Well, I'll support any NZer/NZ team on the world sports arena.  That's the patriotic thing to do.

Patriotism is overrated.

Three for me, and two for them.

It has received absolute zero coverage in the world sports arena.  It's bizarre how much the NZ Herald/TVNZ gets in behind it.

So here's what I don't get about this boat business (and to a certain degree motor sports).

It's about how much technology you can cram aboard a boat hull and what sort of sailors your budget will stretch to.

In most other sports it's people vs people with a bit of technology thrown in (e.g. if you wear adidas or puma boots).

Even equestrian is better - it's person+unpredictable animal vs person+unpredictable animal.

I'm sure I've missed something.

Oh yes - and it's a business for the ultra rich (not too many Ronaldo type yachtsmen are there?).

you can't see the connection between a government funded team and a state broadcaster?

Had a small car accident a couple weeks ago (a ding at worst) which didn't do a lot of damage to my car but apparently wrote off the other person's car. I was technically liable for it (nose to tail) but the lady at the time said she felt responsible. The insurance company confirmed that I was liable so my insurance covered it and I had to pay the excess which was all good. Then today I get a call from the lady I crashed into and she was wanting to reimburse me for my insurance excess because she didn't have to pay anything and she got a new car out of it. I was pretty stunned and told her it's very kind of her but I'm fine with the liability sitting with me and having to pay for it myself but she insisted so I said I would settle for 50/50 and she agreed. Just crazy to be in a situation like that these days, and it blew me away a little bit.

America's Cup:  Team NZ 2, Oracle -2 !!!

Who cares if it's a "richman's" sport, so is F1, V8 Supercars & equestrian (but we still get behind Mark Todd).  The difference between the 2 teams is that it's Team NEW ZEALAND the country vs Oracle Larry Ellison, the software company.

Team NZ is a branding idea. There is no nationality requirement at all. And given there are more kiwis than any other nationality in Orcale , we could support them too.

branding idea yes but also more accurate than any other so called national boat, most sailors in Team NZ are Kiwi - I think all but 2, and most of the funding comes from the NZ govt - ie us! on oracle there is only 2 americans which makes the NZ v US thing a bit silly. I recall rading somewhere that Dalton has said that when we win it the rules will change, firstly they go back to the big boats and also you have to sail for your own country - so that will mix it up a bit.

yes but no other boat brands itself as representing a country.  and about a 1/3rd of the funding is from the govt.

from what I recall reading that will change, previous cup campaings have had country brtanded teams in fact I recall the 2000 in NZ having multiple "country" teams - Young Australia, and Young America along with Nippon Challenge. In the 1995 series there were even more country based teams in cluding France and Spain. It seems that since the 2003 challenges the "country" teams got out cos of the cost (I assume) and left it to the big guns - although Luna Rossa was essentially an Italian team and the Spanish were still around too.

so in all reality the major deop off of country based teams occurred when the yanks changed the rules, cos looking at the list of contenders that withdrew (9 in total) most of them were country branded teams - established specifically to race in the America's cup.

Personally I don't really care if the gum'mnt gave it a large wadge of my taxes.  Presumably they have decided that there is a return on investment.
I just think it's a farce of a sport and just because it is NZ is no reason to support it (should I support Crafar farms or Michael Fay as well? Should I bollocks).

Allegedly Govt to give 40 million dollars to help defend it, should the NZ team win it. I wonder if that is 40 million that could have been spent on health care?

On further reflection, this could well be a bit of an insurance rip off. I can't see how her car could have been written off from the damage caused in this crash, it was litterally a ding at no more than 10kmh and the damage I saw was a dent and two cracks to the bumper. My car, just a small dent in the bonnet.

But it's no different than supporting the RWC or tax breaks for LOTR etc.  There is an expected return on the investment by lots of money coming in from overseas (visitors, film companies etc).

I'd trust the central govt to make a more informed decision than say, Auckland Council (e.g. an LA Galaxy exhibition match that will be a winner because Wgtn did a few years back).

Guess it depends on what is the expected return on investment, and who receives that investment. I read that the return on it is 2:1 which I understand to be on the lower side. As for who receives that benefit, then I'd expect that it would almost entirely go to the boat building industry, and central Auckland.

It would be good if they introduced a 5 foreign crew member rule and 3 crew must be under 20.

Also while the starting crew are out racing, the reserve crew have to sit on the wharf on white plastic chairs.

I am not familiar with Perlemuter, but I do very much like Rubinstein knocking out a Chopin or two.

If it's a Beethoven you are after then I'm partial to a bit of Barenboim.

Yes I need to hear more Rubinstein. I  love Horowitz's Raindrop - all rubato and histrionics.
