They were playing Guyana, settle down.

So been really interesting on twitter last few days since Boyd appearance for USA. Declan and others were saying that Boyd is part of Ole but others have been pointing out that while he was with Declan in Hamilton at most he was maybe only with Ole for a few weeks before he signed with the Nix. The following twitter exchanges made for an interesting read (Note: Cordwainer Bull is Bruce Holloway)

Edge is a nutter no doubt, but why not just ask the player themselves. To quote Boyd himself from the last few days -

https://i.stuff.co.nz/sport/football/world-game/113621812/usa-matchwinner-tyler-boyd-shares-unbelievable-moment-with-proud-parents

"Fortunately I was brought up in an academy where we play with both feet. They forced us to. At the time it was a bit of a struggle but I'm thankful for that and now I don't mind which side [of the wing] I play on."

He ain't referring to Melville.

Again when Thomas & Boyd do come back to NZ, they always seem to visit Ole.

Maybe one of those situations where back in the day you often hated your coach/teacher/parent - but years later you realise without them you would have never got to where you are.

Jesus christ, Declan should stay off twitter. As a working professional i don't post any of the gobshiet i used to (other than this forum) because you tend to look like a child in the eyes of others. If it wasnt for football i think this guy would be wearing a tinfoil hat.

I'm not saying he wasn't there at all but maybe its just became an association thing with Edge and Ole. I think there was an academy type situation when he was in Hamilton and notice in the article it states things like

"Last year Tyler Boyd paid a visit to the Ole Football Academy, where his former mentor, Declan Edge, coaches."

"the Melville United product"

Then if you want to take his own words https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RPsUx_axwjs

He says at the start of this video "Look at the facilities now, they have grown and grown and got better facilities. Back when we were starting we had to drive from Tauranga to Hamilton. My dad would take us all, we would drive all the way to train and then drive all the way home."

So really it seems to me that from academy he is talking about his time in Hamilton with Declan and its kind of been mixed into this is Ole. He doesn't mention Ole at all in the video. When he comes back, he is visiting Declan more than visiting Ole.

I know Ole was around before Declan, but in reality now Ole IS Declan.

It's also interesting isn't it that both of Declan's best "products" Thomas and Boyd have gone through first team football.  I'm really not convinced by this approach of sending kids off to play in European lower leagues.  But interested to see where it leads!

think the simple question is would Thomas and Boyd have made it to where they are without Declans coaching. In my opinion absolutely not, why... because he was out there every day with them, they weren't with the clubs  u15 coach for 2 night and than some shark school teacher pretending to coach two afternoons a week because he has to. Or FTC rubbish. They were getting consistent coaching. Who else was doing that at the time??? Who is doing it now? Plenty of clubs have 1 session q week "academies" for what good they are doing...

I think Declan is a tool but at the same time believe in most of the things that he is doing.

To be fair, Bruce does mention that fact several times in his tweets. He praises Declan and what he did, and still does. I think the tweets were primarily to defend things which had been said about Melville.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

So, since he switched to the USA, he's played at least 3 more games than he would have had he stayed with the AWs. For a team with a much higher world ranking, and providing a much better shop window to attract interest from top international clubs. A no-brainer for him, really. Hope he ends up in the EPL or somewhere similar. Go, Tyler.

In all honesty, I'd rather see him play for another country than rot in the Bermuda Triangle of fixtures that is the New Zealand football calendar.

True the tumble weeds are blowing now but he could have played a large number of games for us already, would have been in Russia in 2017 and MAY have made a difference against Peru in place of a broken Wood and a last minute call up for Brocks.

To me, he's about as kiwi as the English international at Leicester, End of.

He has a Kiwi father and an American mother and lived in each country for about 10 years before going to Europe. He is about as equally Kiwi and American as you can get. Just because you're salty doesn't make him a traitor or anything. You should listen to him on that Extra Time show, he played for New Zealand because he wanted to make his Dad proud.

Sounds to me like classic tall poppy syndrome going on here.

He forged his own path.  Good for him!

His reasons to play for the USA are more than fair enough, don't think he has anyone to answer to.  However, I don't see why kiwis should care too much about him, he's chosen them and won't represent AW's ever again, that's that.  He's getting a lot of press for someone who chose a different country imo.  I think it will turn out to be a huge loss, but it says more about NZF than him.

Because he's a New Zealander achieving on the global football stage. Just because he's playing for a different country doesn't change that. No different to me than supporting Reid or Wood at overseas clubs - I don't support them because they play for NZ, I support them because they're NZers.

How about the lad at Leicester who plays for England, never became involved in youth AW setups (who knows whether NZF ever approached him).

I think we would be less hard on him if he tried for the USA first and had never played for the AWs.

Winnie and Rory obviously played for other nations first but then chose NZ unlike Tyler who feels like he’s turned his back on us after representing NZ at the highest level.

Kid has no reason to lie and there is no reason not to take this at face value. Do you really think you're that important that he's done this just to spite you?

Sounds like Beckham's Inter Miami is leading the charge to sign Tyler, as they have "discovery rights" (whatever that is) on him, but I also heard Besiktas has put in a decent bid for him as well. Not a bad position to be in!

Explainer for "discovery rights in MLS"

Interesting how much the MLS focuses on parity (and transparency) and its continued growth in interest in North America while at the same time here the FFA are reducing mechanisms that focus on parity with the league declining in interest in Australia.

But do they have Derbies? FFA loves Derbies.  More Sydney and Melbourne derbies are going to save us.

They're not 'tiny' Curacao really - lot of their players are European based. Guessing that it's a whole bunch of guys with Curacao-ancestry coming together into the national team, which has only re-emerged in the last few years.

Probably similar to the Irish teams of the 1980s, when they called up anyone with an Irish parent/grandparent into the national team, and which actually kickstarted the best era of Irish football, and they're still going pretty well now.

EDIT: Just had a quick look, at most 10 of the players in their Gold Cup squad were actually born in Curacao, the rest were all born in the Netherlands. Only 3 of the 23 actually play in Curacao, the rest are all professionals in Europe.

Curaçao had a few chances to score as well. Admittedly so did the States. Boyd number 21.

USNT face Jamaica in semis.

Whilst Mexico (beat Costa Rica on pens) & Haiti (3-2 winners over Canada), square off in other SF.
