Manawatu will be looking for a new reserve keeper. Andrew Bailey has secured a scholarship to a US University so will be off soon.

Actually I could talk about this at length. Most supporters I meet can't handle anything longer than about five words and pretty basic. Start to get into anything with more than two lines and a modicum of wit and you see their eyes glaze over. Maybe it's just a Manawatu thing but from my travels to grounds aroud the country I don't think so (the Fever Zone excluded of course). They just can't be arsed putting in the effort. It's not that hard, just needs a bit a bit of practise, for god's sake it's not a bl**dy opera (voice raising)!!!!!!!!!!!

An enjoyable night for all involved! I'll be at the Rose & Crown before the Canterbury match (barring unforeseen circumstances).

Sad to read that Gonzo Nieres has returned to Uruguay and may not be back. His mum is unwell. We wish he and his family well at this difficult time and hope that he has the chance to return.
A big loss for us. Although not in last seasons form his mobility and close control caused problems for opposing defences.

Yep, bring your BBQ Sauce it will be hot. Prematch at the Rose & Crown from 11.30. Might catch up with you at some stage - I'll be wearing a YH shirt from last season.

That should narrow it down I'll probably wear my Phoenix shirt with Johnson 12 on the back. Not many of them around.

4-0 .. how did that happen?

Canterbury had a player sent off with about 10 minutes of the 1st half to go for handball. The resulting penalty made it 3-0 to Manawatu at the break.
Pretty scrappy second half and to be fair, Canterbury probably looked the more likely to score in the last 15 minutes. Final scoreline is probably a bit flattering.
Was surprised to see Milne and Chettleburgh start on the bench. They were impressive in our previous home games.

I would have though about 500 crowd.  Drizzly day in Palmy, but was still light enough and warm enough to watch in t-shirt shorts and jandals in the open.

Was a great save by the Red carded Cantab, but I still think it was going over anyway.

NZP Youngheat Manawatu 2 Otago 0. Saralegui scored the first in the first half, Hayne scored the second in the second half. Thought the game was a bit scrappy not as free flowing as the previous Manawatu games. Sale had a good game in defense

My thoughts on the last couple of games.
Great supporter turnout for the Team Welly game. There must have been 30+ YoungHeart fans there (many were "doing the double" with the Phoenix vs Adelaide match). Thought we played reasonably well and took our chances in the first half. Wellington had threatened though and when the Luis Coralles show took over we were pretty much stuffed.

We dominated the Otago match from start to finish. Otago just didn't have anything go their way. Great to see Maemae and Sale back. Alick adds more depth to our attacking options. I've never really rated Sale all that highly but he had a great game on Saturday. Great to see Gus get his first goal of the season. He has been doing a lot of the work up front now that Nieres has left. Could have had a couple more. Hopefully that will give him confidence.

Important to get a positive result this weekend against a Bay side whose tails will be up after recent results. Looking forward to another "away". Hope to see a few YH supporters up there. Shame about the bus.

Well well, a 2nd half performance full of character and desire against the Bay. The 1st half not quite so great but when Gus scored just before halftime I thought we were well up for it. I had the feeling a one goal lead wouldn't be enough for HB and so it proved. Another great YHM comeback at Park Island for the history books.
Stand out 2nd half performances from Nelson, Raf and Gus (you can see the confidence in him now) but the whole side stepped up a notch. Let's hope we can keep it going.

By the way, what's happened to Park Sung-Bae? He wasn't even on the bench at the weekend.

Sounds like we were hardly in it vs Auckland. Still no Park and now no Hayne either. Has he left for good or will he be back after his trial in Brunei?
A tough task tomorrow vs Waikato but I still believe we can do it. There is enough quality in this side to at least make the playoffs. Come on lads don't prove me wrong!

Of course the big match tomorrow is the early game Red Sox Manawatu Legends vs Dannevirke Vikings which has now been transfered from the sacred turf of Memorial to Skoglund Park. Watch out for all those wannabe Ronaldos showing their best moves!!! (Before we all seize up).

A valuable 3 points gained against Waikato who showed why they are challenging for a play off spot. Must say though that had it not been for the Waikato keeper, Manawatu would have had a more comfortable victory. He was outstanding.
Once again though, after taking the lead at home, Manawatu seem to go to sleep for the last 30 minutes of the second half and let the other team back into it. Even when Waikato were down to 10 men, they looked the more likely to score while Manawatu panicked in defence and resorted to a long ball game instead of the neat short passing game that they are capable of.
Nice to see Gus on the score sheet again. He gives 100% in every game.

He's back but has signed a professional contact in Brunei or somewhere and may not be eligible to play any more games for Manawatu. Depends when it goes through but is possible that he will be ineligible to play against Auckland this weekend.

Phew!!! The end to the Waikto match was worse for my heart rate than the Hawkes Bay game. Having created umpteen scoring opprtunities and playing vs 10 men we completely lost our composure in the last 20 minutes. That said we scrambled and battled and got the vital win. You need a bit of luck to go your way sometimes. Thought the penalty award was a soft one (I'm not biased!) Waikato played quite well under the circumstances without threatening much until that last 20.

