The WU Mar game at Newtown today was fairly entertaining. The young Nix kids are pretty slick which is nice to watch - Rogerson and McGarry are very talented, Rogerson contributed a lot to his side's performance. Miramar executed an effective game plan led by the old horse Peter Halstead. I also thought Ben Fredrickson was very good at right back having to put up with Rogerson for half the match. The officials provided their share of the entertainment for the croud too - there were atleast half a dozen hilariously horrendous calls from the three of them collectively. I hope it was just an off day for them.

UH 6 BNU 1

Score reflects game in the main.  Mark Foster really has got the young UH lads starting to play with a fair bit of confidence.  6 points in the last two games with 9 goals for and 1 against.  They may still go down but if they do, on today's showing they sure will be dragging BNU down with them with two to go down.

Stephen Thomas got 5 of the 6. Looks good although he needs to lose a kilo or two.

One truely bizzare incident. With about half an hour to go and the score 3-0, Thomas is put clear at half way with only the keeper to beat but one defender right on his tail jostling with him all the way.  As the two went into the box they both went down.  Referee had got caught out by the break and was 20 yards away.  He looked at his linesman who indicated penalty which was duly given by the referee.  I must admit that from half way and on the sideline it looked a tad harsh, but he is the ref.  But then he does nothing about a card.  So he has both benches jumping up and down throughly aggrieved.  BNU for the penalty award and UH for no red card.  It looked like a text book case of why that sort of red card was introduced 20 odd years ago.  If it was a foul (and he has deemed it so by giving the penalty) then a clear goal scoring opportunity had been denied.

It seemed like he said - "I dont know if it a penalty or not, so i will give it but wont send him off."  As I said, truely bizzare

Was the Kapiti-Karori game postponed? What's up with Weka? Thought it usually held up well with a bit of rain?

Ian Paterson absolutely on fire for IBU tonight. Had a hatrick in the first seven minutes of game and finished with 5 all up. First IBU player to ever do so. Final score 6-2 over Petone.

Spot on call from the AR from where I was stood - there was light contact, but nothing to say yellow/red IMO. Was an entertaining game for sure, if only UH found this form earlier...

I bow to your judgment on the penalty.  I was too far away to tell for any certainty.  Once a foul was determined though, it by definition stopped a clear goal scoring opportunity as apart from the goalkeeper there was no one else to beat.  The law is quite clear, the player must be sent off.  The referee has no discretion

what if possession was in dispute?

No dispute, Thomas had clear possession from not far out of the centre circle all the way into the box

then from the description that sounds like a red.

But if things are 'shoulder to shoulder', and the players are running towards a ball in front of them (maybe from an attacker's poor touch, for example), and the defender fouls - it's not necessarily a red card (or card at all, because it's not a clear goalscoring opportunity - just possession in the box) but could be a penalty...

You raise a very interesting point that is IMHO a forgotton art (I am an old phobie of 54), namely the shoulder to shoulder challenge.  Too many players and too many referees consider it a foul.  But provided the ball is within playing (reachng) distance and you attack your opponent's shoulder with your shoulder, it is perfectly okay.

I do not believe this was the case at UH today.  Thomas went 20-30 yards with the ball at his feet into the box and then he and the guy trying to tackle him went to ground at the same time.  Now he either fouled him or he didnt. If he has tackled him fairly thats okay, if he didnt, then he denied a shot on goal and Feetup said on here that he was in good position to see that the AR was spot on to advise to the referee penalty.

I still believe it should have also been red card

Interesting games this weekend for both ends of the table. Wharf v Mar and KCU take on UH where a KCU win should see them safe

Plus Petone vs BNU, table could make for an interesting read after this weekend.

how can the weenix or karori think they are ready for central league when they struggle to beat Miramar/Olympic when they drop 2 or 3 players considering Miramar an Olympic 1st teams are in the bottom half of central league.

I think Stop Out lost  to the Petone resies last year, but they are sitting sweet in top half  CL this year.

I saw the weenix play out a close game v Wests this year and likewise Karori/Petone CL.

Anyway, it's a pretty pointless statement - you win your league/win the right to promotion then you go and test yourself against the best - who knows, they might win it.

Almost definitely not. From what I can gather it's just because all the Phoenix Youth players play for them.

Doubt they'd be there if it wasn't for the link.

I'd like to see them go back to 'Wellington Diamond United'.

And Kapiti Coast United go back to Raumati Hearts (despite the merger)

And milk in glass bottles.

Pretty much this. It was used well before the Wellington United/Phoenix deal was done.

Was originally used to describe the Wellington Phoenix Premiers in the ASBP, and was coined by a Wellington United player (if you can call what he does for them "playing"). The name got carried over because it's essentially the exact same team playing Cap Prem as played in the ASBP, just without any of the professional players.

Certainly not disrespectful.

It's what we dubbed the Phoenix reserves, and it's carried over to the Phoenix reserves reserves.

I know you didn't mean it this way but it is a little bit hilarious to say "respect the old club name" when the club has wholesale sold out their first team to the Phoenix.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

re: Weenix -How is partnering with WPX to build a competitive first team selling out? Certainly no worse than what other clubs with rich benefactors or links to gaming trusts have been doing for years in buying the best players for the first team-at least WUAFC balances this desire to compete at the top level with a strong social team presence, good junior programme and a strong women's club (with links to Zwolle). I think its a sustainable partnership and I applaud it from afar; hope they make it to the Central League and that the old club and name live on! You know I'm biased-what club man isn't?

Upper Hutt drew 1-1 with Vic Uni which didn't help them. Had a pen saved too. Need results to go their way now.

Wharf 2-0 over the Bubbles.
