Told ya. Its the same team as last year, which finished bottom.
Was it the coach who was the problem, I guess we will find out!

Do you really expect us to not re-sign anyone from last season? Most of this squad had never played at this kinda level, it takes time for them to get experience.

Yes, last season we finished last but the difference between 7th and 11th was only 6 points. Just getting a regular goal scorer would have made a world of difference to where we finished.

still plenty of signings to come, give up on the needless negativity.

Also the team at the end of the year was leagues above the team at the start of the year.

We shouldn't throw away what started working, just fix the areas that need the attention.

Team actually let 6 players go at end of last season - Ava Pritchard
Saskia Vosper, Te Reremoana Walker, Isabel Gomez, Charlotte Lancaster & Georgia Candy. Plus Clegg has left. Thought I also read somewhere is a larger squad this season?? Is 4 more regular season games (22 up from 18), with a full H&A programme.

So is going to be at least 7 new players. Maybe more than 10.

And yeah I think Temple is going to make a significant difference. That and the club having complete freedom from NZF, on what players they select.

Lawerence was out of her depth.
I’m sure Temple will be a big improvement

Interesting how the women's game in Aussie is a lot more Anglo Saxon heritage than the mens. Much fewer ich's. Even a close surname version of a famous English/Arsenal keeper.

Anyway if the Nix don't re-sign Kelli Brown, some other ALW team must be going to. New team CCM maybe.
It's well known that Croatian women aren't even allowed to *watch* football, let alone play it, though of course they put on fake moustaches and go to the games anyway

“We now can bring in visa players that aren’t at the expense of our Kiwis and build a squad that’s based on the ability of the players and the balance of the squad, as opposed to their nationality.

As a result “more visa signings are on the way”.

That's the best news from this signing.
Was the FFA just being paranoid about the WC? Like they wanted more Aussies playing, even though not likely Matilda hopefuls would have been playing for us, or worried that the Football Ferns would benefit too much from the 'Nix?

Sounds like Ali Riley had influence on this signing. Hope she's good! (pun included)

Possible line up with the players we currently have signed (assuming Trina Davis’ trial is successful).

Whinham and Breslin are both probably more central players and I prefer VDM at CB but that’s still a really promising squad so far. Here’s hoping we bring in some more imports and a dedicated RB.

I thought it was more FA were worried it would just become a stacked team, aka 'Football Ferns' by default - especially in the season preceding the WWC. Lets not forget it's an Australian comp we are lucky enough to play in. The FA run the ALW, not the APL?

Anyway it's all worked out pretty well. Most of the young Aussies that got a first crack with the Nix are now signing with other ALW teams, and the Nix got smart by signing dual nationals like Bri Edwards who then got a taste of the Ferns programme. And despite the Aussie quota requirement for the first 2 seasons, plenty of young Kiwis got their first pro opportunities, and the better ones are still in Welly or like Clegg & maybe Taylor headed offshore already.

  • Emma Rolston and Paige Sacthell gone
  • Betsy - back in iceland....keen to reconnect with her
  • Lily - "complicated because of injuries"

Shame he doesn't bring in kiwi born players, ok to get a few visa players but there is talent local who end up overseas or continue to play in NZ due to whatever reason for this very reason.

I think it is a little unfair on the NIX to argue they are not doing enough to promote young kiwi players.

Without them, we wouldn't have a team for any young player at all. Do you think Clegg would of got her gig without the NIX?

seriously?? you'd rather have a Kiwi player over an import player of some quality? Oh wait of course you would cos then you could complain about how bad the team was doing.

Might have one or two wrong as I’m relying on memory here, but I
thought:
Mackenzie Barry *
Michaela Foster *
Rebecca Lake
Emma Main *
Mickey Robertson *
Kate Taylor *
Alyssa Whinham
Grace Wisnewski
Marisa van der Meer
Were all born in New Zealand.

If not, they are all at least New Zealanders and been here for some time.

I can see the likes of Knott warming the bench if in the squad at all if longo and more visa players are introduced.

Agree with you some people just dont seem to understand that many Kiwi players both Women and Men also prefer to play their football and experience life outside of New Zealand.

Definitely. Her leadership and experience is a huge asset but I’m never very confident with her starting.

No, the APL runs the A-League women's competition. It's not an Australian league, the A-League calls itself an Australian and New Zealand competition, although it is regulated by the FFA.

Temple in his presser said she had only just arrived. Will join the academy and play some games here for them as part of her trial. Good to see she is being supported and made to feel welcome.

So the team is essentially on the same footing as the blokes from a visa situation now? Good to know.

Honestly think it’s better for the locals to be playing and training every day with a stronger team that they can try to break into than a team which is more locals, but getting constantly humped or only defending 80% of the game…

It's seems likely in 18 months or so an Auckland team will also be playing in the ALW. If so there is going to be plenty of opportunities for young promising Kiwis to get a pro gig in the ALW, without worrying about a few visa players blocking their path.

Joey Lynch asked The PFA for details about the 'Secondary Roster'

Primary Player Roster: Min: 18 players (must be contracted) Max: 23 players (contracted or scholarship)

Secondary Roster:

Min 4 Scholarship (less if have more than 18 contracted players)

Max 10 Players, which may be made up of:

Additional scholarship players
Max 2 amateur players
Max 4 youth development players (1 must be GK)

No cap hit for the secondary roster

That is a lot more chances for young Kiwis, even before a possible Auckland team becoming a reality.