We won't get as much freedom against Auckland. It'll be interesting to see if Hayne plays. Expect them to kick lumps out of Gus and Adam as usual.

He came to us from Uruguay Gus, Gus
He's one of our South American boys Gus, Gus
He'll stroll through your defence with ease
He makes scoring look a breeze
Gus Saralegui, YoungHeart number 9

When they played 2 weeks ago in Auckland, the game was relatively clean, no lump kicking at all.

Hopefully both sides can do it again as both teams can play some lovely football when they want to.

Jason Hayne will be playing against Auckland this Saturday which is good as Cory Chettleburgh is suspended. I'd be happy with a draw.

Don't know if my heart rate can take much more of this!! 3rd match I've been to recently where the points could have gone either way right till the very end. Auckland had us under the kosh for most of the 2nd half. That said Hayne and Maemae had good chances late on to snatch all the points for us. Sets it up for a massive final weekend. I expect to get another cardiovascular workout!

Hayne playing again? Chettleburgh back. Raf still out.

Yeah that second half was hard to watch. Thank goodness for Chris Marsh. We played like we were defending a 1-0 lead. I wouldn't have felt so bad if Auckland had nicked as they probably almost deserved it. We looked the better team in the first half.
It all rests on Sundays game against Waitakere. They have nothing to play for but I doubt they will try anything less than 100% against us.
I won't be able to make it as I have a corporate pass to Manfield for the weekend. Hopefully we'll have a home semi so last week wasn't my last game

Well Gooner, you missed a cracker! 2 superbly created and scored goals and a raft of other good chances and near misses. 2-0 up only to get pegged back all too quickly by Waitak. Entertaining football by both teams and few fouls. Thought we had a penalty late in the game when Hayne was brought down but the ref gave a freekick on the edge of the box instead. Otherwise I thought he refereed pretty well.
Manawatu's best performance of the season in my opinion. Marsh played well in goal again, the defence looked more solid with Cowan at leftback, the midfield chased and created all game without letup and Gus played exceptionally well up front.
AND we're in the PLAY-OFFS!!!!!!!!!! Although it was a pretty close run thing in the end. If we had lost we were out.
Onwards and upwards, bring on Auck City we are just warming up!

Work has conspired against me every weekend to not be able to see Youngheart so far this season and it sounds like I'm missing out big time! Next time I get a chance I'll be straight over there quick as a flash.

Well I finally got to a Youngheart game and how glad am I. One of the best performances I have ever seen. Spent most of the 2nd half with 9 men (Gustavo got sent off in the first half then Raf did early on in the 2nd half). Gustavo scored a brilliant goal from half-way spotting Spoonley off his line. Hayne scored a screamer from the edge of the area to make it 3-1 after earlier on scoring a diving header after Gustavo hit the bar. We were a little nervous in the opening minutes but bossed them most of 1st half and until we got Raf sent off in the 2nd half. Atmosphere was great at Memorial Park. Jason Hayne for the Phoenix! Was also impressed with Vicelich, that guy is class.

Also my first Youngheart game after recentlymoving to the Palmers-tron. Agree with most of what you say there Willy... very impressive in the first half, and were it not for two moments of silliness reducing Youngheart to nine men then I think they could have had a few more, they were that impressive in the first half. Unfortunately if you're already on a yellow card you should (a) not take off your shirt when you score a goal or argue at length with the referee... But that said some nice passages of play, two outstanding individual efforts from Gustavo and Hayne, and a very committed defensive effort when down to nine men. Sure a few lucky breaks as well, but you couldn't deny Youngheart them really. Bring on next week.

Game of the season by far and what a great crowd. I decided to sit in the sun for the first time and am paying for it today with a touch of sunburn. On the plus side, I was right in line when Hayne scored the 3rd goal. What a strike.
If Vicilich is reportedly getting paid $50k a year, I wonder what that ref is getting paid. The best decision he made all day was blowing the fulltime whistle. I'd love to know what Raf said to him to get his second yellow yet 3 Auckland players all had something to say after they had a goal disallowed for offside and I imagine it wasn't polite what they were saying. No card shown.
Even with 9 men, Auckland didn't create too many clear cut chances.
Next week will be interesting without De Gregorio and Gus. I imagine Nathan Cooksley will come in and Adam Cowan will move back up front. Not sure what the problem with Matt Kennedy is but would be good if he could slot into Raf's postion.

Gotta say that the bunch of what looked like ex Green Frenzy people sitting behind me provided lots of entertainment after they decided to pick on Auckland #8 Chad Coombes. Was brilliant.
"Did you break a nail Chad"
Aimed at the referee "Who ate all the pies....." Followed up by ".....apart from Chad"
Aimed at Chad after he went down in a heap early on " Someone get him a latte"
"Hey Chad, at least your parents didn't call you Honey"
