By all accounts he played very well. Great result for Reading who are looking at a tough season in League 1 (this was their first win since February). Clean sheet today and positive comments from the coach: Selles on Bindon: "To be able to play the way that we want, we need CBs who can cover big spaces. From the very beginning he showed that he can cover it, as did Nelson [Abbey]. Together they did a good job."

He was on NZ's preliminary list for the OFC U-19 Championship, unsure why he didn't make the final squad.

I recall someone who was familiar with the situation said NZF hadn't reached out to him at all re. the U20 World Cup, but that can't be true; if it is, there's a possibility he wasn't deemed good enough, which would be all too typical

What’s this guys connection to NZ vs the USA? I’m happy for the All Whites to bring in kiwis from around the world but it’s a bit embarrassing when we try to claim a player because their mums flight had a layover in Auckland for two hours in the mid nineties.

Also can someone explain the fax joke? I’ve seen them around but never knew where they came from.

See LooseUnit has you covered on Tyler's eligibility, so this should cover off your second bit about the fax machine.

Awesome for the kid - hopefully his no show was linked to him saying, hey at this stage trials are more important to me... besides I still qualify for the next one.

As a CB, he would be playing at a higher level than most of our current senior squad!

He also went with the USA U19s on a tour of Argentina they did last year. Handy tour for them in retrospect given 12 months later, Argentina were given the U20 WC hosting rights off Indonesia.

So be really interesting if the Americans planned to select him for their U20 WC team, but he said no I'm focusing on my club opportunities in the UK. Bit similar to Dibley-Dias, who was definitely approached by NZF about the U20 WC - but he was focusing on Fulham.

With both we can only hope they are good, but not good enough for senior men's USA, England, Portugal or Brazil. I'm sure NZF will also be offering the carrot for both of the OlyWhites and Paris Olympics next year. Bazeley could even invite both into AWs camp, for October friendly(ies).

With Bindon's Mum & Dad both playing for NZ, and him living their reportedly until age 13 - you'd hope (like Jay Herdman) there is some emotional tie to NZ. Need to monitor for any silver fern tattoos! But yeah you can also see way he'd be in no hurry to make a decision, with a 'home' WC in 2026. Given very long shot that he would currently be for the USMNT team in 3 years.

Not far off a full strength Millwall side. So a 4-0 thumping by Reading at The Den is something.

6 of the Millwall starters were in their starting 11 who won 1-0 against Middlesbrough away at The Riverside on the weekend.
4 of the other starters against Reading, were subbed on against Boro. Only the keeper wasn't involved in both games.
https://us.soccerway.com/matches/2023/08/08/england/league-cup/millwall-fc/reading-fc/4091777/

Reading themselves rested Aussie GK Dean Bouzanis (ex Melb City)
who looks like being their starting keeper this season in League One.

Two big 'ifs'.

If he makes the breakthrough at Reading, and if he plumps for NZ, that would be a big piece of the defensive problems solved. The AWs central defense is a real problem area.

Veeeeery early days in their respective careers but Bindon, Leuluai and Surman could be the answer to NZ’s central defence woes. I still have high hopes for Pijnaker too, but I don’t see him ever playing at the highest level.

His dad is a Kiwi, and his mum played for NZ a gazillion times.  He's more legit to be an All White than many others we've capped in the past.  If the lad wants to be part of it, then he should be welcomed into the next squad pronto.

1-0 win for Reading, for their first points of the season.

October window AWs play Socceroos in London, and hopefully one other friendly in Europe. So all nice & handy for Bindon if he's keen.

Problem is that L1 & L2 will play through the October window. So putting the whole USA v NZ tug of war aside, he may just want to focus on his club career for now. Paris Olympics will be a huge carrot though.

Early days, but there isn't exactly an abundance of 18 year old, NZ eligible CB's that are playing at a level like this. He would be an excellent addition to the national pool for this country. I do have to wonder if NZF has been in contact at all over the last little while...

Love the fact that he's come straight into the first team squad in England and is making an impact. Good to see also the Reading fans getting behind him too, even if they are touting that USA angle at this stage. I guess for the moment we just take it week in week out, but it does look like he'll continue to see good game time this season.

Best believe the yanks are all over his progress too. 😅

From Flying Kiwis. Turns out he was playing a bit in NZ, not that long ago.

Don’t be fooled by the “American Under-19 international” stuff, Tyler Bindon’s kiwi sporting blood runs deep. Most notably his mother is Jenny Bindon who earned 77 caps for the Football Ferns as a goalkeeper, though father Grant also represented Aotearoa at volleyball. Jenny was born in Illinois but moved to NZ after meeting Grant at university and became a naturalised citizen playing for a bunch of Auckland clubs during her career. She’s also been a pretty successful coach in NZ, USA, and also a bit in England. Tyler Bindon played for East Coast Bays for a number of years growing up – and returned to play for them at a couple of U17s National tournaments whilst temporarily living back in NZ during the Covid period.

