Didnt make it to the game, but I would have loved to meet Zwaanswijk. My favourite player in the A-League.

a) Phoenix is a better side than City and they play in a better league. Its obvious and I dont think anyone from the knitting circle would dispute it.

b) Auckland City FC is a quality side, but is underestimated because of the league in which they play in. They will represent NZ (including the Nix) at the Club World Cup so its good that they are competitive against better teams.

The one thing City has that is unique from the A-League is the Spanish flair. Its like having 11 Rojas on the pitch. Few in the A-League have it, but not an entire team. Unlike Phoenix often did last season, City uses the ground and rarely plays the high ball.

Dont complain about our imports, as the league is amateur. Auckland City FC does a better job in the Nix in raising young NZ talent, and they have their own U19 team where players like Andrew Milne and Stephen Carmichael (hat trick in Mexico) are proving themselves and earning their spot on the first team pitch, before they head to the A-League or overseas.

All in all, City is a good team and Phoenix is a better team.

They might have played man to man at the back but up front when Ivan and co had the ball, they used a sliding zone... He basically talks bollocks because they looked like they were trying and put out a near full strength team

Fully agree, did not look like a team on a training run and sounds very much like a load of rubbish to make up for his teams poor performance.

Zwaanswijk (spelling?) was immense at the back for Mariners, won everything in the air. McGlinchey looked all class and next best player for them I thought was Bozanic.

Mariners goal I think Spoonley must have been unsighted as it came through a crwod of players, he certainly reacted late.

Agree on the Coombes comment someone made, he looked quite slow, maybe an off day?

On the kiwi players discussion Mulligan classed as a kiwi too don't forget.

Congrats to ACFC. Good for them in the buildup to the World Champs. I'm sure most (if not all) on here will be supporting them over there, despite the ribbing.

I was being sarcastic. ACFC supporters always knock the Phoenix for giving spots to anyone but Kiwis, playing anyone but Kiwis on the pitch and being an Australian team..

Fair cop on Danko and Feneridis. I didn't think Corales would have been classified as a local though. Anyway when you consider they tell everyone that they are all about grassroots football and developing kiwi talent, they have a lot of funny named Kiwis in their team.

That doesn't take away from the fact that they held their own well and won 3-1!

Yeah agreed. The amount of time Zwaanswijk just unleashed with cross field balls to the right winger sitting free was just phenominal. He has a pin point cross. That Bozanic lad was pretty handy as well.

I would interested in seeing what ACFC do with their midfield. The new Spaniard Andreu is similar and plays a similar role to Mulligan in the distributing holding midfield role. I would think they might bench the other one Albert? He didn't look to do too much last night (or much wrong) Either way, they have an embarrassment of ball playing midfielders. I would be very surprised if any team gets close to them on the ladder.

I too expect that Auckland City will win the 2011-12 ASB Premiership, but I think that the quality across the league is increasing. Auckland City are not the only team to bolster their lineups for the next season, as only Hawkes Bay and Otago have not announced any new signings.

Lets hope that they do the country and league proud in Japan and get 5th place, but I secretly hope they play Santos in the semi-finals.

I actually agree with most of that!

The only thing I would say is that the Nix' ability to foster young Kiwi talent is currently somewhat hampered by things beyond their control. The new owners have aspirations to change that but I fear they may be disappointed when they wade into the mire of FIFA, Aussie and Kiwi football politics.

Also, ACFC fund most of what they do, including development, through massive community trust funding - so it should be expected that they will do a good job.

Good luck to ACFC going ahead though, especially at the CWC.

Is it too late to say i really enjoyed the game?

Individually was impressed with Oliver Bozanic and Mcglinchey,  and the competitiveness of Pedj Bojic, for Mariners.

For Auckland i was impressed with the manner in which they defended when the possession count was way against them in the second half. Even big Angel Berlanga (I had written "dodgy' next to him in my programme after the first 20 minutes.)

I had a good chuckle at the verbals Adam Dickinson was giving the chap that was marking him - and the lip he got in return. Would have made good dialogue on a football drama.

