kosta inevitably picks up an injury or gets sick

That’s where we’ve been tricky with Kosta- he’s ex-Nix returned to Wellington too, but just scoring the worldies for the right team!

Already losing points from lack of back up goal scorers.

Yes, I overshot myself a bit.... but even if we beat Brisbane 2:0 that will still be a false yardstick as they are a poor team this season.

I really think it's quite simple - we look good with Rojas on. We don't have enough without him, and the depth on the bench is severely lacking. Colakovski, Sheridan and Walker coming on when we need a goal is hardly striking fear into anyone.

We need Ishige to step up dramatically. Aside from his set pieces, he's really not developing many combinations. I also had higher expectations of Nagasawa - he has the right ideas with his passing, but his execution is basically 50/50

Agree on Ishige - but not sure if it is a question of "stepping up" or a role he has been assigned. He is great to watch but seems almost too cautious when it comes to taking the initiative into his own hands.

We have to get some points out of this game or the season is looking like a write off already. WSW don't look like one of the top teams this year so we need to step up if we want to be anywhere near the top 4.

Bit early to be writing the season off i may be overly optimistic but to declare it a write off so soon is just a bit over the top.

Agreed, we lost 4 or 5 in a row to start Uffie’s first season and that turned out pretty well in the end.

Also when the Mariners won the league for the second time in a row last season, by the time Round 9 (the next round) was coming around, they were sitting in 9th.

We of course were top of the league, as had been the story for a large amount of the season.

Maybe. But unless something clicks fast, we aren't replicating last year's success.

Let's see what this weekend brings...

Honestly surprised to see WSW so low down the table. Like us I think they’ve got a bit of as yet unseen potential. Hopefully we won’t see it though!

Will Bally come into the squad to replace Cola?

I'm gonna guess we dont see Ball at all this season unless Colakovski gets injured, which I cant see happening as he barely gets involved in anything in the limited minutes he's played. Unless it's a training injury.

Thats really bad news. He has not been fantastic but he is a solid option off the bench. We were already short in the depth of the squad. I guess Ball will take his place. Do we have any recruiting/loan options?

Great...

Aw well, a squad is build to absorb injuries and maybe it forces a different approach which might be good.

Our squad is definitely not built to absorb injuries, we're running on fumes

IMO Ball is done and we will release him in Jan

Can we even do that tho? it'll have to be mutual consent and I can't really see him getting a gig back in the UK and seems settled here. Unless he needs the extra time to go all in with his academy but with not playing it might be pretty easy for him to keep it running and collect the last 6 months of his contract while doing it.

I guess the club could offer him a coaching role if they did want to release him from the squad - then I'd assume that wouldn't affect his citizenship hopes.

Still feel he probably could offer a few minutes off the bench for us though

Keep Ball fit and ready so that at any time he can drop in. The way things happen with the A-League, you don’t know what surprises are around the corner. Way too early to write him off

A fit Ball with his experience could be good for holding the line round the midfield when we are ahead in the latter stages of a game.

I am expecting he will be down at the club every day, training as if he might be in the team next week plus giving
the value of his experience to the younger players

Wellington Phoenix squad:
1. Josh OLUWAYEMI (gk), 3. Corban PIPER, 4. Scott WOOTTON (c), 5. Fin ROA CONCHIE, 6. Tim PAYNE, 7. Kosta BARBAROUSES, 8. Paulo RETRE, 9. Hideki ISHIGE, 12. Mo AL-TAAY, 14. Alex RUFER (c), 15. Isaac HUGHES, 18. Lukas KELLY-HEALD, 19. Sam SUTTON, 21. Marco ROJAS, 23. Luke SUPYK, 25. Kazuki NAGASAWA, 27. Matt SHERIDAN, 30. Alby KELLY-HEALD (gk), 39. Jayden SMITH, 41. Nathan WALKER

(Two to be omitted)

Ins:
5. Fin ROA CONCHIE (returning from injury)

Outs:
11. Stefan COLAKOVSKI (injured)

With Colakovski done done for the season, I personally would have thought Ball would have made this week's squad.

Guess not...

Guess that answers questions on Ball’s future…Conchie, Piper, Supyk and Walker ahead of him.

And Lukas Kelly-Heald back to cover Sutts.

Walker seems to have taken his spot in the squad right now. OVH needs to force himself back into it on the training park.

A week ago we were arguing who is a better sub option, Ball or Colakovski.  That was before Stefan damaged his ACL.  Seems that even with Colakovski injured, Ball cannot get a look-in (unless it has to do with the "travelling abroad" question regarding residency clause)

And again:

The kid has had 2 10 minute spells and thrown under the bus for 45 minutes as wingback ; you know, the sort of deep end Rojas hasn’t had to do because “he hasn’t played much football for 2 years”

Last year he had 1 goal, 4 assists, won a penalty and had a guy sent off for dogso. All in 372 minutes. Better figures than anyone in this squad.

I know why Nate the Grate doesn’t select him; and it’s not  because he has   ‘biggest brain in the a-league’, but really curious why yellow fever guys hate on him so much?

Surely you don’t all have zero understanding of football?

Is it a racism thing? Anti-semitism? Transphobia? Homophobia?
Heterophobia maybe?
Did he shag someone’s girlfriend?
Still think Frank is his father?

What is it?

People keep saying this but if he was an actual option there is 0 chance he wouldn't have made the squad for a home game. We've got a bunch of kids on our bench.

He is 100% going to be released. I would be shocked to see him play for us again at this point.