He had been doing his thing in the Los Angeles FC development teams but this Reading move was not a sudden thing. His family moved over there initially because Jenny had gotten a job coaching with London City Lionesses – where she’d have worked with current Ferns international Grace Neville. Not sure if she’s still in that role because LCL have had a bit of a tumultuous offseason and there’s been a lot of player and staff turnover. Tyler had been trialling with Reading since late last season however it’s this preseason phase under new manager Rubén Sellés which really seems to have sealed the deal. Bindon featured in four friendly games and trained with the first team throughout. Now the 18 year old has signed on the dotted line of a two-year contract with the London outfit.

Bindon’s been on the USA path for a couple of years now. He was first called up to their U19s in March 2022 and earlier this year played his first games for them on a tour to Argentina. That’s not ideal... but he’s still in the age range where he can go back and forth. Frankly, the Yanks still owe us for Tyler Boyd. We’ll see how it goes. That accent is more Kiwi than American, just sayin’...

USA has 5 CB's in the age range of 23-26 that'd be competing for spots in their first team (Carter-Vickers, Trusty, Richards, McKenzie, and Robinson) and then have Long and Zimmerman both 30 who have been part of the first team last few years too. So there'd be a long list of players he'd be behind in the pecking order.

And that's not including a handful of other 25> CB's established in the MLS who could potentially push for spots in the future. So I think Bindon just starting out his professional career would be unlikely to see any game time for the USA in the near future unless he has a meteoric rise.  Even if he waited a couple of years before deciding we'd still be the country where he's a more guaranteed starter.

Surely a question for Bazely at next u23 press conference.

I think we can cut Bazeley & NZF some slack here. I'd say it was most likely Bindon was going to bypass the U20 WC for both the USA & NZF. The U20 WC clashed with pre season at Reading, as it did with Dibley-Dias at Fulham.

Sure if DB considered Bindon to be inferior to the likes of Issac Hughes & Kelly-Heald that has proven to be indeed folly. But maybe Daz just got feedback that young Bindon was focusing on his exciting club opportunity in the UK. At the end of the day doubt it will make much difference, and Bindon will choose the national programme that he thinks either offers him the best career path and/or that he feels most passionate about.

He lived in NZ until age 13, and recently again for a time during Covid - so the majority of his 18 years. Plus Mum (football) & Dad (volleyball) both played international sport for NZ, so I think is a good chance he'll plumb for Aotearoa.

He has that other Tyler (Boyd) as a prime example, that choosing the US is the riskier route if you ever want to play in say a World Cup.

Not a bad start to life as an 18 year old CB. Straight in the first team - 4-0 win over Millwall, 1-0 win over Cheltenham, and a
2-0 win over Stevenage. A real proper CB too, dominant in the air (18/24 aerial duels won) and with excellent distribution out from the back (84% pass completion). He also had a delicious long ball this morning to help set up the home sides second goal as well.

There are certainly worse ways to start out in your professional career.

Also worth noting that his Reading side been docked a point and have a suspended three points penalty hanging over them if their ownership can't maintain player payments on time for the rest of the season. This is the third season in a row where Reading have incurred a points deduction.

Ouch! 🤕
Hope that doesn't come back to bite them.

If enough players get called up, the club's game will get postponed unlike the A League. No reason at all not to expect Waine and others below prem not to play in the next AW window.

And if not enough players get called up, then presumably a L1 or L2 game isn't postponed?  Crocombe is the only curent international I can see on the books at Albion for example. It's irrelevant with Waine as he's in The Championship which pauses for FIFA windows.

Alot can happen between now and the Oct window (Oct 14th), but can see Smith and current club bench keepers Searle & Tzanev all being available for the AWs regardless of whether their L2 clubs play through the window or not.

The L1 guys of Mata, Crocombe & Bindon would all be a bit more uncertain for various different reasons. Well Mata & Crocombe actually a bit similar, big moments in their club careers at new clubs. Just like Waine bypassed the China friendlies in March, having not long been at Plymouth.

Bindon who has the whole NZ v USA issue to consider, could also just put that aside for now and focus on Reading.

I see that the USA U23 team have already qualified for the 2024 Paris Olympics. CONCACAF did a bit of a weird thing at their mens U-20 Championship last year (2022). The 4 semi finalists - USA,  Dominican Republic, Guatemala & Honduras - qualified for this year's U20 WC. Then the 2 finalists (USA and the Dominican Republic) qualified for the Paris 2024 Olympics, 2 years in advance.

So Bindon could have 2 Olympics carrots dangled in front of him. Though whether at 18 he is good enough for an USA U23 team I have no idea. But you wouldn't rule it out at all, the way he is going at Reading. His only involvement with USA setup to date was 2 games in Argentina in March this year, for their national U19 team.