And graham arnold was in fine form, asking us fans for a view on the offside calls - and then slagging the officials on the basis of our feedback. a character. A character.

I correctly predicted Chadwick would be the first to be booked.

Well done to Auckland. The whole match was well packaged for $10, including halftime entertainment, reasonable refreshment prices, a free programme and not a security guard in sight.

I would go back for another of these matches.

It was not all good news for Auckland City Football Club however. For the first time since 1 August 2005 (which is as far back as records on The Trillion Trust website go) they actually had a grant declined by the trust, two in fact.

Trillion Trust grants to ACFC since 1 August 2005 (by financial year 1 August to 31 July):

2005/06 - $372,116
2006/07 - $333,542
2007/08 - $451,445
2008/09 - $505,641
2009/10 - $481,640
2010/11 - $444,854

Total grants by the Trillion Trust to Auckland City Football Club 1 August 2005 - 31 July 2011 = $2,589,238

Auckland looked very good - that said I didn't see the Nix game. Mariners starting line up would probably be there number 1 bar Wilkinson so puts the result into perspective.

Bumped into one of the Spanish contingent in town yesterday. Seemed like a decent bloke but said he was only here to play in the Club World Cup. After that he is out of here hopefully to a pro club. Possibly in the A-League. He also mentioned that he knew of Dirty Sanchez and had probably played against him back in Spain.Toffeeman2011-10-04 13:48:24

Not really. I was wearing my Nix jacket and we got talking about the Nix. He said Sanchez was older than him and he mentioned their ages. I was also asked what boots he recommends (he was working in a sport shop) so it looked like he was actually working. He ALSO mentioned that he does indeed get a decent amount of money from ACFC for playing.

New Zealand Football: Rivals in charitable mood for football opener

October 12, 2011

AUCKLAND Auckland City and Waitakere United will square off for the ASB Charity Cup on Sunday in a new annual match between New Zealands best two teams to open the domestic season.

The ASB Charity Cup is a new fixture on the seasons calendar, pitting the ASB Premiership champions with the best performed kiwi side in the Oceania Champions League, and will be played the weekend prior to the opening of the ASB Premiership each year.

This year, the match will support White Ribbon a campaign that offers men the opportunity to be part of the solution to end domestic violence and both teams are committed to the cause.

Waitakere United will give 10 percent of gate takings to White Ribbon and the visitors have pledged to match Waitakeres donation.

Obviously the more we can do to highlight the cause the better, said Auckland City coach Ramon Tribulietx.

At Auckland City we hope a lot of people turn up to Waitakeres ground to watch the game because itll be an entertaining match and White Ribbon is a great cause.

The extra game will also benefit the two clubs preparations for a season where both face domestic and continental campaigns, with Auckland also adding Decembers FIFA Club World Cup to their schedule.

And of course, it offers the ASB premiership two title favourites the chance to claim the seasons first silverware.

ï¿½Were certainly taking it seriously, said Tribulietx of Sundays meeting.

Playing Waitakere is probably the biggest test we can have in New Zealand so well make sure were up for it but well still use it to get the last bits of pre-season preparation in place.

This year the two rivals have been drawn into different O-League pools, and while that means they wont clash during the O-League season, they could square off in the final for the first time. The winner of the ASB Charity Cup will earn themselves a leg-up in that competition with $2000 awarded to the winner to go towards O-League preparation costs.

Its a great concept and a big game to have early on in the piece, said Waitakere United coach Neil Emblen.

There are no points at stake but plenty of pride and its a derby match of course. We havent won too many but we hope that changes on Sunday.

Its a good game to have early doors and itll give both clubs a chance to see how they match up with the players theyve brought in over the winter.

Emblen expected a more free-flowing match than traditional Super City derbies but couldnt resist trying to claim the underdog tag.

I think Auckland go in as heavy favourites. Theyve had a sensational pre-season including the win over Central Coast, and ours has been a bit average to be honest.

Matches between our two clubs are always tense and sometimes not the best spectacle because there is usually so much at stake. I think therell be a bit more freedom from the teams in this the match and thatll add to what should be a great day.
